History:  The first member of the Tyler family to come to Virginia was Henry Tyler, of Shropshire, England, who with his wife and family, settled on a small estate in "Middle Plantation" near Williamsburg, which was granted him for transporting six persons to the colony. 

This family has given many illustrious sons to America, among them John Tyler, Sr., Speaker of the House of Delegates, member of the Convention of 1788, Judge of the General Court of Virginia, Governor of Virginia, Founder of the "Literary Fund" in Virginia and Judge of the United States District Court.

Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest the home of President John Tyler in Charles City, Virginia. John Tyler (1790-1862) served as vice-president to William Henry Harrison and became president upon Harrison's death in 1841.  He was the first vice president to succeed to presidency and to serve without being elected to the office.  Tyler purchased this plantation in 1842.  It remains in the family to this day and is open to the public.

1751 – Frances Tyler daughter of William & Elizabeth (Keeling) Tyler.  Frances was known by Franky.  She married William Redd and had eight children.  She died in Caroline Co. VA 1813.

1871 – John Erkman in Carmi, IL the son of John & Catherine (Burkhardt) Erkman. He died in Saline Co., IL in 1934 and is buried in Big Ridge Cemetery, Saline Co. IL.
