Page 18 - Crowell, Joshua, "Cape Cod Byways," 1935.  North Shore Ways of Barnstable - The village of Barnstable, with its abundance of stone walls winding along above a rock-ridged foundation, commands an outlook unique in character and unexcelled in beauty. Sandy Neck, seven miles of irregular glistening dunes forming a giant protecting arm, gives the bay within a distinction and charm which can only be measured by frequent visits with varying ide, cloud, sun and seasonable effects.

One space along the highway presents a beautiful picture, signifying that the few but choice approaches to Barnstable Bay will amply repay investigation.

Of these approaches, beginning at the Yarmouth end of the highway through Barnstable, Keveney Lane is rural and picturesque, Indian Trail compelling but almost too narrow for comfort and Commerce Road has advantages not to be denied. Besides the fact it is a fishing village at the signs at the sandy lanes disclose with gleaming touches of bay and dune in the distance it is primarily a long curving sweep around the edge of thicket, swamp growth, marshes and creek.

Biography:

John Crow was one of the first settlers [of Hartford] and one of the original proprietors of our soil. He was a large land-owner and lived near the site of the late Ozias Roberts homestead, - an old unused well remaining there to-day. He owned a tract of land extending from near the present Hockanum bridge north to the neighborhood of "Smith's Lane," and running eastward to the end of the three-mile lots. Crow Hill, in the river swamp, still retains his name. He married Elizabeth Goodwin, only daughter of William Goodwin. With his father-in-law he bought 776 acres of land on this side of the river in 1639, a

1695 - Sept. 7 - Hartford, CT - Inventory of Nathaniel Crow's estate mentions legatees:

1708/09 - Feb. 7 Hartford, Connecticut - Deborah Crow, a minor daughter of Nathaniel Crow, late of Hartford, Dec'd. chose Thomas Olcott to be her guardian. 

1709/10 - Feb. 6 - Hartford, CT - Andrew Warner, late of Hartford, now of Windham and Deborah his wife, administrators of the estate of Nathaniel Crow, late of Hartford deceased, now presented an account of their Adms: Paid out £48-08-11, and there has been spent, wasted or lost of the Moveables, £48-12-10. The whole of the moveable part of the estate was Invt. at £121-02-10. Of this there remains for Distribution £24-01-01. One third part, vizt, £8-00-04, being the proper right of Andrew Warner and Deborah his wife; and other £8-00-04 the right of Daniel Dickinson, who married Elizabeth, one of the daughters of the sd. Decd; and other £8-00-04, the residue, the right of Deborah Crow, one other daughter of the sd. Decd. The said Andrew & Deborah Warner have already distributed and paid out the same to them. This Court allow and approve, and now discharge the said Andrew & Deborah Warner, Adms., and grant a Quietus Est. And whereas, the County Court held at Hartford September 5th, 1695, did order and direct the way and manner of the distribution of the Estate of the said Nathaniel Crow deceased, and therein (amongst other things) did order that John Crow, the eldest and only sonn of the said deceased, should have and receive his whole portion thereof out of the houseing and lands at inventory price: The real part of said estate is £386-00-00, which with the £24-01-01 of moveables amounts to £410-01-01 in the whole. This Court do now order and decree 1-3 part of the houseing and lands to and for the use of the sd. Andrew Warner and Deborah his wife, relict of the said deceased, for the term of her life. To John Crow, the only son, the sum of £201-00-04; and to Daniel Dickinson and his children by his late wife Elizabeth aforenamed, the sum or vallue of £92-09-10; and to Deborah Crow £92-09-10; all at inventory price. And this Court appoint Capt. Roger Pitkin, Deacon Joseph Olmsted and Daniel Bidwell, senior, distributors. The estate now distributed to John Crow, to the Children of Daniel Dickinson in right of his wife Elizabeth, and to Deborah Crow, youngest daughter of said deceased, by Capt. Roger Pitkin, Deac. Joseph Olmstead & Daniel Bidwell.

Further excursion among the stones revealed monuments to five Lathrops and six Leffingwells.  Still musing, the Pilgrim trudged off beside the meadows to where the two Old Lathrop Houses face one another across the brink of Washington Street. [Norwich, CT]

The lower one stands on land Samuel Lathrop inherited from his mother, but his seventeenth century house was burned in 1745.  Dr. Daniel Lathrop, his grandson, was responsible for the present structure, yet it cannot be said that he built it, for there is no way of knowing how much was reclaimed from the former damaged abode.  It is quite possible that this very kitchen saw Mohegan Indians lying before the fire of an autumn night, for the Lathrops would never close their doors against the original owners of the soil, and Colonel Simeon, one of Samuel's sons, was a great sympathizer with the wrongs of the Mohegans.

1730 Mehitable Crow in Connecticut age 78.  She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Goodwin) Crow born ca. 1652 in Hartford, CT.

 

1736 John Bradford son of Major William & Alice (Richard) Bradford in Massachusetts age 83.  He was obrn in 1653 and married Mercy Warren.

 

1997 Marie (--?--) Runyon the wife of William Runyon age 78.  She was born in 1919.  Marie is buried in Floydsburg, KY.

1720 Mary Crow age 74 in Connecticut.  She was born in Connecticut in 1646 the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Goodwin) Crow.

1741 Abigail Rockwell age 65.  She was the daughter of Samuel & Mary (Norton) Rockwell born in Windsor, CT in 1676.

1896 Nancy (Boly) Patton Lathrop age 38 was born in Missouri in 1858 the daughter of Jacob & Elizabeth Boly.  She married 1) James Patton and 2) Ezra Lathrop.  Nancy and Ezra had seven children: Myrtle, Ross, Maud, Louise, George, Helen and Alice. 

1934 Elnora (Zeller) Beal the daughter of John & Clara (Erkman) Zeller was born in Omaha, IL in 1888.  She married George Beal in 1912 and they had three children: Farrel, Lena and Audrey.  She was 45.  Elnora is buried in Lovell Cemetery in Lovell, WY.

1960 Dr. Hasten Garrison age 50 the son of William & Catherine (Richardson) Garrison he was born in 1909.  Hasten married Bernice Stone and they had three children:  Clarence, Gary and Mark. He is buried in Opdyke Cemetery in Opdyke, IL.

1962 Warren Smith the son of James & Bessie (Nemnich) Smith age 62.

1695 Nathaniel Crow in Hartford, CT the son of John & Elizabeth (Goodwin) Crow.  He was the husband of Deborah Leffingwell.

1712 Rowland Powell the son of Rowland & Isabelle (Button) Powell in Lebanon, CT age 55.  He married Elizabeth Truman and they had six children: Stephen, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Truman and Rowland.

1937 Joel Scrivner age 64 in Jefferson Co., IL.  The son of Bluford & Mary (Tharp) Scrivner was born in Jefferson Co., IL in 1872.  He married Frances Gentle in 1896 and they had three children:  Homer, Ota and Lora.  Joel is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, IL.

Norwich, Connecticut is a hub of the Lathrop family.  Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop moved there in 1668.  They were the first of four generations to live there through the American Revolution.  Their children married into Norwich families: Adgate, Crow, Perkins, Hodges, Leffingwell, Bushnell, Mason and Fitch among others. This is also the place where the name changes from LOthrop to LAthrop.

1825 Uriah Payne.  He married Margaret Clark in OH in 1851 and died in Lawrence Co. OH in 1906.

1891 Solomon Colclasure in Clay Co. IL, the son of John & Laura (Edwards) Colclasure.

1900 Hobart Robertson son of David & Dora (McCawley) Robertson.  He died 1980 and is buried in Pin Oak Cemetery, Wayne Co. IL.

Forrest & Gordon Lathrop

1932 Gordon Lathrop born Wayne Co. IL son of Forrest & Mildred (Shelton) Lathrop.  Gordon died in 1954 when the tractor and wagon he was pulling were hit from behind by a car just south of Wayne City.  He was 22.  Gordon is buried in Farnsworth / Mt. Zion Cemetery.

1824 Alfred Morehead & Elizabeth Durall in Muhlenburg Co. KY.  Elizabeth b. 1798 NC/KY? daughter of David & Susanna Durall.  Alfred b. ca. 1766 KY son of Armistead & Anne (Morgan) Morehead. They had 7 children. Alfred obtained a land patent from Pres. James Polk in 1848 and moved to Massac Co. IL.  He died ca. 1849 there.  Elizabeth died there after 1850.

1849 Rev. Erastus Lathrop & Elizabeth Spencer in Lawrence Co. IL.  Erastus was b. 1825 in Franklin Co. VT son of Russell & Cynthia (Powell) Lathrop.  He and Elizabeth had 8 children.  Elizabeth died in 1878 in Richland Co., IL and Erastus died in 1879 in Richland Co., IL.

1868 James Robertson & Mary Maulding in Middleton, Wayne Co. IL.  Mary was born 1847 in Hamilton Co. IL to Andrew & Hester (Hopkins) Maulding.  Her father performed the marriage.  James the son of  David & Rebecca (Clark) Robertson was born in Lawrence Co. OH in 1839.  The couple lived in Sec. 33 of Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co. IL.  They had seven children.  Mary died in 1910 & James died in 1929 in Wayne Co.  They are buried in Salem / Mateer Cemetery.

1888 William Randall & Frances Colclasure in Clay Co. IL.  William was born 1859 and died 1941 in Clay Co. IL.  Frances was the daughter of Warren & Sarah (Spiker) Colclasure born 1864 in Clay Co. IL.

1896 Stewart Fitzgerald & Mary Barnett in Richland Co. IL.  Mary the daughter of Fillman & Amanda (Pierce) Barnett was born in Richland Co. in 1859 and died in Clay City in 1946.  She was married 3 times.  Stewart born Gibson Co. IN in 1842 the son of James & Elizabeth (Taylor) Fitzgerald and died 1931 in Clay City, IL.  He and Mary divorced ca. 1905.  They had three sons.

1907 Clarence Colclasure & Marybelle Fitzgerald.  Clarence was born in Louisville, IL in 1886 and died in 1952 in Fairfield, IL.  He was the son of John & Laura (Edwards) Colclasure.  Marybelle was born 1889 in Louisville and died 1934 in Fairfield, IL.  They had 10 children which included 2 sets of twins.
