Page 241 - The Flora Journal-Record 1920s - The Flora Building Boom, more than 100 new houses two years. Record since securing international shoe factory. Milestones in the life of a town or city occur similar to those in the individual lives of the people. The Flora of a quarter century age is so unlike the city of today as to cause comment from those who knew the "old town" in its earlier period.

We have taken the time and effort to collect some statistics on material growth of Flora and find that most of the excellent modern buildings are creatures since 1903. 

From 1903 to 1922 we have listed the following new business or other buildings:

p. 22 The business quarter of Winchester lies in the basin of the little stream known as Town Run. It is therefore depressed, but the gradual improvement of the streets and lots has made it almost level throughout. In every direction is slightly rising ground; For Hill in the north, Church Hill in the east, Potato Hill in the south and Academy Hil and Powell's Ridge in the west. But these elevations are gentle in ascent, and are broadtopped belts of tableland rather than tre hills. Even the tower of the Handley schol does not rise high enough to permit a quite satisfactory examination of the field of view. . . . 

Running twenty miles southward, a little more than twenty miles northward, and a similar distance east and west, lies the Lower Shenandoah Valley, as distinguished from the Middle Valley between Strasburg and Harrisonburg.  To speak accurately, it is not a true valley, but a long and relatively narrow plain, separated by the narrow rampart of the Blue Ridge from the plain of Piedmont Virginia. The watercourses around Winchester are not tributaries of the Shenandoah, bu turn directly to the Potomac.

Wayne County Record, Jan. 22, 1880, Thursday, Pin Oak Column - Four died in the southern part of the township from diseases during fall and winter. Following are the names of those persons: Wm. Simms, Rebecca Robertson, Mirtle Simms & Levi Burkitt. Mr. Simms and Mr. Burkitt were old men above sixty years of age, while the other two were small children. - Rebecca Jane Robertson, daughter of Dr. Amos Sloane & Sarah (Warren) Robertson. She was born Jan. 18, 1874 and died Oct. 24, 1879. 

February 24, 1881, Ensley Column, John Robertson and wife have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement caused by the loss of their only baby. It was about 3 months old when Jesus called it home.

Brill Coat of Arms - is officially documented in Riestap Armorial General. The original description of the arms (shield) is as follows (translated):

Black: three silver crescents with a face, points turned to the left; each crescent is placed on a silver ring.  Above the shield and helmet is the crest which is described as a black column adorned on each side with a silver crescent and surmounted by five silver feathers.

The Martin Brill Family - Martin Brill was born in Germany in 1710. About 1733, he married Anna Maria (-?-), in Germany. She was born ca. 1712. Martin arrived in America on October 22, 1754 at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His age is listed as being 44 years old.  With Martin on the ship Halifax was Herman and Heinrich and Christopher.

According to the records of the Lutheran Church of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Martin and his wife and children attended Springfield Lutheran Church from 1755-1758.

In Memoriam - October, nd

1538 Alice (?) Perkins buried at St. John the Baptist Church in Rugby, England.  She was the wife of Thomas Perkins and the mother of Henry, Joan and Juliana Perkins.

1622 James Morehead of Lauchope son of James & Jean (Fleming) Morehead, age 92.  He was born ca. 1530 in Lauchope, Scotland.  He married Margaret Cunninghame and they had at least six children: James, Claud, unnamed son, Elizabeth, Margaret and David.  James was considered a rebel who supported Mary Queen of Scots.  He offered refuge to James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh who assassinated James Stewart who was serving as regent.  Several warrants were sworn for his arrest between 1572 and 1585 unless he and Hamilton disbanded their forces in the civil war. The rebels land was forfeited to the crown and the families generally ruined.

1752 John Blackburn in Menallen, PA age 77.  He was born in Loughall, Ireland ca. 1675 the son of John & Elizabeth Blackburn.  He married Rachel Morton and they had eight children:  William, Anthony, Abigail, Elinor, Samuel, Joseph, John and Rachel.  The family were Quakers or Friends and immigrated to Pennsylvania.  He is buried in the old Menallen Friends Burying Ground in Pennsylvania.

In Memoriam August 11th

1713 Elizabeth (?) Blackburn in Loughall, Ireland.  She was the wife of John Blackburn.

1898 Jno. F. Powell died aged 81 y, 10 m, 5 d, Aug. 11, 1898 of chronic nocteas.  He was a merchant born in Richford, VT the son of Jno. & Aurelia (Fassett) Powell.  He was a widower.

1905 Albert Crumbacher age 37 in Wayne Co., IL.  He was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1868 the son of James & Nancy (Gentle) Crumbacher.  He married Ollie Trotter in 1888 and they had three children:  Mabel, Guy and Fred. Albert is buried in Gunion, IL.

1914 John C. Speer, son of Andrew and Nancy Evans Speer, died at the parental home in Jackson township on Tuesday of last week, being a little past forty years of age. While he had been ill for some time, his illness was not known to be of a serious nature until very recently.  He was a young man who was held in high esteem by those of his acquaintances, and his death while in the prime of life, is a deep sorrow to his aged parents, brothers and sisters.  Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mr. Demgree of Earlham, were held on last Thursday, and burial in the Worthington cemetery.  Besides his parents he leaves four brothers and six sisters.

Menallen Township

This is the location of Menallen Township in the current county of Adams in Pennsylvania. Gettysburg is the county seat and is outlined just beneath the second A in Adams above. Before 1800 Menallen Township and all of Adams County was part of York County which currently borders Adams to the east.
