Tombstone (new) Rowland Powell died 1838, Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary Janes 1753-1813.  Military Record: Served in Capt. Joshua Hazen's Company, Col. Wood's Regt., which marched to the alarm at Brookfield, Oct. 1780.

I'm starting to look into the Armon family based on the naming conventions and the fact that the first son is named Armon.  Also the possibility that her first name was Hannah based on the fact that the only known daughter is named Hannah.

Another possibility is that Elkanah had two wives.  The second being a Russell as that is a surname and it is not a name that is in the family before this time.

Consider the matter of the sun being on the wrong side of the subject about half the time. Most tombstones face the west. Take pictures in the afternoon. Noon is standard time, in summer the sun will reach it's zenith at 1:00. Have a picnic and wait for the sun.

Take a tripod and a mirror. The first to steady the camera and the second to use to reflect sunlight onto the tombstone when the sun is not in the right place. The mirror should be about 2' x 4' to work well with all sizes of stones.

Gleason, Michael.  Switch to Gregorian Calendar was Unpopular with Colonists, The Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter, Vol. XVII, No. 3, May/June 1991.

The last thing Virginians needed in 1752, amid rumors of French & Indian raids along the Ohio River frontier, was a new calendar system that included a new New Year's Day. Still, that's what they got from the British Parliament. 

Great Britain that year adopted the Gregorian calendar, eliminating 11 days and switching New Year's Day from March to January.

Bizzell, Virginia & Oscar Bizzell. Revolutionary War Recors, Duplin & Sampson Counties, North Carolina: Contributions to Genealogy, Newton Grove, NC: Sampson County Historical Society, 1997.

Wiggs, John, private, militia cavalry & infantry, widow's pension #W4398. Soldier was born 25 Jan. 1758 in Dobbs Co. (now Wayne), NC & was living there when he enlisted and always lived there except for 10 to 12 years that he lived in Sampson Co.  Then he returned to Wayne Co. where he applied for a pension on 1 Oct. 1832. He was placed on the pension roll 22 July 1833 at age 76. His pension was $30.71 per annum and a total of $92.13 was received by him. 

Soldier married 1782 in the Sampson area to Cherry (--?--). They had five children of which the oldest was: 

1. Daniel b. ca. 1783 & removed to Alabama
2. Raiford b. ca. 1785
3. Grace b. ca. 1787 md. Lewis Gurley 

Research Notes - Elkanah Lathrop / Lothrop

Son of Ezra Lathrop

Elkanah b. 11/9/1754 Norwich CT md. ? d. in either VT or Canada. His father Ezra died on Elkanah's sixth birthday. Elkanah's sister Charity married David Galusha in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont in 1773.

Henry Lathrop's biographical sketch in the History of Lawrence Co., IL puts Elkanah in New London, CT in 1781:

"His [Henry Lathrop's] father Russell Lathrop, was born in Fairfax County, Vt., and the grandfather, Elkanah Lathrop, was a native of Connecticut in which State he lived when the British and Tories burned New London. This atrocious act stirred him deeply and with many others he aided in driving the enemy out of the neighborhood."

Mom shared this Pedigree Chart with Movement with me yesterday and I've been working to create one for my lines in Excel. 

I ended up splitting it into four charts that cover up to 8 generations which gets me back to the immigrant ancestor and they are huge! Or when resized, so small you can't read them.  Yes, I am technologically challenged!

So here is my attempt at a simpler representation of the Lathrop line.  The "first" residence in the line is the last place the person lived.

In 1822 William Goff, of Sheldon, brother of Hezekiah Goff, came to town, and for the sum of $1,000 bought the falls and much of the land surrounding.  He put into the saw-mill previously built by Blaisdell a run of stones for grinding.  Mr. Goff afterwards built the grist-mill now standing.  In making repairs on this mill, in 1884, the following inscription was found on the back side of the bolt: "The first grist-mill built in Richford was built by Colonel Seymour in 1797, burnt up in 1800.  The second built in 1803, by Jonathan Janes, and stood until William Goff built another in 1824.  William Goff built, in 1837, the mill now standing.  Men worked on this mill:  A. Newton, S. Brown, W. Davis, A. Squire, C. Smith, F. Lamb, J. Wells, Jon. J. Combs, R. Lathrop, J. Harvey, A. Carr, and J. Upham. 

[Russell moved his family to Indiana in June 1837.]

Married: Mary Ann Richardson, December 5, 1750 in Connecticut

Occupation: probably a farmer. 

Religion: Rowland and Mary were admitted to the First Congregational Church in Lebanon, Connecticut on April 5, 1752.

Military Service:  Served in Vermont militia during the American Revolution.  In October 1780 a payroll of Capt. Joshua Hazen's Company in Colo. Wood's Regiment that marched to Brookfield in the Larm (?) Oct. 1780 includes Rowland Powell and his sons Rowland Powell Jun. Luther and Calvin.  Rowland Sr. served 3 days, wages due 4 shillings 2 pence, Travel from home 40 miles, Traveling wages 13 shillings, 4 pence for a total of 17 shillings, 4 pence.  His sons served the same time and received the same payment.

Census:
1790 Vermont - Hartford age 60 Rowland & Mary and a female, not clear which one is living with them.

1800 Vermont - Hartford, age 70 Rowland & Mary are living alone between John Richardson and Luther Powell.

Census:
1790 Vermont, Hartford - age 37 living with Rowland, four sons and four daughters.  This would be the eight eldest children in the list below.  They would have ranged in age from 3 to 15.  

1800 Vermont, Montgomery - age 47 living with Rowland and nine children ranging in age from 5 to 24.
