Married: Elkanah Lathrop by 1774

I'm starting to look into the Armon family based on the naming conventions and the fact that the first son is named Armon.  Also the possibility that her first name was Hannah based on the fact that the only known daughter is named Hannah.

Another possibility is that Elkanah had two wives.  The second being a Russell as that is a surname and it is not a name that is in the family before this time.

Research Notes - Elkanah Lathrop / Lothrop

Son of Ezra Lathrop

Elkanah b. 11/9/1754 Norwich CT md. ? d. in either VT or Canada. His father Ezra died on Elkanah's sixth birthday. Elkanah's sister Charity married David Galusha in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont in 1773.

Henry Lathrop's biographical sketch in the History of Lawrence Co., IL puts Elkanah in New London, CT in 1781:

"His [Henry Lathrop's] father Russell Lathrop, was born in Fairfax County, Vt., and the grandfather, Elkanah Lathrop, was a native of Connecticut in which State he lived when the British and Tories burned New London. This atrocious act stirred him deeply and with many others he aided in driving the enemy out of the neighborhood."

Clarence Lathrop has been the ferryman at Darwin for the past 10 years. Now approaching retirement age, he had first ferried here as an 18-year-old lad when his great-uncle Jim Lathrop was the ferryman. Following an Army career, Clarence was employed by John Deere, Marshall and Trailway Bus Co. before coming back to the ferry, for full-time employment in his later years.

Brief Vermont History & Stuff:
Vermont is divided into counties which are in turn divided into townships.  Each township is the property of a specific town.  This structure was created by early immigrants from Massachusetts where people lived in towns and parceled out the lands surrounding the towns for farming and grazing. Early generations did not live outside the town on farms.  Land was given to the 2nd and 3rd generations until all the township lands had been claimed.  At this point Massachusetts towns began sending the 3rd and 4th generations west and north into new towns / townships. What is now Vermont was claimed by both Massachusetts and New York until 1776. 

In Vermont it is possible that some people lived on farms outside of the towns soon after immigration or that individual farmsteads developed over time as Indian populations disappeared.  

Elkanah Lathrop/Lothrop

Eureka! Well, almost . . . 

Back in January I put in a 3 hour research request to New England Historic Genealogical Society to find out when and where Elkanah lived after 1800, who his wife was, other children especially girls and when and where he died.  

In early March I received a notice that the research had begun and that the research should be completed in early April.  The report and documents arrived today.

Russell & Cynthia Lathrop

Looking for information on their children:

A daughter born between 1816-1820 in VT, she is listed on the 1820 census and in a Richford, Franklin Co., VT court record. Russell Lathrop lived in Mill School District and had 2 scholars between the ages of 4 and 18. The other would be his son Henry. Did this girl live to adulthood? Did she marry in VT or Canada before the family migrated to IN? If she did marry, did she move to IN and then on to IL?

Marvin b. 1829 in VT was with the family in Ripley Co. IN in 1840 and witnessed deeds for his brother Levi in Richland Co., IL in 1852. What happened to him?

Elkanah Lathrop

b. November 9, 1754 in Norwich CT, son of Ezra and Charity (Perkins) Lathrop. He wandered off to northern Vermont and has hiding out ever since. I have found some records about him in Richford, Vermont. His son Russell and his daughter got married there to members of the Janes family. I believe Elkanah ended up living in Canada. I have no idea who he married or how many times he married. Anybody got any ideas?
