The McDowell family is legion and it is not strange that in the extreme emphasis placed on Colonel Joseph McDowell, of Quaker Meadows (1756-1801) and his nephew Captain Joseph, of Pleasant Gardens (1758-1795), that another Joseph McDowell living in Guilford county should have been overlooked. The United States census of 1790 for North Carolina records two Josephs as "Heads of Families" in Burke county and the Joseph McDowell of Guilford county, who is thus registered:

Salisbury District - 1 free white male over 16; 2 free white males under 16; 3 free white females.

The first land record so far discovered shows that this Joseph McDowell held:

A tract of land containing two hundred and fifty acres lying and being in our county of Guilford on the waters of the south side Reedy Fork of Haw River beginning at a Black Gum in William Scotts line . . . near a branch running thence west crossing two branches one hundred sixty poles to a post oak thence north crossing a branch to Abraham Whitesides corner black oak thence . . . in John Whites line . . . to his corner stake thence . . . in William Scotts line. . . Record of deeds, Guilford county, NC Vol. 2, page 118.

There is also the following purchase of land:

This indenture made this fourth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety four between Thos. Among the various nationalities that settled Montgomery County the German was an important one, and their descendants at this day within its limits are the most numerous. In less than a year after the landing of William Penn a colony of Germans, chiefly from Creisheim and Creyfelt, arrived in October, 1683, and shortly afterwards founded the village of Germantown. The Proprietary had been among them in their native land, and encouraged them to come. Here liberty of conscience had now been proclaimed, and an exemption from tithes, though neither was tolerated in Great Britain, or even to a very limited extent along the valley of the Rhine where also were the frontier lines of powerful France, and the frequent wars of Germany, the results of which combined were all powerful incentives to emigration to those more peaceably and liberally disposed. To facilitate this a company was organized at Frankfort-on-the-Main, and numerous pamphlets circulated throughout Germany in the language of its people, setting forth the peculiar advantages of the distant colony. Hence it need not be a wonder that the weaker of the persecuted sects were disposed to come first, for not matter however strong the attachments of nativity, the Fatherland presented from their experience in the past no bright or sanguine future. History of Massac County, Illinois

Gurley-Hinners - George L. Gurley was born on Route #2 Metropolis, near Unit 1 High School, Oct. 11, 1902. At age five he and his parents and brother John, two years younger, moved to a farm on Route #4. The farm had belonged to George's grandfather John Warren (Jack) Gurley and his grandmother Anna Tilker Copley Gurley. John's parents were John Byrd Gurley and Bertha Alice Arnesman Gurley. They lived on the farm for the rest of their lives. Gurley's have now been on this land for 108 years. George's grandparents on his mother's side were Henry Arensman Sr. and Hannah Tilker Copley Arnesman. The John Byrd Gurley's children are: George L., John B., Alice G., and Helen E. Gurley. 

Mattie Hinners Gurley was born on Metropolis Route #3, now Route 45. Where their home stood is now the Metropolis Truck Stop. Mattie's parents were Frederick (Fritz) and Caroline (Carrie) Moller Hinners. The Children of George and Mattie were: George Melvin born 1929, Lindell Dale born 1932. Both are deceased; Wayne L. Gurley who married Vicki Lynn.  Her parents were Beulah Newton and Basel Newton. Wayne works in sales for the Beckman Turf & Irrigation Supply at Chesterfield, MO.  Vicki teaches third grade. They live at Lake St. Louis, MO.

In Memoriam July 23rd

1651  - Robert Peck age 71 wrote his will in Hingham, England.  Born in 1580 in Beccles, England, Robert was the son of Robert & Helen (Babbs) Peck.  He attended Magdalen College, Cambridge between 1599 and 1603 becoming a minister.  He married Anne Lawrence in May 1603.  Robert served as the minister of St. Andrews Church in Hingham, England from 1605 to 1638 when he fled with his family to New England to avoid persecution.  Settling in Hingham, MA he served as minister from 1638 to 1641.  When Cromwell came to power in England Robert and Anne returned to Hingham, England to serve the congregation at Hingham again.  After Anne’s death he married Martha Bacon.  Robert and Anne (Lawrence) Peck had eight children: Robert, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Samuel, Daniel and Anne.

I Robert Pecke Minister of the word of God at Hingham in the Countye of Norff beinge in bodily health and perfect memory knowinge the uncerartainety of man’s life, doe dispose of that worldly estate God hath given me in manner and form following

Imprimus I give and bequeath unto Thomas my sonne and Samuel sonne and their heirs forever All that my messuage wherein I now dwell situate and lyenge in Hingham aforesaid with all the edifices yards and orchards thereunto belonging.  As alsoe the inclose and barnes adjoining.  As also one inclose now devided called the Lady Cose conteyninge about eight acres be it more or less.  As also one pightell at the end thereof of conteyninge twoe acres and __ upon condicons following, and for the paymant of such legacies as are herein expressed.

First I will and bequeath unto Robert Pecke sonne of my sonne Robert deceased the sume of 20£ at his age of 23 years.
