Military Record: Served in Capt. Joshua Hazen's Company, Col. Wood's Regt., which marched to the alarm at Brookfield, Oct. 1780.

At this stage in the evolution of a colonial government the plantation-colony of New Haven was invited to join a confederation of the Puritan colonies of New England. Such a confederation had first been proposed in August, 1637, soon after the arrival of the Davenport company in New England, when representatives of the towns on the Connecticut River visited the Bay Colony in connection with the Pequot War and the Hutchinsonian controversy. At this time five proposals made by some of the assistants of Massachusetts Bay proved acceptable to the magistrates and people of Connecticut, but a sixth, providing for the reference of intercolonial disputes to commissioners to be appointed by the colonies, the decision of a majority of the commissioners to be accepted as final, met with opposition. In May, 1638, John Haynes, William Pynchon, and John Steele of Connecticut laid before the general court of Massachusetts Bay at Newtown revised articles providing for the reference of intercolonial disputes to commissioners, the decision of the latter to be accepted as final only if unanimous. The Bay Colony seized upon this opportunity to advance its claim to Agawam or Springfield, most northerly of the river towns. The delegation from Connecticut assented to the claim, but Massachusetts demanded the assent of the general court of the colony. When

In 1822 William Goff, of Sheldon, brother of Hezekiah Goff, came to town, and for the sum of $1,000 bought the falls and much of the land surrounding. He put into the saw-mill previously built by Blaisdell a run of stones for grinding. Mr. Goff afterwards built the grist-mill now standing. In making repairs on this mill, in 1884, the following inscription was found on the back side of the bolt: "The first grist-mill built in Richford was built by Colonel Seymour in 1797, burnt up in 1800. The second built in 1803, by Jonathan Janes, and stood until William Goff built another in 1824. William Goff built, in 1837, the mill now standing. Men worked on this mill: A. Newton, S. Brown, W. Davis, A. Squire, C. Smith, F. Lamb, J. Wells, Jon. J. Combs, R. Lathrop, J. Harvey, A. Carr, and J. Upham.

Translated “In this grave are deposited the remains of that truely reverend man, Mr. James Fitch. He was born in Bocking, in the County of Essex, in England, the 24th day of December, in the year of our Lord 1622; who after he had been most excellently taught the learned languages came into New England at the age of sixteen, and then spent seven years under the instructions of those very famous men, Mr. Hooker and Mr. Stone. Afterwards he discharged the pastoral office fourteen years at Saybrook. Thence he removed with the major part of his Church to Norwich, where he spent the other years of his life in the work of the gospel.
