Research Log - Robertson Clan (Duncan)

The Robertsons are known in Gaelic as clan Donnachaidh after Duncan, who led the clan at Bannockburn in 1314. The clan continued to be known as Duncan until around 1450, when hey adopted the name of Robert, one of their chiefs who captured two of the murderers of King James I and handed them over to justice.

The clan's early history is obscure, several accounts being given - one that they are descended from the MacDonalds, another that they descend from the old Earls of Atholl, and yet another that they belong to the Kindred of Columba and would thus descend from very early Irish kings. 

Duncan who led the clan at Bannockburn seems to be the earliest chief on record, and it is from his son Robert that the Robertsons of Struan descend. Their chiefly title of Struan-Robertson is derived from their Struan lands which were ereced into a free barony in 1451. The question of style was a matter of chiefly choice, and the Robertson chief could just as easily have elected to be called the MacDuncan or the MacRobert of MacRobert. 

William Struan was killed by the Earl of Atholl in 1530, and the Earl seized nearly half of the clan lands. The 11th laird died in 1636 leaving an infant to succeed him, and the child's uncle Donald became the captain of the clan during his infancy. He was

Research Log - MacGregor Clan

Our Magruders are descendants of the MacGregor clan of Scotland.  The following is from Charles MacKinnon's book The Scottish Highlanders, New York, NY: Barnes & Noble, 1984.

Clan MacGregor, the 'Children of the Mist,' proclaim their Alpinian descent in their motto 'S Rioghal Mo Dhream' - Royal is my race.'  They have never failed to assert their seniority in the Alpinian 'family,' a menaingless seniority since the clans always acted independently and were bound only by a common origin. In fact . . . if anybody was senior it was the MacNab, who was a generation nearer the ancient thron than MacGregor, MacKinnon or MacQuarrie. . . .

Kahn, Edythe. Jacob & Sarah Wolf Lotz: Their Ancestry & Descendants 1760-1994, no imprint, 1994.

Gen. Jacob Lots/Louts/Lotts, the third child of Jonas Lotz was born 21 Dec. 1760 in Stoverstown (now Strausburg), Virginia, in that part of Frederick County that became Shenandoah County in 1772.  He died 12 Oct. 1839 in Wilkesville Township, in that part of Gallia County [Ohio] that became Vinton County in 1850. He served in the American Revolution.  Soon after Jacob was released from service, he was married to Sarah Wolf/Wolfe, otherwise known as Sarey.  Sarah's mother, Mari (sic) posted marriage bonds for Sarey Wolf to Jacob Loots (sic) on 22 Dec. 1782 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Sarah was born 17 Oct. 1761 in Frederick Co., VA. Some records say she was born in Staunton, VA. She died 6 Oct. 1837 in Wilkesville Twp.

Sarah's mother, Maria Gertrude (Brumback) Nisewanger Wolf otherwise known as the widow, Mary Wolf, was the daughter of Melchior & Mary Elizabeth (Fishback) Brumback of Prince William Co., VA. Melchior emigrated from

It was early in the 1730s when Scots began to leave the Highlands in favor of "The New World."  However, it was only after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden in 1745 - and the resulting British attempts to destroy the clan system - that the pace of emigration became significant.

Most of the earlier setters in North Carolina had come from Virginia and South Carolina because North Carolina's shallow and treacherous coastline was difficult for large ships to navigate. The Scots among these early settlers were primarily Lowlanders.

Highlanders had settled along the Cape Fear River as early as 1724. In 1729, however, the colony of North Carolina was royalized, making the disposal of unclaimed lands the responsibility of crown officials.  The decision was made to award land grants (of 320 or 640 acres) to individuals in the colony who could show themselves capable of cultivating the acreage, and in about 1732 the first real settlement was established.

1644 James Morehead of Lauchope in Lanarkshire, Scotland.  He was the son of James & Margaret (Cunninghame) Morehead.  James married Margaret Somervell.

1645 Elizabeth (Ilbrook) Hobart in Hingham, MA age 37.  She was born in England in 1608 the daughter of Richard & Margaret Ilbrook.  Elizabeth married Peter Hobart and they had eleven children: Joshua, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Josiah, Ichabod, Hannah, Hannah, Bathsheba, Israel, Jael and Gershom.  The family immigrated to New England ca. 1633.

1691 Samuel Leffingwell the son of Lt. Thomas & Mary (White) Leffingwell age 33.  He was born ca. 1658 in Saybrook, CT.

1795 Samuel Morehead in Fauquier Co., VA.  He was the son of John & Mary Morehead.  Samuel married Wilmauth --?-- and they had seven children; Sarah, Lydia, Mary, Elizabeth, Peggy, Charles and Samuel. 

1889 John Crutchfield in Clay Co., IL.  He married Martha Colclasure and they had ten children:  Mary, Nancy, John, Terry, Martha, Elizabeth, James, William, Marion and Savillah.

1917 Clarence Erkman the six day old son of William & Kate (Spencer) Erkman in White Co., IL.  He is buried in Carmi, IL.

1538 Alice (?) Perkins buried at St. John the Baptist Church in Rugby, England.  She was the wife of Thomas Perkins and the mother of Henry, Joan and Juliana Perkins.

1622 James Morehead of Lauchope son of James & Jean (Fleming) Morehead, age 92.  He was born ca. 1530 in Lauchope, Scotland.  He married Margaret Cunninghame and they had at least six children: James, Claud, unnamed son, Elizabeth, Margaret and David.  James was considered a rebel who supported Mary Queen of Scots.  He offered refuge to James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh who assassinated James Stewart who was serving as regent.  Several warrants were sworn for his arrest between 1572 and 1585 unless he and Hamilton disbanded their forces in the civil war. The rebels land was forfeited to the crown and the families generally ruined.

1752 John Blackburn in Menallen, PA age 77.  He was born in Loughall, Ireland ca. 1675 the son of John & Elizabeth Blackburn.  He married Rachel Morton and they had eight children:  William, Anthony, Abigail, Elinor, Samuel, Joseph, John and Rachel.  The family were Quakers or Friends and immigrated to Pennsylvania.  He is buried in the old Menallen Friends Burying Ground in Pennsylvania.

1513 John Morehead of Lauchope killed at Flodden Field. He was the son of Sir William & Mariota (Hamilton) Morehead and married Margaret Hepburn.  He had at least one son John.

1659 Abigail (Whitefield) Fitch in Saybrook, CT.  She was the first wife of Rev. James Fitch and they married in 1648 in Guilford, CT.  Abigail and James had six children: James, Abigail, Elizabeth, Hannah, Samuel and Dorothy.

1693 Rebecca (Peck) Hobart in Hingham, MA age 73.  She was born in England in 1620 and married Peter Hobart in Massachusetts.  They had seven children: Japhet, Nehemiah, David, Rebecca, Abigail, Lydia and Hezekiah.

1596 Margaret Cunninghame in Scotland.  She married James Morehead and they had six children: James, Claud, unnamed son, Elizabeth, Margaret and David.

1836 James Fitzgerald in Gibson Co., IN age 91 the son of James & Mary Fitzgerald was born 1745 in Orange Co., VA.  He married Jane Bruce in Orange Co., VA in 1787 and they had twelve children: Johnson, John, James, Reuben, Frances, Mary, Nancy, Sarah, Derritt and Stephen.

Clan Bell Tartan

Tartan used by the Bell/Beal/Beall/Beale family.  The family dates to the 1100s and lived along the Scottish/English border.  Alexander Beall is the immigrant ancestor.  He was baptized 1649 in St. Andrews, Scotland and died in Price George's County, Maryland in 1744.  He owned several large tracts of land:

1828 Wilson Laws son of William & Appie (?) Laws in North Carolina.  He married Samantha Lathrop in Lawrence Co., IL in 1842.  His sister Rachel married Samantha’s brother Henry in 1844 in Lawrence Co.  Wilson and Samantha had no children.  Samantha died in 1875 in Lawrence Co., IL.  Wilson died in 1879.  They are buried in Leach Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IL.

1858 Henry Morehead Gurley in Wayne Co., IL the son of Leonard & Susanna (Morehead) Gurley.  He died in 1913 in Wayne Co., IL.

1846 Joseph Milner in Jefferson Co., IL son of Thomas & Matilda (Holmes) Milner.  He served in the Illinois 48^th Infantry from Wayne Co., IL in the Civil War.  Joseph married Eliza Gurley ca. 1865.  They had four children.  The family was living in Sedgwick Co., KS in 1878 and moved to Pawnee, IL in 1880.  In 1900 they were living in Auburn, IL.  Eliza died in 1897.  Joseph died in Decatur, IL in 1921.  They are buried in Brush Creek Cemetery in Divernon, IL.

1886 Alma Corrie daughter of W.F. & Elva (McGuire) Corrie in Lawrence Co., IL.  She died in 1974 and is buried in Amity Cemetery in Richland Co., IL.
