Bartley, Scot. Vermont Families in 1791, Vol. 1, Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1992.

Page vi - This work is based directly on the Department of Commerce & Labor, Bureau of the Census' Head of Families at the first census of the United States taken in the year 1790: Vermont (Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1907, several times reprinted). Vermont, admitted as a state in 1791, was officially enumerated in 1791. Occasionally, researchers find a person listed in both another state and Vermont. THe most likely reason is that the family lived in the first state in 1790 and migrated to Vermont before the enumeration in the Fall of 1791. Each entry gives only the name of the head of the household and enumerates the rest of the family in five categories:
  1. The number of free white males of 16 years and upward, including the Head of Household.
  2. The number of free white males under 16 years.
  3. The number of free white females, including the Head of Household.
  4. All other free persons.
  5. Slaves.
Vermont was tallied with 14,983 families totalling 85,425 individuals or 5.7 people per family unit. . . .

Each entry starts with the name of the Head of Household as spelled in the published record. the first figure is the page number of the entry in the census followed by a letter designation. "a" indicates the entry is in the first column, "b" in the second column and "c" in the third column. The second series of figures is the actual enumeration arranged in the five categories listed above. The final part is the residence (town and county) of the Head of the Household a the time of enumeration.

Page vii - All places are considered to be in Vermont unless otherwise mentioned. Other states are listed with their standard two-letter US Postal abbreviation and three- or two-letter abbreviations for Canandian provinces. All facts are carefully cited and the citation appears in square brackets after each fact or set of facts. [I've moved the sources to the end of the record b/c there is so much repetition. Families generally given to the 3rd generation, I have cut some of the third, but indicated the number of children.]

Pages 78-81 - FLETCHER, James, 67b, 1-3-3-0-0 Woodstock, Windsor Co.
James Fletcher son of Ebenezer5, Samuel4, Joseph3, Francis2, Robert1 & Elizabeth 4, Hezekiah3, Francis2, Robert1 FLETCHER b. 2/28/1757 Rutland, MA & d. 7/10/1834 Jericho [gs South Woodstock Cem]. James was likely raised by his uncle Jonathan Fletcher in Barre, MA where James enlisted in 1775 & later in 1777. He moved to Athol, MA where he enlisted as a private in Captain Ephraim Stockwell's Co., Col. Job Cushing's Regt. in 1777 marching to Benningon; enlisted with Capt. Thomas Lord's Co., Col. Job Cushing's Regt. for service near Tarrytown, Westchester Co., NY in 1777; enlisted with Capt. William Marean's Co., Col. Stearn's Regt. of guards for Cambridge MA in 1778; enlisted with Capt. William Marean's Co., Col. Jonathan Reed's 1st Regt. of guard in 1778; and finally enlisted with Capt. Josiah Wilder's Co., Col. Nathan Sparhawk's Regt. at the Rutland MA barracks. James received a pension for his services and later his widow was accorded bounty land rights. The pension also gives a more descriptive record of his service.

James, yeoman of Barre, MA bought 150 acres from Abner Allen 9/7/1778, Cheshire Co., NH [lr]. James sold this land to his brother Samuel 5/6/1784. He, husbandman of Woodstock, bought land in Woodstock on 4/24/1787 [lr]. He served as constable, selectman, school committee member, highway surveyor, grand juror, petit juror and fence viewer all in Woodstock. He signed an agreement with others in 1800 to form a Congregational Society.  12 children, 2nd named Russell.

Luke md. 7/20/1784 Walpole, NH Hannah RUSSELL b. 11/15/1754 Willington CT [vr] & d. 5/18/1840 [gs Sanfordville . . .ae. 85]

In September 1769 Robert Fletcher, Luke's father was warned, with his wife & children from Charlestown, NH. As did his brothers, Luke removed to Deerfield & Northfield, then in Hampshire Co, from whree he served in the Revolutionary War.

Luke was a private from Northfield MA serving in Capt. Nathan Wakin's Co., Col. John Paterson's Regt. twice in 1775. He served again as a private in Capt. Joseph Slarrow's Co., Col. Ezra Wood's Regt. twice in 1778. By 1779 he was a private in Capt. James Walsworth's Co., Col. Elisha Porter's Hampshire Co. Regt. which traveled to New London, CT. He next appeared as a private in Capt. Oliver Shattuck's Co., Hamsphire Co. Regt. commanded by Lt. Col. Barnabas Sears in 1781.  Name appears as Flicher, Fletcher & Flicher.

Luke was a member of the Universal Society (Baptist) in Rockingham on 10/11/1791 and had a child (probably a daughter) who died there 1/14/1792. This was likely the Luke Fletcher found in the 1800 census for Chesterfield, NH. He next appeared on an 1812 Grand List in Calais, Orange Co, from which he applied for his pension in 1818. He was at Randolph in 1820 & Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY in 1830 & 1840. 6 children

Hoxxey was one of the earliest settlers of Mount Holly, living in the Bowlsville section of town. Bowlsville is the section of Mt. Holly that was originally part of Wallingford & Jackson's Gore. No information has been found prior to his settling in Mount Holly. Land deeds for property he sold over the years can be found but the original purchase or acquisition of his land is still undetermined.  His estate was distributed and it states "First setoff - Hoxxey Barber - set of to him the following piece of land, to wit being a part of the Eighth and ninth lots as laid and numbered in sd town and beginning at the South east corner of the Eighth lot thence running south to a certain beech tree about seven rods South of Hoxxey Barber land to a stake and stone then east by John Clark land . . . " [lr].

Note 1 - His wife Rhoda was listed in their marriage record as follows: "These lines certify that Hoxxey Barber & Rhoda Barber were lawfully married by me on Septr the 12th AD 1790. Joseph Randall Justice of Peace. Attest Simon Dickerman town Clerk."  It is unclear as to whether her maiden name was Barber or if the clerk is entering her as Mrs. Barber. It should be noted that the town of Mount Holly was incorporated in 1792, two years after this event occurred. Also, an infant son of this couple died five days before this marriage, calling into question the year of the marriage. This fact differs with the undocumented manuscript at Vermont Historical Society which gives a more probable indication of her maiden name.

Hoxxey & Rhoda had 7 or 8 children between 1790 and 1813.

Susannah md. 1) ca 1758 Richard SMITH, Jr. anc unk. He was b. 1727, d. 1761.  - had son Graves b. 1759, d. 1828.

David enlisted on 5/1/1775 as a lieutenant under Capt. George Pitkin, 2nd Co. 4th Regt, Col. Hinman and discharged on 12/20/1775. He next served as a lieutenant with the 7th Co. (Capt. John SImons) in Col. Wolcott's Regt. and was at Boston from Jan to Mar of 1776.

Capt. Johnson, as he was often called, was one of the first settlers of Wardsborough, South District and appeared frequently in the Dover town records. In 1789, he was selected moderator of the first town meeting for the South District and was elected town clerk, a post he held until 1796; he also served as a selectman in 1789. He served as a road supervisor in 1790, helped set up the school districts in 1793, and was a founding member of the United Religious Society in 1802.

In 1802, David was one of five citizens of the South District to ask that a petition be sent to the General Assembly requesting the South District of Wardsborough be recognized as a separate town. After submitting the petition annually for several years, the request was granted in 1810 and the South District became the town of Dover.

David left no will. The inventory for his estate was filed during the 9/4/1813 court session. At the 1/27/1814 court session, Susannah petitioned the court for possession of certain articles from the personal estate. The real estate was divided during the 9/1814 cour session; this document sets off Susannah's dower portion and names the daughters by first name and married surname. On 3/11/1815, the daughters & their husbands sold their parts of the estate to William Bugbee after specifying that Susannah was to have "the improvement of" one half of the house and barn "during her life" as her widow's dower.
