In Memoriam August, no date

1774 Abraham Denton in Shenandoah Co., VA age 74.  He was the son of Abraham & Mary (Thorne) Denton and born in Hempstead, NY in 1700.  Abraham married Mary O’Dell in Orange Co., NY and they had at least one son, James. 

1823 Elizabeth (Johnson) Hinkle the daughter of Caspar & Catherine (Morse) Johnson was born in Pennsylvania.  She married Charles Hinkle ca. 1761  and they had at least three children: Caspar, William and Charles.  Catherine wrote a will in Shelby Co., KY in August 1823:
The Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Hinkle of Shelby County State of Kentucky considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory (Blessed be Almighty God for the same).  Do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Charles Hinkle all my beds, bed clothes and bedsteads.  I give and bequeath to my daughters all my clothes to be equally divided amongst them their heirs etc. I will and order that Elizabeth Hinkle daughter of my son Charles, have my large walnut chest also I give and bequeath to my children Each and every one included, heirs, etc. all my money – notes, accounts & claims – to be equally divided among them.  And lastly I hereby appoint my son Charles Hinkle executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord 1823.

In Memoriam August 31st

1623 Elizabeth Lake buried in North Benfleet, England,  daughter of John & Margaret (Reade) Lake, she was about 8 weeks old.

1715 Deacon John Loomis age 65 the son of Deacon John & Elizabeth (Scott) Loomis. 

1945 Mary (Gibson) Runyon age 81 in Pewee Valley, KY.  Born in Kentucky in 1863 she was the daughter of William & Mildred (Neal) Gibson.  Mary married Michael Runyon and they had three children: Mildred, Fannie and Ruth.  She is buried in Floydsburg, KY.

2000 Mabel (Franklin) Snell age 58.  She was the wife of Billie Snell and they had at least two children: Kurt and Kim.

In Memoriam August 30th

1648 Anne (Lawrence) Peck buried in St. Andrew’s churchyard, Hingham, England.  She was the wife of Rev. Robert Peck and they had eight children:   Robert, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Samuel, Daniel and Anne.  Robert and Anne came to Hingham, MA in 1638 to flee persecution in England.  Once Oliver Cromwell came to power in England they went back to their home in England.  Several of their children remained in Massachusetts.

1823 Mary Clark age 8 the daughter of Samuel & Phebe (Sayre) Clark.

1875 John Baughman son of Johann Baughman age 88.

In Memoriam August 29th


1920 Emily (Rose) Clark in Lawrence Co., OH age 77.  She was born there in 1842 the daughter of Lewis & Margaret (Lambert) Rose.  Emily married Levi Clark and they had four children: Delbert, John, Anolia and Alberta.  She is buried in Aid Cemetery in Lawrence Co., OH.

1992 James C. Barnfield, 52, of Cisne, died in a three car accident in Marion County at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 1992.
Mr. Barnfield had been disabled a number of years but had worked at the AMF plant in Olney 14 years.

1689 Thomas Loomis in Windsor, CT age 65.  He was born in England in 1624 the son of Joseph & Mary (White) Loomis and immigrated to New England at age 14 with his parents.  In 1653 he married Hannah Fox and they had four children: Thomas, Thomas (2nd), Hannah and Mary.  He married 2) Mary Judd in 1663 and they had 7 children: Elizabeth, Ruth, Sarah, Jeremiah, Mabel, Mindwell and Benjamin. 


1951 Robert Speer son of Columbus & Louisa (Long) Speer in LaGrange, KY, he was 78.  He married Bettie Caldwell and they had five children: Clara, Luann, Elizabeth, Mildred and Robert.  Robert is buried in Floydsburg Cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

In Memoriam August 27th

1688 John Loomis wrote his will.  He was born 1622 in England, sailed to Boston on the Susan & Ellen at age 16 with his parents.  In 1640  John was admitted to the church in Windsor, CT, he was granted 40 acres in 1643 and married Elizabeth Scott there in 1649.  In 1652 John moved his family to Farmington, CT where they lived until 1660 when they moved back to Windsor.  John & Elizabeth had thirteen children: John, Joseph, Thomas, Samuel, Daniel, James, Timothy, Nathaniel, David, Samuel, Isaac, Elizabeth and Mary.  At age 66 on August 27th he wrote his will:
John Loomiss senior doe beinge of a competent understandinge and memory ordayne and appoynt this my Last will and Testament.
In primis my will is that my eldest son John shall have a double portion of my estate in Land yt to bee accounted for part that he have already beene possessed of and by this I give liberty to bee assured of.
My will is that all my land on both sides ye River shall be equally devided between all my children now livinge I leave itt in charg in my will yt there bee indeavered of all a ready complyance to agree in ye devission itt beinge so small devissions I know not how to pleas myself nor them My will is yt my daughter Elizabeth shall have equall portion with my sons excepting John of ye moveable estate my will is yt my wife shall have ye product of ye thirds of all my land as longe as she lives and that ye house homested & Barne Remayne to my wife as longe as she lives and ye free dispose of itt amongst my children when she dies & thatt ye 3rd prt of my moveable estate of what she shall chuse to bee to her free dispose amongst my children
My will is yt my son Thomas's two sons shall have ten pound a pees of my moveable estate I apoynt my wife and son John Executors of this my will always provided yt my Just debt shall bee payd out of my moveable estate and if itt will not reach every one proportionable shall abete

1688 John Lathrop in Wallingford, CT age 42.  He was born in Boston, MA in 1645 the son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop.  John married Ruth Royce.

1889 Emma (Lathrop) Smith in Illinois age 33.  She was born in 1856 the daughter of Levi & Louisa (Draper) Lathrop. Emma married 1) ? Anderson ca. 1775 and 2) Oliver Smith in 1888.  She is buried in Lone Tree / Prairieton Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IL.

1761 Ann (Backus) Lathrop age 66 in Connecticut.  She was the wife of Nathaniel Lathrop.

1836 Jacob Young in Tampico, IN age 72.  He was born ca. 1764 in Mecklenberg, NC the son of John & Ann Young.  Jacob married 1) Rachel Goodnight and 2) Catherine -----.  Jacob was the father of fifteen children: Mary, an unnamed son, John, Elizabeth, Michael, Rachel, Sarah, Juliette, William, Andrew, Solomon, Susan, Martha and Hetty.  Jacob & Rachel are the great-grandparents of Harry Truman. They are buried in Waskom Cemetery in Jackson Co., IN.


1917 Samantha (Lathrop) Roney the daughter of Henry & Rachel (Laws) Lathrop was born in Richland Co., IL in 1845.  She married David Roney in 1869 and they had a daughter Cora who died young.  Samantha was 72 when she died.  They are buried in Amity Cemetery in Richland Co., IL.

1652 Mary (White) Loomis in Windsor, CT.  The daughter of Robert & Bridget (Allgar) White she was baptized in Shalford, England in 1590.  Mary married Joseph Loomis in Messing, England in 1614 and they had eight children: Sarah, Joseph, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Thomas, Nathaniel and Samuel.  The family immigrated to Massachusetts on the Susan & Ellen in 1638 and moved to Connecticut in 1639.  Mary was 61 when she died.

1653 Sarah (Hill) Loomis age 32 in Windsor, CT.  Baptized in England in 1621, she married Joseph Loomis in 1646 and they had three children: Sarah, Joseph and Mary.  Sarah was the daughter-in-law of Mary (White) Loomis above.

1721 Zerviah (Bushnell) Holden age 65 in Norwich, CT.  She was the daughter of Capt. Benajah & Zerviah (Leffingwell) Bushnell.  Zerviah was born in Norwich in 1721.


1857 Sarah Long 11 month old daughter of James & Elizabeth Long.  She is buried in Long Cemetery in Crestwood, KY.

1870 Leonard Cagle Gurley in Wayne Co., IL age 47.  The son of William & Polly (?) Gurley he was born in North Carolina in 1823.  He married 1) Nancy Warren and they had six children: Daniel, John, Eliza, William, Sarah and Mary and 2) Susannah Morehead and they had seven children: Henry, Nancy, Alfred, Elizabeth, James, Alice and Leonard.  Leonard was a farmer and ran a store in the Johnsonville area.  He is buried in Bailey Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1711 Stephen Tilden in Scituate, MA age 81.  He was the son of Nathaniel & Lydia (Huckstep) Tilden born in 1629 in Tenterden, England.  Stephen immigrated with his family at age 4.  He married Hannah Little and had at least one son Stephen.

1866 David Erwin husband of Eliza Fitzgerald, age 45.  They had two children: Sanford and Crawford.  He is buried in Hoosier Prairie Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.

1873 Elizabeth (Engle) Clark in Lawrence Co., OH age 41.  She was born in 1832 and married John Clark in Ohio.

1854 Elizabeth (Porter) Woodard in McLean Co., IL age 59.  She was born in Baltimore, MD in 1794 to Philip & Mary (Baughman) Porter. Elizabeth married Jacob Woodard and they had four children: Jacob, Eliza, Cordelia and Ann.  She is buried in the old city cemetery in Bloomington, IL.


1868 William Maulding 2 months old the son of Ambrose & Nancy (Russell) Maulding.  He is buried in Farnsworth / Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1613 Alice (Kebbell) Perkins buried in England.  She was the wife of Francis Perkins and they had at least eight children: Henry, John, Edward, Luke, William, Thomas, Isaac and Thomas.

1754 Samuel Lathrop in Norwich, CT age 33. He was the son of Samuel & Deborah (Crow) Lathrop born in 1721.  He married Elizabeth Bishop.  Samuel’s estate was distributed in 1765 to his wife and children: Samuel, Thomas, Simeon, Susannah and Elizabeth.

1906 William Colclasure  age 33 in Clay Co., IL.  William was the son of William & Arabelle (Dean) Colclasure.  He was born in Clay Co., IL in 1872 and married Nellie Harrison.  William is buried in Oak Mound Cemetery in Clay Co.

1919 Elizabeth (Smith) Cooper daughter of James & Susan (Runyon) Smith in Shelby Co., KY at age 78.  She was born in 1840 and married ? Cooper.

1688 Nathaniel Loomis son of Joseph & Mary (White) Loomis in Windsor, CT at age 62.  He was born ca. 1626 in England and immigrated with his parents at age 12 on the Susan & Ellen.  He married Elizabeth More in 1653 and they had twelve children: Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Abigail, Josiah, Jonathan, David, Hezekiah, Moses, Mindwell, Ebenezer, Mary and Rebecca. 

1859 Lee Maulding age 70 in Illinois.  He was the son of Ambrose & Peggy Maulding born ca. 1790 and married Mary Trammel.  They had four children: James, Lucy, Ambrose and William.  Lee is buried Farnsworth/Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.


1874 Eva (Bechtold) Erkman age 37 in White Co., IL.  She was born in Bavaria in 1837 the daughter of Nicholas & Christina Bechtold.  Eva married Jacob Erkman and they had six children: George, Clara, Katherine, Magdalena, Elizabeth and Jacob.  Eva is buried in Newman Cemetery in White Co., IL.

1842 Charles Hinkle the son of Charles & Susannah (March) Hinkle was born ca. 1807 in North Carolina.  The family moved to Shelby Co., KY where Charles married Matilda Roney.  The couple had six children: Elizabeth, Mary, William, John, Susan and Emily.  He wrote his will at age 35.

In Memoriam August 17th

1728 Anthony Hinkle while answering a call of a sick parishioner one very dark night, upon his return home, his horse stumbled, fell and fatally injured him.  He died the same night at his home on Chestnut Hill.  Anthony was born in Merenberg, Germany in 1668 the son of George & Anna (Dentzer) Hinkle.  He married Maria Dentzer and they had twelve children: Johann Nicholas, Johanna Fredericka, Johann Melchior, Johann Gerhard, Maria Elizabeth, George Rudolphus, Anna, Johann Justus, Benigna Maria, Jacob Anthony, Maria Catherine and Johann Philip.  Anthony was a minister in Germany and after migrating to Pennsylvania in 1717 he founded St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Germantown, PA.  He was 59 years old at the time of his death and is buried at St. Michael’s.

1837 Phoebe (Morgan) Fishback in Kentucky age 85.  The daughter of William & Elizabeth (?) Morgan she was born in Fauquier Co., VA in 1751.  She married Jacob Fishback in 1771 and they had eleven children: William, John, James, Annie, Elizabeth, Jesse, Charles, Hannah, Lucy, Samuel and an unnamed infant.  Phoebe is buried in the Fishback Graveyard in Winchester, KY.

1887 Elizabeth (Wheeling) Draper daughter of William & Elizabeth (VanHorn) Wheeling in Johnson Co., IN.  Born in Henry Co., KY in 1821, Elizabeth was 65.  She married Benjamin Draper in 1841 and they had thirteen children: two unnamed daughters, Thomas, Oliver, Mahlon, Maranda, Harriet, Clara, Mary, George, Benjamin, John and Lennie.  She is buried in Glade Cemetery in Johnson Co., IN.

1944 John Clark in Lawrence Co., IN age 74.  Born in 1869 he was the son of Levi & Emily (Rose) Clark.  He married Delia -----.  John is buried in Aid Cemetery in Lawrence Co., OH.

1758 Hannah Waterman age 49 the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Lathrop) Waterman.  She was born in 1708.

1859 Maria Hopkins age 4 in Wayne Co., IL.  Born in Wayne Co., IL in 1855 she was the daughter of Clinton & Beulah (Huddleston) Hopkins.  Maria is buried in Olive Branch Cemetery.


1925 Lizzie Lathrop in Indiana age 67.  The daughter of James & Mary (Butler) Lathrop she was born in 1858 and is buried in Southlawn Cemetery in Greensburg, IN.

1760 Mary (Loomis) Bliss in Massachusetts age 74.  She was born in Windsor, CT in 1686 the daughter of Josiah & Mary (Rockwell) Loomis.  Mary married Samuel Bliss and they had five children: Mary, Lucy, Hannah, Samuel and Solomon. 

1981 In Memory of John Robertson, Jr. - Killed at age 55, 30 years ago - August 14th.

Our lives were turned upside down all because of a careless OTR truck driver.  Our dad an IDOT worker in a work zone was cheated out of his retirement with his children, and grandchildren.  Slow down so they don't end up paying the price again.  Still missed by all who knew him.

1874 Dicy (Kirby) Speer in Leesville, IN age 69.  She was born in 1805 and married Andrew Speer in 1830.  They had twelve children.  Jesse, James, Talbert, William, Joseph, Elizabeth, Robert, Andrew, John, George, Susan and Dicy.  Dicy is buried in Wever Speer Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IN.

1933 Nancy (Milner) Darnielle in Galestown, MD she was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1867 the daughter of Joseph & Eliza (Gurley) Milner.  She married James Darneille.


1988 Tillman Withrow in Norwalk, CA the son of Franklin & Mary (Dove) Withrow he was born in Sallisaw, OK in 1899.  Tillman married Susie Hale in 1922 and they had 11 children: Wilma, Betty, Maggie, Fines, Dorothy, Cledus, James, Ronnie, Roddie, Bobbie and Glenda.

1752 Mary (Porter) Loomis age 79.  The daughter of John & Joanna (Gaylord) Porter she was born in 1672 and married Hezekiah Loomis in 1690.  Mary is buried in Edwards Cemtery in South Windsor, CT.

1851 Michael Goodnight age 98, the son of George.  He married Charlotte Durall in 1805 and they had ten children:  Tabitha, Catherine, Stephen, John, Harriet, Martha, Matilda, Robert, Jane and Mary.

2001 Elmer C. Gentle, 91 of Mt. Vernon died 6:30 a.m. Aug. 12, 2001 at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.

1713 Elizabeth (?) Blackburn in Loughall, Ireland.  She was the wife of John Blackburn.

1898 Jno. F. Powell died aged 81 y, 10 m, 5 d, Aug. 11, 1898 of chronic nocteas.  He was a merchant born in Richford, VT the son of Jno. & Aurelia (Fassett) Powell.  He was a widower.


1905 Albert Crumbacher age 37 in Wayne Co., IL.  He was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1868 the son of James & Nancy (Gentle) Crumbacher.  He married Ollie Trotter in 1888 and they had three children:  Mabel, Guy and Fred. Albert is buried in Gunion, IL.

1914 John C. Speer, son of Andrew and Nancy Evans Speer, died at the parental home in Jackson township on Tuesday of last week, being a little past forty years of age. While he had been ill for some time, his illness was not known to be of a serious nature until very recently.  He was a young man who was held in high esteem by those of his acquaintances, and his death while in the prime of life, is a deep sorrow to his aged parents, brothers and sisters.  Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mr. Demgree of Earlham, were held on last Thursday, and burial in the Worthington cemetery.  Besides his parents he leaves four brothers and six sisters.

1881 Andrew Draper son of Thomas & Catherine (Harbert) Draper was born in Virginia in 1815.  He moved with his parents to Indiana before 1820 where he married Eve Montgomery in 1835.  The couple had nine children: Rachel, Martha, George, Angeline, Louisa, Hugh, Thomas, Lamberton and Elizabeth.  On August 10, 1881, Andrew wrote his will:

1982 Richard Summers age 45.  He was born in Olney IL in 1936 and married Phyllis Lathrop in 1956.  They had three children: David, Duane and Denise.

1882 Laura Barber the daughter of Alfred & Louisa (Peters) Barber age 11 in Illinois.  She was born in Illinois in 1870 and is buried in Bethel-Harris Cemetery near Seymour, IL.


1986 Sylvia (Bryan) Garrison age 92.  She was born in Clay Co., IL in 1894 to Wesley & Catherine (Smith) Bryan.  Sylvia married Edwin Garrison in 1915.

1882 Emily Fitzgerald age 8 days the daughter of William & Emily (Smith) Fitzgerald. 

1927 George Lathrop, age 37 by accident - struck by unknown Frisco train causing fractured skull, inquest in St. Louis, MO.  The son of Ezra & Nancy (Boly) Lathrop, he was  born in 1890 in Allenton, MO.  He served in World War I and afterward worked as a day laborer.  George is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.


1931 Joseph Erkman in Carmi, IL the son of John & Catherine (Burkhardt) Erkman he was 56.  Joseph was born in Illinois in 1847 and married Laura Bingman in 1901.  They had at least one daughter Ruby.  Joseph was a farmer and is buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, IL.

1845 Phebe (Sayre) Clark age 48.  She was born in 1797 and married Samuel Clark in Letart Falls, OH.  They had fourteen children:  Mary, Lydia, Ephraim, Hannah, Sarah, Caroline, Amos, Esther, Robert, Rosetta, Charles, Malvina, John and Eliza.



1876 Caspar Johnson age 80 died in Pennsylvania.  He was born there in 1796 and was the son of Caspar & Deborah (Admason) Johnson.  He is buried in Tohickon Cemetery in Bedminster, PA.

1908 Patrick Williamson, 78 in Jefferson Co., IL.  He was born in 1829 to Henry & Nancy (Nothen?) Williamson.  Patrick married Sarah Dow.  He is buried in Laird Cemetery in Jefferson Co. IL.

1959 Lewis Peugh age 70 in Marshall Co., IL the son of Daniel & Laura (Kepley) Peugh.  He was born 1888 in Ingraham, IL and married Alta Smith in 1912.  They had three children: Beulah, Ruby and Lewis.

1980 Claude Dulaney in South Dakota at age 82.  The son of William & Ida (Lathrop) Dulaney was born in Keenes, IL in 1898. He is buried in Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

1993 Diana (Shaw) Shields age 32 in Carmi, IL.  She was the daughter of Vershel & Ruby (Haile) Shaw born in 1961.  She married ? Shields and had four children: Paul, Dion, Nicole and Maranda.  Diana is buried in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, IL.

1777 Benadam Gallop age 72 in Stonington, CT.  He was born in Stonington in 1755 the son of Capt. John & Hannah (Lake) Gallop.  Benadam married Esther Prentice and they had seven children: Hannah, Esther, Mercy, Banadam, Joseph, Margaret and Lucy.


1959 John Fitzgerald, the son of James & Rebecca (Ward) Fitzgerald died in Flora, IL age 83.  He was born in Morehouse, MO in 1875.  John married 1) Dora Toliver and 2) Nellie Cooper.  He had three children: Carl, Louise and Paul.  John is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, IL.

In Memoriam August 1st


1868 Mary Peters age 15 in Champaign Co., IL the daughter of Francis & Sarah (Runyon) Peters.  She was born in 1852 in Shelby Co., KY.  Mary is buried in Bethel-Harris Cemetery near Seymour, IL.

1868 Emma Peters,  sister of Mary above.  Born June 9, 1868 in Champaign Co., IL, she was 22 days old. Emma is buried in Bethel-Harris Cemetery and shares a stone with Mary.

1871 Susan (Dawson) Young in Kentucky age 59.  She was born in 1812 and married Michael Young in 1835 as his second wife.  They had no children together, but she raised Michael’s children as her own. Susan is buried in the Simpsonville, KY cemetery.

1926 James Colclasure in East St. Louis, IL age 69.  He was born in Louisville, IL in 1860 the son of Robert & Frances (Tracy) Colclasure.  He married Amanda Sowder in 1880.  They are buried in Oak Mound Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.
