Research Notes - Northfield Settlement & Raids

Northfield, Massachusetts

The town, as granted by the General court in 1672, was eight miles long by four and a half miles wide, extending 3/4 of a mile from the river west, and 3 3/4 miles east.  . . . The outlines were not regular. 

The river is the Connecticut river which runs north to south.

Second settlement - 1685 - added a tract of land to the south, on the east side of the river.  Another addition was made so that the town bounded Deerfield to the south.

River Indians:

In the 1670s thought to be have been about 1200 people and of that 300 warriors

Agawam - occupied region above & below Springfield. 

Nonotucks / Norwottucks - head of the falls of the Connecticut to Mount Wequomps / Sugarloaf

Married: 1) Mary (--?--) by 1635 in England - a William Janes md. Marie Hewes June 12, 1632 in London. This is a possibility as William may have been a member of Rev. John Davenport's church in London. 

2) Hannah (Bascom) Broughton, November 20, 1662, Northampton, MA

Occupation: teacher and teaching elder/minister in the church

Immigration: 1637 

Biography:  William Jeanes or Janes, came from England in 1637, settled in New Haven, June 4, 1639, and was admitted a freeman in 1648. He was by profession a school-master, and taught in New Haven for a number of years. In 1651, he proposed that the town should pay a portion of the salary of the teacher, instead of the whole being paid by the parents of the children. He went to Wethersfield soon

Tombstone (new) Rowland Powell died 1838, Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary Janes 1753-1813.  Military Record: Served in Capt. Joshua Hazen's Company, Col. Wood's Regt., which marched to the alarm at Brookfield, Oct. 1780.

Biographical notes: He was an early pioneer to this town [Lebanon, CT], and was highly esteemed as an intelligent father, friend and  counselor, leading a respectable family of influential children and grand-children in the paths of virtue and true religion. When he died, 18 December, 1718, he left behind him the legacy of a good name, that his children might profit by his example.  From him and his children has come down an influence for morality, for patriotism, and pure religion, which will continue to extend and bless other generations. Research Log - Residence Chart

Mom shared this Pedigree Chart with Movement with me yesterday and I've been working to create one for my lines in Excel. 

I ended up splitting it into four charts that cover up to 8 generations which gets me back to the immigrant ancestor and they are huge! Or when resized, so small you can't read them.  Yes, I am technologically challenged!

So here is my attempt at a simpler representation of the Lathrop line.  The "first" residence in the line is the last place the person lived.

Research Log - New London County, Connecticut

There are a couple places where many of our families meet and stay for more than a generation.  New London County Connecticut is one of these places.  More specifically the towns of New London, Norwich and Lebanon.  Dates are approximate times when person lived in the named town

New London - settled 1646, named 1658 is located at the mouth of the Thames River on Long Island Sound and has an excellent harbor. 

"The Indian name of New London," says Trumbull, "was Nameaug, alias Towawog." The first was undoubtedly the prevalent name: it was used, with many variations in the spelling, to designate both the site of the town and the natives found upon it. The Indian names are all descriptive, and this is supposed to mean a fishing place, being compounded of Namas, fish, and eag, aug, eak, terminations which signify land. 

The other name, Tawaw-wog, is not often found on record: it occurs however, as an alias, in several deeds, about the date of 1654. It is probable that this also has a reference to fish; and may be derived from Tataug or Tatau-og, black-fish, for which the neighboring waters are still renowned.

William Janes

Buried: probably in Brimfield Cemetery, many of his descendants are buried there.

Married: Abigail Loomis, June 5, 1712 in Brimfield, MA

William Janes was the prominent son and leading member of the family of Abel Janes.  He raised up a large and honored family of sons and daughters.  He was the favorite son of the family, and was at home with father and mother till some time after the death of his father, Abel (1718), and in time moved with all, or nearly all his family, from his native place, Lebanon, Conn., to land he purchased for himself and sons in Brimfield, Mass.  From records of the town of Brimfield, its settlement was commenced in 1717, and William Janes, grandson of the first William, the emigrant, was among the first, or nearly so, in purchasing and preparing for the future abode in his family.  He might have removed there with his young family as soon as a part of his five hundred acre purchase was cleared and partially improved, and convenient buildings erected for their occupancy.  The dates are not at hand to determine the point.  But his oldest son was not born till 1713, and his youngest son was born in 1734.  Their births are all recorded in Lebanon, and his mother, Mary, died in Lebanon 1736.  The distance being about forty miles from Lebanon to Brimfield, no doubt a part of the family remained till after the death of their grandmother, Mary, and perhaps all of them spent their winters there till Brimfield could be made to seem to them a real home.  His oldest, Jonathan, married Irene Bradford, granddaughter of Governor Bradford.

In 1822 William Goff, of Sheldon, brother of Hezekiah Goff, came to town, and for the sum of $1,000 bought the falls and much of the land surrounding.  He put into the saw-mill previously built by Blaisdell a run of stones for grinding.  Mr. Goff afterwards built the grist-mill now standing.  In making repairs on this mill, in 1884, the following inscription was found on the back side of the bolt: "The first grist-mill built in Richford was built by Colonel Seymour in 1797, burnt up in 1800.  The second built in 1803, by Jonathan Janes, and stood until William Goff built another in 1824.  William Goff built, in 1837, the mill now standing.  Men worked on this mill:  A. Newton, S. Brown, W. Davis, A. Squire, C. Smith, F. Lamb, J. Wells, Jon. J. Combs, R. Lathrop, J. Harvey, A. Carr, and J. Upham. 

[Russell moved his family to Indiana in June 1837.]

In memory of Mrs. Mary wife of Horace Janes who died at St. Albans on the 18th day of June D. 1822 aged 44 years.  She was Mary Brown.   


Sacred to the memory of Jonathan Janes son of Horace & Catharine who died Dec. 9 AD 1808 AE 9.

Died: Oct. 1813 in Richford, VT

Buried: Troy Street Cemetery, Richford, VT

Married: Rowland Powell ca. 1773

The family lived in Stratford, CT before moving to Vermont.

Census:
1790 Vermont, Hartford - age 37 living with Rowland, four sons and four daughters.  This would be the eight eldest children in the list below.  They would have ranged in age from 3 to 15.  

1800 Vermont, Montgomery - age 47 living with Rowland and nine children ranging in age from 5 to 24.

In Memoriam - December 27th

1853 Alonzo Johnson in Richford, VT age 26 the son of Jeremiah & Sarah (Allen) Janes.  He was born in Richford in 1827 and is buried in South Richford Cemetery in Richford, VT.

1958 John F. Lathrop, 81, of Route 4 Sumner, died in the Olney hospital Saturday.  His widow, Lizzie Stiff Lathrop, one son, one daughter, three brothers and two sisters survive him.

John Lathrop, son of Albert and Otealia [sic] Lathrop, was born February 23, 1877 and passed away December 27, 1958.

He was married to Lizzie Stiff, daughter of Lewis and Mary Jane Stiff, on March 20th, 1901.  Born to them were three children, one son dying infancy.

Left to mourn are one son Herman and wife of Olney and one daughter Mary Breen and husband of Charleston, Ill., four devoted granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

He also leaves three brothers, Dempy, Dennis and Merritt; two sisters Veva Wagner and mata Petty, both of Sumner; also many nephews and neices and a host of other relatives and friends.

1718 Abel Janes in Lebanon, CT age 74.  Abel was baptized in New Haven, CT in 1648 the son of William & Mary (--?--) Janes.  He married Mary Judd and they had ten children: Mary, Ruth, Elizabeth, Elisha, Sarah, William, Esther, Noah, Rachel and Bathsheba.

1893 John Erkman in White Co., IL age 50.  He was born in Holmes Co., OH in 1843 the son of Jacob & Katherine (Warner) Erkman.  John married Catherine Burkhardt and they had ten children: Susan, John, Joseph, Anna, William, Charlie, Roy, Harry and Katherine.

1945 John Erkman age 64 in East St. Louis, IL.  The son of Jacob & Fredericka (Probst) Erkman and nephew of John Erkman above, he was born in White Co., IL in 1881.  John married Emma (--?--) and they had five children: Edna, Edward, Martin, Mildred and John.  John was a barber.  The family lived in Rock Island, IL from about 1909 to about 1914.  John moved to East St. Louis by 1918.  He is buried in St. Clair Memorial Park in St. Clair, IL.

1982 Gertie (Lathrop) Shaw in Rochelle, IL age 84.  She was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1898 the daughter of Joel & Louisa (Dove) Lathrop.  Gertie married Herbert Shaw and they had six children: Lucille, Lawrence, Melvin, Loren, Dean and Delores.  She is buried in Trinity Memory Garden in Hillcrest, IL.

1675 Jacob Janes age 23 the son of William & Mary Janes.  He was born in 1652.

1882 Margaret (Runyon) Long age 73 in Oldham Co., KY.  She was born in Kentucky in 1809 the daughter of John & Sarah (Stout) Runyon.  Margaret married Robert Long and they had six children: James, John, William, Margaret, Louisa and Ann.  She is buried in Long Cemetery in Crestwood, KY.

1718 John Searls age 77 in Northampton, MA.  He was born in Springfield, MA in 1641 and married Ruth Janes in 1667.

1727 Stephen Tilden about 66 in Lebanon, CT.  The son of Stephen & Hannah (Little) Tilden was born ca. 1660.  He married Mary Powell ca. 1689 and they had at least one daughter, Mary.

In Memoriam September 20th

1690 William Janes age 80 in Northampton, MA, he was born in Essex, England in 1610 where he married Mary --- ca. 1630.  The couple immigrated to the US in 1637 and they had 12 children: Joseph, Elisha, Nathaniel, Abel, Abigail, Ruth, Jacob, William, Rebecca, Jeremiah, Ebenezer and Jonathan.  He married 2) Mary Bascom and they had four children: Samuel, Hepzibah, Hannah and Benjamin.

1697 Nathaniel Leffingwell in Norwich, CT age 40.  Born in Saybrook, CT in 1656 he was the son of Lt. Thomas & Mary (White) Leffingwell.  Nathaniel married Mary Smith and they had four children: Nathaniel, Jonathan, Daniel and Samuel.

In Memoriam - September 2nd

1675 Janes brothers  Ebenezer age 16 & Jonathan age 14 killed in Indian raid on Northfield, MA.  This was one of a series of attacks in the area beginning in Brookfield on August 2^nd and Deerfield on September 1^st. 

The next morning, Sept. 2, the band of savages that had been lying in wait near Miller’s river, appeared in force at Squakheag.  They had just received the large reinforcement of a war party of Nashaways, headed by Sagamore Sam and One-eyed John, the latter of whom was probably the leading spirit in this attack on our village, and the assault on Capt. Beers two days later.

1704 Mary (Bass) Capen, age 76 in Dorchester, MA.  She was born in England ca. 1628 and married John Capen in 1647.

1825 Jonathan Janes in St. Albans, VT age 69.  He was the son of Jonathan & Irene (Bradford) Janes born in 1756.  He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans, VT.
