Page 311 - Unlike the vast majority of the merchant claims, this list was created between 1 November 1775 and 29th March 1776 when it was sworn to before John Watkins, a justice of the peace for Surry County. The maker of the list, John Stewart, was apparently the factor for the Cabin Point store operated by Mess'rs Dunmore Blackburn & Company, merchants of Glasgow. The list is found among the claims made in 1784, 1788 and 1789 by Robert Gilmour for compensation for losses incurred as a British subject. He states that he was a principal partner in Logan Gilmour & Co. of Norfolk and Logan and Dunmore & Co. and had incurred heavy losses. Heavily in debt in Britain, Gilmour had lost his private fortune and had brought ruin to his other partners. He does not explain why the list was compiled. Although used to support his claim for losses, the list was obviously not compiled for that purpose and indeed appears not to deal with either company with which he notes an involvement.  Perhaps a transfer of ownership occurred between the creation of the list and Gilmour's first claim some eight years later.

Goodknight Cemetery - This cemetery is located 3 miles north of Perryville, off US 68, near the Mercer County line on Claunch Road. 

 

Confederate Marker with inscription - Erected by the United States to mark the burial place of an unascertained number of Confederate soldiers said to have died while prisoners of war at Goodknight farmhouse, from wounds received at the Battle of Perryville, October 8, 1862, whose graves cannot be identified and whose names are unknown.

Bannerman, Mrs. Robert. John Morgan of Virginia & Tennessee - John Morgan (2) who was called Squire & Captain, arrived in what is now Sumner County, Tennessee on the Cumberland River, Nov. 2, 1785. To-gether with his two sons John (3) & Charles (3) built Fort Morgan. In the spring of 1787 he was killed by an Indian. (See Governor William Hall's Narrative [Drapers Papers] and Cisco's Historic Sumner County.)  That he was the son of Charles Morgan (1), of that part of Prince William County, which in 1759 was formed into Fauquier County, Virginia, is proved by establishing, from two different sets of records, the identity of two of Charles (1) Morgan's great-grandchildren.

In the will of Charles (1) Morgan, dated 5 Dec. 1758 probated 22 Sep. 1766, (Will Book I, p. 107, Fauquier Co., VA Wills) he named "My beloved wife Anna" and children: Charles (2), Simon (2) William (2), Benjamin (2), James (2), Alice

The 1790 census records for some Virgina counties were destroyed during the War of 1812.

My [Augusta Fothergill] effort has been to make use of the first personal property tax lists for those counties then extant in order to supply this deficiency.  The lists are not absolutely conclusive since some men did not pay taxes if they were indigent, exempt for physical disabilities or if they held certain political or military offices.  However, in some instances we find taht some of the latter paid on some of their personalty.

Ordinarily it would have seemed wiser to have published the tax payers as they occurred in the original lists but in all but ten of the counties they have already been letter grouped by the enumerators so that any value as to neighbors has been destroyed.

Fayette and Lincoln Counties of the present Kentucky have been included, then being in Virginia, but the lists for Jefferson County having been removed to Kentucky could not be included as I am only using those lists in our [Virginia] state archives.

The First Settlement Beyond the Alleghanies - The caption that furnishes the subject for the first chapter of this narration, as above, is not original with the writer, but has been used by other writers and historians as referring to "Draper Meadows" settlement, as well as to be used in reference to the whole settlement of southwest Virginia; but more especially the "Middle New River Settlements."  The purpose of the writer is to give the subject a restricted sense. Not in the spirit of controversy or antagonism, but merely to arrive at conclusion, based upon indubitable facts the writer is put to the necessity of showing that the "German New River Settlement," centering in and around the "Horse shoe bottoms" of New River and the mouths of [Tom's] and Stroubles Creeks and extending from this center has priority claims over "Drapers Meadows" by several years.

History of Massac County, Illinois

Gurley-Hinners - George L. Gurley was born on Route #2 Metropolis, near Unit 1 High School, Oct. 11, 1902. At age five he and his parents and brother John, two years younger, moved to a farm on Route #4. The farm had belonged to George's grandfather John Warren (Jack) Gurley and his grandmother Anna Tilker Copley Gurley. John's parents were John Byrd Gurley and Bertha Alice Arnesman Gurley. They lived on the farm for the rest of their lives. Gurley's have now been on this land for 108 years. George's grandparents on his mother's side were Henry Arensman Sr. and Hannah Tilker Copley Arnesman. The John Byrd Gurley's children are: George L., John B., Alice G., and Helen E. Gurley. 

Mattie Hinners Gurley was born on Metropolis Route #3, now Route 45. Where their home stood is now the Metropolis Truck Stop. Mattie's parents were Frederick (Fritz) and Caroline (Carrie) Moller Hinners. The Children of George and Mattie were: George Melvin born 1929, Lindell Dale born 1932. Both are deceased; Wayne L. Gurley who married Vicki Lynn.  Her parents were Beulah Newton and Basel Newton. Wayne works in sales for the Beckman Turf & Irrigation Supply at Chesterfield, MO.  Vicki teaches third grade. They live at Lake St. Louis, MO.

Research Notes - Coy/Edwards/Duncan

It's good to review your notes.  Here's a case in point.  When I was working on the Ohio Book No. 1 post I came across the marriage of Elizabeth Ann Coy & Jacob Duncan, January 18, 1844 in Muskingum Co.  Then I started doing more researching and came up with the following:

Rappahannock River

The Rappahannock River is the southern border of the northern neck where several families settled in the 1600s.  The Potomoc River defines the northern border of the neck. The neck at the Chesapeake Bay is about 20 miles across.  Over two or three generations these families migrated upriver before crossing the mountains into Kentucky.

Dunmore's War

I found a John Breden listed on Captain William Nalle's company out of Augusta Co. VA . . . need to look into this further.

And Samuel Litton and John Dunkin in the Garrison at Glade Hollow. . .
