Married: Nov. 28, 1644 Samuel Lothrop in Barnstable, MA by Mr. Freeman

Biography: She is reported by Savage as a sister to that John Scudder who was in Barnstable in 1640. Samuel Lothrop had made the acquaintance of Miss Scudder in Boston, where he commenced his business life as house builder, afterwards combining with this extensive farming operations. Their marriage was recorded by his father [Rev. John Lothrop] on the Barnstable Church Register as follows: "My sonn Samuel & Elizabeth Scudder marryed at my house by Mr. Freeman, Nov. 28, 1644." 

They settled in Barnstable, where his house stood next that of John Scudder. 

In 1648 he removed to New London, Connecticut, then called Pequot. . . . His house lot in the new plantation was the third in order from that of John Winthrop, Jr., Esq. . . .

Burke, Arthur. The Prominent Families of the United States of America, New York, NY: Heraldic Publishing Co., Inc. 1975.

Thomas Leffingwell, of Norwich, Conn., was the founder of this family in America, but the date of his arrival in New England is unknown.  In 1645 he appears to have rendered valuable assistance to Uncas, the Mohegan Sachem, when the latter was besieged by the Narragansett Indians. He was appointed a Lieutenant, 1672, and served in King Philip's War; Deputy, 1661-1710; m. Mary (--?--) and had issue:

1. Thomas b. 27 Aug. 1649; Ensign, Norwich (Conn.) Militia; admitted Freeman 1671; m. 1672, Mary, dau. of Richard Bushnell, and by her (who d. 2 Sept. 1745,) had issue; d. 5 March 1724. 

2. Jonathan b. at Saybrook, 6 Dec. 1650.

3. Joseph, b. at Saybrook, 24 Dec. 1652.

2 - Margerie Skynner of Braintree, Essex England wrote her will:

To my daughter Margerie five pounds (and other goods) and to her son John Gill a bullock.  To my son William Skynner five pounds.  

To my son John Skynner twenty pounds.  

To my daughter Rachell five pounds.  I do give and bequeath further to my daughter Rachell three pewter platters of the greater sort and three of the best cushions in the great chamber and my warming pan.  

To Sara Taylcoat a flock bed and a flock bolster, a coverlet and a pair of blankets (and other effects). To Rachell Taylcoate a little kettle of a gallon, a brass pot, a posnet (&c.).  

And I will that the pewter which I had of my son in law

Barnstable County incorporated in 1685, description of the county

Barnstable is the county town of Barnstable county, and is a port of entry.  It was incorporated September 3d, 1639. There is no particular account to be found of the first settlement of this town.  Probably there was none made much before its incorporation, as but two persons are named in the original grant.  "The Indian name of the place appears to have been Mattacheese, Mattacheest, or Mattacheeset,.   The church at Scituate being in a broken condition, the Rev. John Lothrop of that place removed with part of the church to Barnstable, in October, 1639, the same year the town was granted by the Old Colony.  It appears from the records which have been preserved, that all the south side of the town was amicably purchased of Wianno, and several other sachems, about 1650.  Three is reason to believe that all the north part was likewise purchased of the natives, although no record of it now remains.

The Rev. John Lothrop was the first minister in this town, as has been stated; his successor was the Rev. Thomas Walley, who was ordained in 1663 . . .

It has been stated "the West Barnstable church is the first independent Congregational church of that name in the world."  It was organized in 1616, in England, principally through the instrumentality of Rev. Henry Jacob, who was chosen and constituted its first pastor.

1566 John Scudder in Little Brook, England age 52.  Born ca. 1514 in England he was the son of John Scudder.  John married Joane and they had a son Thomas.

1850 Joel Clark in Lawrence Co., OH age 55.  He was born in 1795 the son of Samuel & Mary (Darby) Clark.  He married Margaret (--?--).  Joel is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Lawrence Co., OH

1899 Lottie (Colclasure) Lovelle age 27 in Clay Co., IL was born in Xenia, IL in 1872.  She was the daughter of Richard & Eliza (Sefton) Colclasure.  Lottie married Charles Lovelle and they had one son. 

1902 Rachel (Laws) Lathrop age 78 the daughter of William & Appie (?) Laws in Richland Co., IL.  She was born in Lawrence Co., IL in 1824.  Rachel married Henry Lathrop and they had ten children:  Samantha, Ann, Elvira, Albert, Charles, George, Mary, Henry, Gilbert and Martha.  She is buried in Amity Cemetery in Richland Co., IL.

1996 Norma (Blood) Dreiling age 75.  The wife of William Dreiling she was born in 1921.  They had one son, Richard.

1546 Henry Perkins in England, his estate was admitted to probate on June 16^th.  He had five children: Thomas, William, Joan, John and Edward.

1616 Elizabeth Scudder age 1 in Strood, England. She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Stoughton) Scudder and was buried on June 13.

1659 Sarah (Ensign) Rockwell wife of John Rockwell. They had three children: Sarah, Ruth and Lydia.

1866 John Fitzgerald of typhoid in Gibson Co., IN, age 75.  He was the son of James & Jane (Bruce) Fitzgerald born c. 1790 in Virginia.  He married 1) Margaret Eyers in 1812 and 2) Willie Ann Smith in 1846.  He had eleven children: America, Eliza, Mary, Rachel, Sarah, Jane, Amanda, William and three unidentified sons.

Norwich, Connecticut

Norwich, Connecticut is a hub of the Lathrop family.  Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop moved there in 1668.  They were the first of four generations to live there through the American Revolution.  Their children married into Norwich families: Adgate, Crow, Perkins, Hodges, Leffingwell, Bushnell, Mason and Fitch among others. This is also the place where the name changes from LOthrop to LAthrop.
