Research Log - December 2022

Using Elephind.com newspaper search engine I found the following items in the Fairplay Flume (Colorado) newspaper:

1915 - July 23 - Commissioner's Proceedings (column) - [bills allowed] - John Barr, work road 18 road district no. 3, $21.00

1923 -  October 12 -  Black Mountain News (column) - John Barr has been helping Mr. Corliss with his hay the past week.  Most of the hay is still in the shock on account of the rains.

1923 - October 12 - Commissioner's Proceedings (column) - Oct. 2, 1923 The Board of County Commissioners of Park County, Colorado met in regular session at 8 o'clock AM October 2, 1923 for the transaction of any and all business that may properly come before them. . . . The following bills were allowed . . . John Barr, jurors fees Hopkins case, $2.65.

1924 - March 7 - Black Mountain News (column) - Mrs. John Barr and little son Jackie left last week for Wayne county, Ill., where they will visit friends and relatives for a few months.  

 This is Ruby (Gurley) (Barr) Musteen and her son John Barr, Jr.  Ruby was the daughter of J.R. & Lou Emma (Speer) Gurley. She and her husband John Barr were married in Colorado Springs, CO in 1921, Jackie was born in 1922.  John & Ruby attempted to obtain

In Memoriam - December 27th



1853 Alonzo Johnson in Richford, VT age 26 the son of Jeremiah & Sarah (Allen) Janes.  He was born in Richford in 1827 and is buried in South Richford Cemetery in Richford, VT.



1958 John F. Lathrop, 81, of Route 4 Sumner, died in the Olney hospital Saturday.  His widow, Lizzie Stiff Lathrop, one son, one daughter, three brothers and two sisters survive him.


John Lathrop, son of Albert and Otealia [sic] Lathrop, was born February 23, 1877 and passed away December 27, 1958.

He was married to Lizzie Stiff, daughter of Lewis and Mary Jane Stiff, on March 20th, 1901.  Born to them were three children, one son dying infancy.

Left to mourn are one son Herman and wife of Olney and one daughter Mary Breen and husband of Charleston, Ill., four devoted granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

He also leaves three brothers, Dempy, Dennis and Merritt; two sisters Veva Wagner and mata Petty, both of Sumner; also many nephews and neices and a host of other relatives and friends.

In Memoriam - December 2nd


1745 Mary (Bushnell) Leffingwell age 90 in Saybrook, CT.  She was born in 1655 in Hartford, CT the daughter of Richard & Mary (Marvin) Bushnell.  Mary married Sgt. Thomas Leffingwell and they had ten children:  Deborah, Thomas, Elizabeth, Anne, Mary, Zerviah, John, Abigail, Benajah and Hezekiah.


1888 John Fee age 44 in Lawrence Co., IL.  He was born in Clermont Co., OH in 1844 and came to Lawrence Co. IL in 1866.  John married 1) Jane Kelso and 2) Elvira Lathrop.  He and Elvira had five children: unnamed child, Mary, Arthur, Ada and Carl.  John is buried in Chauncey Cemetery in Chauncey, IL.


1897 Mary (Butler) Lathrop. She was the wife of James Lathrop and they had six children:  Ella, two unnamed children, Lizzie, Harry and Margaret.


1946 Amos Robertson in Eagle, CO age 75.  He was born in Fairfield, IL the son of Amos & Sarah (Warren) Robertson.  Amos married Lula Cravens and they had thirteen children:  Ralph, Grandrill, Della, Nellie, Lula, Ortha, Ordie, Haskel, Sarah, Ida, Helen, John and Hester. He is buried in Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle, CO.


1956 Miles Withrow age 73 he was the son of Franklin & Mary (Dove) Withrow.  He was born in Washington Co., AR.  Miles married Ada Edmonds in Sallisaw, OK and they had five children:  Troy, Robert, Perry, Grace and Arlene. 


1970 Grandrill aka Peanut Robertson the son of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson above.  He was born in Sims, IL in 1901.  Grandrill married 1) Elizabeth Martin and 2) Leafy Lawrence.  He and Leafy had two children: Billy and Betty.  They were divorced ca. 1932.  Grandrill died in Roan Creek, CO and is buried in Battlement Mesa Cemetery in Parachute, CO.


1971 Elmer Zeller the son of John & Clara (Erkman) Zeller age 72.  He was born in St. James, AR in 1899 and married Phoebe Wheeler.


1972 Larry Flanigan the son of Cecil & Opal (Shaw) Flanigan age 24.  He was born in 1948 and is buried in Salem / Mateer Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.


2000 Obituary abstract: Richardson, Sylvia (Withrow), 80, of Wayne City, died 2 Dec. 2000 at Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon; born 25 Sep 1930 in Wayne County; daughter of Sylvester Withrow and Addie Dickey; married Robert Richardson, he died 24 March 1999; survived by 2 sons:  preceded in death by parrents, 5 sisters, 2 brothers, burial Tuesday 5 December in Thomason Cemetery.

2014 Mary Alice Fitzgerald, 75, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 1:45 a.m. at the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
Mary spent her life as a homemaker.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Koontz Cemetery.  Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.  There will be no visitation.  Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home are conducting the arrangements.
Mary was born February 21, 1939 to Paul and Mary (Sharp) Linder in Keenes.
Survivors include her husband Charles; six daughters, Helen May (Charles) Brown of Olney, Brenda Fay (Eldred) Simpson of Fairfield, Tammy Kay (Tim) Brown of Lawrenceville, Sherri Renea (Jeffery) Bowers of Lawrenceville, Cindy Sue (Jimmy) Massey of Fairfield and Sharon Ann (Jerry) Matthews of Xenia; two sons, Charles Ray (Nora) Fitzgerald of Irvington and Edward Jay (April) Fitzgerald of Noble and several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two brothers, Dean Linder of Fairfield and Earl Linder of Ohio. 
Preceding her in death were her parents.

In Memoriam - November 11th

1706 Sarah (Lathrop) Royce in Wallingford, CT, 51.  She was born in New London, CT in 1655 the daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop.  Sarah married Nathaniel Royce and they had four children:  Sarah, Hester, Lois and Elizabeth.

1713 Vincent Runyon in New Jersey age 68.  He was born in the Poitou-Charentes region of France in 1645 and immigrated to Elizabethtown, NJ ca. 1667.  Vincent married Ann Boutcher and they had seven children: John, Vincent, Thomas, Mary, Peter, Jane and Sarah.


1964 Sarah (Robertson) Roe, 53 in Denver, CO.  The daughter of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson was born in Grand Valley, CO in 1912.  She married Irwin Roe.

In Memoriam - October 27th

1718 Mary (Steele) Judd in Farmington, CT age 86.   She was born ca. 1632 in England the daughter of John & Rachel (Talcott) Steele.  Mary married William Judd and they had nine children: Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, John, Rachel, Samuel, Daniel and Elizabeth.

1742 Elizabeth (Bushnell) Perkins age 28 in Norwich, CT.  The daughter of Caleb & Anne (Leffingwell) Bushnell she was born in Norwich in 1713.  Elizabeth married John Perkins.

1845 Ezra Lathrop in Indiana age 64.  Born in 1781 he was the son of Elkanah Lathrop. Ezra married Margaret and they had three children: Elkanah, William and Harriet. He is buried in Sandcreek Cemetery in Decatur Co., IN.

1610 William Doggett in Boxford, England age 53.  Born in Birford, England in 1557 he was the son of William Doggett.  He married Avis Lappage in 1591 and they had twelve children: Anne, Thomas, Susan, Avis, William, Alice, John, Bridget, Dorothy, Richard and two unnamed sons.  He is buried inside St. Mary’s Churchin Boxford, England.



1754 Septimius Avery 5 year old son of Rev. Ephraim & Deborah (Lathrop) Avery.  He is buried in South Cemetery, Brooklyn, CT.

1852 Samuel Speer age 48 in Taylor Co., KY the son of Thomas & Sarah (Baird) Speer was born in 1804.  They had at least one son, Michael.  Samuel is buried in Speer Cemetery in Taylor Co., KY.

1691 Hannah Hobart age 53 in Bristol, RI the daughter of Peter & Elizabeth (Ibrook) Hobart.  She was born in Massachusetts in 1638.

1823 Rhode (Brown) Goodnight in Lincoln Co., KY the wife of John Goodnight.  They had at least two children: Isaac and Sarah.


1856 Franklin Myers 4 month old son of George & Ann (Woodard) Myers in McLean Co., IL.  He is buried in Scogin Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IL.

1940 Bert Damon husband of DeEtta Withrow and father of Frederick Damon.

1892 Lizzie Fitzgerald age 24 the daughter of James & Rebecca (Ward) Fitzgerald.


1948 Alice (Martindale) Withrow born in 1897, she was 51 years old. In 1911 Alice married Elmer Withrow and they had thirteen children: Gussie, Gordon, Phema, Clemmie, Lillian, Lloyd, Boyd, Joy, Mary , George, Shirley, Winfod and Dorothy.  Alice is buried in Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO.

1880 James Runyon in Kentucky age 31.  He was born in Jefferson Co., KY in 1848 the son of James & Nancy (Young) Runyon.  He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

1882 Elvira (Powell) Hopkins died age 47 y, 11 m, 5 d in Enosburg, VT of pulmonary disease July 9, 1882.  Born in Richford, VT the daughter of Jay & Esther (?) Powell.

In Memoriam June 17th

1863 David Robertson age 35 in St. Louis, MO.  Born in Ohio in 1828 to David & Rebecca (Clark) Robertson he married Julia and they had at least two children: Rebecca and Luvella.  David was a policeman and was drafted into the Union army.  He is buried in Alton National Cemetery in Alton, IL.

1865 Clinton Hopkins son of John & Susannah (Saltzman) Hopkins in Belle City, IL he was 50.  Born in Christian Co., KY in 1815 he married Beulah Huddleston and they had at least three children: Maria, William and Thomas.   He is buried in Olive Branch Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1908 Absalom Hampton age 70 in Oldham Co., KY.  He was the son of J.R. & Mary Hampton and was born in Kentucky in 1837.  Absalom married Mary Speer in 1870.  They had no children.  He is buried in Mt. Tabor Methodist Church cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

1942 Haskel Robertson the son of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson in Colorado.  Born in 1912 he was 30 years old and is buried in Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle, CO.

1967 Charles Wagner III in Boulder, CO the son of Charles Wagner II he was 61.  Born in Russel Gulch, CO in 1906 he married Rosalie Gurley in 1941. They had two daughters: Charyl and Carolyn.

1824 Caroline Clark daughter of Samuel & Phebe (Sayre) Clark age 1 month and 2 days. 

1837 Benjamin Johnson age 75 in Richland, PA the son of Caspar & Catherine (Morse) Johnson.  He was born in Richland ca. 1762 and married Abigail Roberts there in 1788.  They had eight children: Samuel, Casper, David, Elizabeth, Joseph, Anthony, Mary and Benjamin.


1994 Nellie (Robertson) Hayward the daughter of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson was born in Sims, IL in 1904.  She married Varnel Hayward in Grand Valley, CO.  Nellie died in Grand Junction, CO and is buried in Battlement Mesa Cemetery in Parachute, CO.

2004 Rosalie (Gurley) Wagner age 87 in Boulder, CO.  She was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1916 the daughter of Elston & Golda (Lathrop) Gurley.  She grew up in St. Louis, MO attended college in the west.  She and her roommate worked dude ranches during the summers to raise money to cover tuition.  Rosalie married Charles Wagner in 1941 in Wayne City, IL.  They had two daughters: Charyl and Carolyn.

In Memoriam February 20th



1704 William Bradford age 79 in Kingston, MA.  He was born in Plymouth, MA in 1624 the son of Gov. William & Alice (Carpenter) Bradford.  He married 1) ca. 1652 Alice Richards 2) 1673 Mary Fitch and 3) after 1676 Mary Wood.  William had fifteen children:  Thomas, Alice, Hannah, Meletiah, Mary, Sarah, Israel, Ephraim, David Hezekiah, John, William, Mercy, Samuel and Joseph.  He became a major in the colonial militia, was wounded in the Great Narragansett fight in 1675, served as representative and eventually became deputy governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  He is buried at Burial Hill in Plymouth, MA.

1835 Henry Powell age 23 in Richford, VT.  The son of Bradford & Clarissa (Goff) Powell was born Sep. 5, 1811 in Richford, VT.

1881 Andrew Speer age 78 in Leesville, IN son of Andrew & Elizabeth (Shelton) Speer born 1802 in Kentucky.  He married Dicy Kirby in 1824 and they had twelve children.  Andrew is buried in Wever Speer Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IN.

1881 Margaret Fitzgerald age 1, daughter of William & Emily (Smith) Fitzgerald born Jan. 19, 1880 in Illinois.



1968 Ordie Robertson age 57 in Denver, CO born 1910 in Grand Valley, CO the son of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson.  He married Florence Miller in 1935.  Ordie is buried in Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle, CO.

Birthdays:

1583 John Perkins baptized in St. Mary's Church, Newent, England the son of Henry & Elizabeth (?) Perkins.  He married Judith Gater ca. 1610 in Hillmorton, England.  They had eight children and immigrated to Massachusetts  in 1630.  They moved to Ipswich, MA in 1633.  John died there in 1654.

1693 Lt. Caleb Loomis in Windsor, CT the son of Josiah & Mary (Rockwell) Loomis.  He died in East Haddam, CT in 1784.

1821 William Colclasure in Indiana the daughter of John & Rachel (Galbraith) Colclasure.  He married Harriet Spiker the daughter of Jacob & Eva (Winebrenner) Spiker.  They had nine children.  Harriet died in Clay Co. in 1876.  William died in Clay Co., IL in 1904.
