Mond: ye 5th is a Rainey morning but soon cleard off, & was a warm Day; we set off soon & alittle after noon Reacht Jos'h Hydes in Middleborough [Middlebury, VT]; where we bated, & got some Milk for Din'r, having lit of no milk before since, we left home, we then proceeded on our way again & with much fatigue reacht Perks, near New Haven River, where we put up for ye Night.
The Family here were most of them Sick with ye Mesels [measles]. Wilson this day kill'd a small Snake.
Thuesd: ye 6th is a clowdy day; After Breakfast we proceeded on our way & found ye Road very muddy; we made a short stop at Elkanah Lathrops, & reacht our Friend Heights at about noon, where we were generously
tretreated with a good Din'r, Horse bating &c, after which we proceeded on our way & alittle above Barnams fell in comp'y with one Stewart, whose comp'y we had several miles, & was very agreable. we travel'd while Quite dark & were finally oblig'd to put up at one Burrit, in Hynesburg, but could procure no kind of Fodder for our horse, tho' our own Entertainment was pretty comfortable.
So Elkanah was living somewhere between the New Haven River and possibly the town of New Haven, Vermont and Hinesburg, VT. There is a Barnumstown between New Haven and Hinesburg if is the same as "above Barnams" in the diary. It's unclear whether Barnams is a person or a place.
