Again, everyone is present and accounted for.  There are are German immigrants, people born in Vermont, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois all of whom make their way to Wayne County, Illinois. Average age at death is 71 years & 2 months, pretty impressive for the time span.  It comes out to 71.2 years for dad's line and 76.1 years for mom's side. 

The generation spans 137 years from 1820 to 1957.

John Slavin b. 1723 Tyrone Co., Ireland, d. 1788 Highland Co., VA, md. Elizabeth Stuart b. 1726 Scotland, d. 1796 Highland Co., VA.  John was a weaver.  Lived for a time in Pocahontas Co., WV at Meadow Dale.

Generation 2
1. Isaac/Isaiah Slavens b. 1761 Augusta Co., VA, d. 1840 Putnam Co., IN, md. Martha Stuart.  Isaac was a soldier and moved to Kentucky then on to Indiana. - Isaiah Slavens in DAR b. 6/12/1752 Rockingham Co., VA, md. Martha /Patsy Stuart md. 2) Barbara Perkee. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, fought in the battles of Hot Water Springs, Jamestown. He was in the company of Captain KinCade of Colonel Moffet, Captain Thomas Hecklin, Company of Col. Simpson Mathias, Virginia Regiment, 1780.  Isaiah applied for a pension on April 26, 1833, died 1840.  Said to have had 17 children.

Immigration:
The family came to America between 1851 and 1860. A lock of hair of "an aunt who died on the boat over" was passed down from Fredericka to Anna (Erkman) Wheeler to my mom.  I suspect it was a Probst or one of Sophia's family members.

I have no record of Fredericka's middle name, but she is referred to as Rachael in the 1870 census and as Rosa in the 1900 census.  It's possible that the 1870 census taker didn't understand the name Fredericka and wrote it as Rachael.  It is also possible that Fredericka went by a nickname or that her middle name was Rosa. Two of her granddaughters were named Rose and could have been named for her.  Family names are used repeatedly in this family.

In Memoriam - October 29th

1604 Luke Ogle in Newcastle, England age 24.  He was the son of Luke Ogle born in Eglingham in 1580.  Luke married Isabella Craster and they had at least two sons: Nicholas and Henry.  He is buried at St. Nicholas Church in Newcastle.

1898 Lula Powell the 15 year old daughter of Dewitt & Mary (Henderson) Powell in Richland Co., IL.  She was born there in 1883 and is buried in Amity Cemetery.

1926 Henry Harre age 80 in White Co., IL, born in Germany in 1846.  He was the husband of Louisa Probst.  Henry is buried in Hammack Cemetery in White Co., IL.

In Memoriam August 1st

1868 Mary Peters age 15 in Champaign Co., IL the daughter of Francis & Sarah (Runyon) Peters.  She was born in 1852 in Shelby Co., KY.  Mary is buried in Bethel-Harris Cemetery near Seymour, IL.

1868 Emma Peters,  sister of Mary above.  Born June 9, 1868 in Champaign Co., IL, she was 22 days old. Emma is buried in Bethel-Harris Cemetery and shares a stone with Mary.

1871 Susan (Dawson) Young in Kentucky age 59.  She was born in 1812 and married Michael Young in 1835 as his second wife.  They had no children together, but she raised Michael’s children as her own. Susan is buried in the Simpsonville, KY cemetery.

1926 James Colclasure in East St. Louis, IL age 69.  He was born in Louisville, IL in 1860 the son of Robert & Frances (Tracy) Colclasure.  He married Amanda Sowder in 1880.  They are buried in Oak Mound Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.

In Memoriam July 25th

1479 Robert Tilden age 39 son of John & Johanna (?) Tilden wrote his will.  He was born ca. 1440 in Benenden, England and married Alice.  They had at least two children: Johane and John.  The will went to probate July 11, 1480.

To be buried in the church yard of Benenden.  To the high altar there 20d.  To every god-son 4d. To the mending of the bad way between Wodesend and Pepper Bondesgate 3s, 4d.  Certain brass pots to remain as part of my messuage.  The residue of all my goods and legacies, I give to Alice, my wife, and John Telden my brother, whom I make executors, to dispose of my goods at their discretion for the health of my soul.

My last will concerning my lands.  My feoffees of all my land in Benenden and Cranbrook in the county of Kent are Thoel Watman, Richard Evenden, Water Denman, John Stace son of Thomas Stace, and John Nenne son of Robert Nenne.  To wife Alice during her widowhood, my lands in the denne of Crotehole, with reversion, after her death or marriage, to son John at the age of 18 years.  To my son John, after my wife’s decease or marriage seven pieces of land called Hersetsgrove, Gretefield, Longfeld, Fyveaores, Griggismede and the two pipeslands.

Provisions made for any future child born.  To brother John Telden two pieces of land called Yaldfeld and Yalfeldewode, he to pay to my daughter Johna 12 marks at her marriage.  If my son John, or any other son I may have, die before 18 years, without heirs to their bodies lawfully begotten, my garden and lands on the den of Crotehole, after the death of my wife Alice, to my brothers John and Thomas, they paying to my daughters at marriage, or the age of 28 years £20 each.  And if they die before said time, then my brothers pay for a priest to celebrate in the church of Benenden for my soul for one year, 5 marks.

To my brother John arable land and wood called le knoll, Knolwode, Whithm  wode, Cul’towne and cul’towne wode, containing 20 acres in payment £22, 13s, 4d which I owe him; 16 marks which Thomas Hendle of Cranebrook owes me for land he bought of me, in payment of 50 marks which I owe to my said brother; and two pieces of land called Jociescrofte and Slystowne on the den of Telden in payment of 6 marks which I owe him.

1873 Michael Dietz of cholera about 39 in Carmi, IL.  Born in Wertenberg, Germany ca. 1834 he immigrated to Indiana in 1856 where he married Fredericka Probst in 1861.  They had six children: Andrew, Louisa, Magdalena, Lulu, William and William.  Michael served in Co. A of the 91^st IN Infantry during the Civil War.  He is buried in the old Carmi Cemetery.

1893 Elizabeth Zeller 7 months old the daughter of John & Clara (Erkman) Zeller.

In Memoriam March 15th

1713 Mary (Rock  Smith) Denton in Hampstead, New York age 73.  She was born in Dorchester, MA in 1640 the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Rock Smith.  The family used the name Rock Smith to distinguish themselves from several other Smith families in the area.  Mary married Samuel Denton in 1656 in Hempstead, NY and they had at least one son Abraham.

1829 John Tipton Hunt Jr. age 66 in Owingsville, KY he was born in Frederick Co., VA in 1763 the son of John & Mary (Overall) Hunt.  He was a veteran of the American Revolution.  John married Mary Denton in Washington Co., TN in 1788 and they had fifteen children: Lemuel, William, Absalom, James, Reuben, John, Howard, William, Joshua, Elizabeth, Denise, Sarah, Benjamin, Patsy and Debby.  At age 49 he commissioned a colonel in the War of 1812.  He is buried in Crain Cemetery in Fleming Co., KY.

Probst Sisters

Fredericka (Probst) Erkman, Anna Erkman &
Louisa (Probst) Harre

Fredericka and Louisa Probst are the only known children of Andrew & Sophia (?) Probst.  This is one of the biggest blocks we've come up against in the family history. Andrew and Sophia were born in Prussia and they were married there ca. 1844. Fredericka was born July 30, 1845 and Louisa March 7, 1851.  The family left Prussia and came to the United States between 1851 and 1859 when Andrew is found buying land in Marrs Twp., Posey County, Indiana.  There is a family story about an aunt dying on the boat coming to America.  A locket of the woman's hair was passed down to my mom.  I'm not sure if this was a Probst aunt or an Erkman aunt.

In the 1860 Posey County census Andrew's age is given as 31 and Sophia's as 40.  The girls are listed as Rosena and Lowesi.  Andrew died before 1868 as Sophia is buying land on her own.  Sophia died after 1892.  She is listed as the widow of Andrew Probst in the 1892 Evansville city directory.  Her home was at 121 E. Iowa Street.

From other records it is known that Andrew did not speak English.  The census taker was Elijah Spencer and it is not known how well he spoke German.  Fredericka's middle name may have been Rose or Rachel. She is listed as Rachel in the 1870 census and Rosa on the 1900 census.  Fredericka never learned to speak English.  She married Michael Dietz in 1861 at age 16 and he went to war serving in Company A of the 91st Indiana Infantry.  They had six children and eventually moved to White County, IL.  When Michael died of cholera in July 1873 Fredericka was four months pregnant with their son William who was born in January 1874.  She was a 28 year old widow with five children.

In August 1873 Jacob Erkman  and his wife Eva's son Jacob Jr. was born in White County.  A year later Eva died.   In 1876 Jacob Erkman and Fredericka (Propst) Dietz were married in Posey County, he was 40 and she was 30.  She may have moved back to Indiana or they may have opted to marry there because they both had family and friends there.  Jacob's parents had settled in Posey County before moving on to White Co.  It's possible that they had known each other in the 1860s.  Jacob's oldest child was 19 and his youngest 3 years old. Fredericka's oldest child was 15 and her youngest was 2 years old.  Together they had nine more children. Jacob died in 1908.  Fredericka died in 1913 aged 67.  Both are buried in Newman Cemetery in White County.

I know much less about Fredericka's sister Louisa.  She married as his second wife Henry Harre ca. 1910 when she was about 57.  He was a widower with grown children.  Louisa died in White Co. Nov. 23, 1923. Although Henry Harre lived three more years he was not the informant on her death certificate.  Fredericka's daughter Sophia was the informant and seems to have taken care of the arrangements.  Louisa is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville where Sophia may have been living at the time.

1886 Jennie Robertson the daughter of James & Mary (Maulding) Robertson in Wayne Co., IL.  She married Lee Johnson ca. 1907 and had one son.  Jennie died in 1969 and is buried in Salem / Mateer Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

August 9th

1760 Samuel Lathrop son of Lt. Ezra & Charity (Perkins) Lathrop

1846 Henry Harre in Germany, the husband of Louisa Probst.  He died in 1926 in White Co. IL and is buried in Hammack Cemetery, White Co. IL.

1889 Marybelle Fitzgerald in Louisville, IL the daughter of Wakeman & America (Wilson) Fitzgerald.  She died in 1934 in Fairfield, IL.

July 30th

1838 – Roxanna Coy in Muskingum Co. OH the daughter of Hiram & Elizabeth (Brooks) Coy.  She died 1840 in Muskingum Co., OH and is buried in McGinnis Cemetery in Muskingum Co., OH.

1850 – William Fraim son of John & Polly (Hale) Fraim died. 1918.

March 7th

Happy, happy birthday . . .

1797 Elizabeth Johnson daughter of Benjamin & Abigail (Roberts) Johnson in Richland, PA and died ca. 1876 in Pennsylvania.  She married Samuel Foulke and had 4 children.  

1823 William Smith in Frederick Co. VA son of James & Elizabeth (Tewalt) Smith.  William died 1905 in Clay Co. IL.  He married Clarinda Benefield in 1846.  They had 9 children.
