In Memoriam May 31st

1886 Cora Long age 22 in Kentucky.  She was born in Kentucky in 1864 the daughter of John & Nancy Long.  She is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

1913 Fredreka Propst was born in Germany July 30, 1845.  The family came across the water and settled in Indiana when she was six years old.
In 1861 she was married to Mike Dietz of Indiana.  Seven children were born to them.  Her husband died with cholera when that disease visited Carmi in 1872.
In 1875 she was married to Jacob Erkman.  To them eight children were born.  Mr. Erkman died August 13, 1908.

1938 Martha (Spry) Holler in Louisville, IL the daughter of Daniel & Susan (Brooks) Spry age 70.  Born in Indiana in 1867 she married Willis Holler in 1886 and they had eight children: Jerry, John, Jesse, Alma, Eva, Frank, Bessie and Cecil.  She is buried in Orchard Hill Cemetery in Louisville, IL.

1939 Frederick Erkman age 61 the son of Jacob & Fredericka (Propst) Erkman.  He was born in White Co., IL in 1877 and never married.  Frederick went into the  US Army in 1899 during the Philippine-American War and reinlisted several times through the end of World War I.  He died in Danville, IL and is buried in Danville National Cemetery. 

2002 Grace T. Courtright, 86, of East Peoria, formerly of Flora, died at 9:15 p.m. May 30, 2002 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

1795 Mary (Landis) Goodnight Flanigan in Mercer Co., KY, age 85.  Born ca. 1710 she was the daughter of Christopher Landis.  She married 1) Hans Michael Goodnight 1762 in Virginia or North Carolina and they had eight children: Abraham, Henry, Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Rachel, Sarah and Isaac.  She married 2) ? Flanigan ca. 1787 in Kentucky.


1924 David Smith age 68, the son of William & Clarinda (Benefield) Smith was born in Illinois in 1855.  He married Mary Vickrey in 1881 and they had eight children: Aneil, Curtis, Orvis, Niman, Mavin, Murval, Harry and Arden.

1803 Solomon Bliss age 66 the son of Samuel & Mary (Loomis) Bliss.  He was born in 1737.


1939 Hilda (Mick) Plocher daughter of Rudolph & Anna (Smith) Mick age 29 in St. Louis, MO.  She was born in 1910 and married Delmar Plocher.  Hilda is buried in Marine Cemetery in St. Jacob, IL.


1959 James Smith age 65 the son of James & Elizabeth (Boliger) Smith was born in 1893.  He married Bessie Nemnich and they had seven children: Lorene, Betty, Joyce, Roland, Clyde, Warren and Lynette.

1597 Alice (Hanson) Bradford buried in Austerfield, England age 34.  She was baptized in Austerfield in 1562 the daughter of John & Margaret (Gressam) Hanson.  Alice married William Bradford in 1584 and they had at least three children: Margaret, Alice and William.

1898 ? Lovelle son of Charles & Lottie (Colclasure) Lovelle.

1989 Rev. Harry Erkman, 99, uncle of Genevieve Powers of Evansville, died yesterday in a nursing home in Amsterdam, N.Y.
Rev. Erkman, a Presbyterian minister, was born in Carmi, Ill., and graduated from Carmi High School in 1908.  He graduated in 1913 from the University of Missouri, and from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in 1916.
Rev. Erkman, a World War I Army veteran, was honorary mayor of the village of Broadalbin, N.Y.

1620 Richard Lake buried in Wickford, England.  The son of John & Margaret (Reade) Lake, he was baptized May 21, 1620 in Wickford. 

1695 Sarah (Steele) Judd  daughter of John & Rachel (Talcott) Steele born 1638.  She married Thomas Judd ca. 1658.

1867 Louisa (Draper) Lathrop age 41 in Lawrence Co., IL. The daughter of Thomas & Catherine (Harbert) Draper, she was born in Indiana in 1825.  Louisa married Levi Lathrop in 1842 and they had eleven children: Thomas, Ezra, Nancy, Catherine, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Marion, Emma, Joel, George and Grant.  She is buried in Lone Tree Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IL.

1919 Christina Dempsey age 1 in White Co., IL.  She was the daughter of Warner & Edna (Trapp) Dempsey.  Christina is buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, IL.

1983 Mrs. Viola Erkman, 78, of 607 W. Main St., widow of the late Russell Erkman, a former Sims resident, died at 10 p.m. Sunday May 22, 1983 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Erkman entered the hospital last Wednesday after suffering a broken hip at her apartment.  She also suffered from a heart condition.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Oakley Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. 
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Erkman was born at Mill Shoals July 7, 1904, the daughter of Gilbert and Amanda (Rodgers) Jackson.  She attended school at Mill Shoals.
She was married to Russell Erkman for over 50 years.  He preceded her in death in 1977.  Mr. Erkman was a construction worker for the railroad.
Mrs. Erkman was a housewife and homemaker and never was employed outside the home.  She moved to Fairfield in 1979 and stayed frequently with her niece, Mrs. Ruth Belangee, of Bonnie.  Mrs. Erkman was going to live with her niece after her release from the hospital.
She was a member of the Sims Baptist Church at Sims.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bernell Golden, of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Erkman had no children.

1967 Charles Wagner III in Boulder, CO the son of Charles Wagner II he was 61.  Born in Russel Gulch, CO in 1906 he married Rosalie Gurley in 1941. They had two daughters: Charyl and Carolyn.

1923 Pierce Bohannon died in Pewee Valley, KY age 81.  He was born in Simpsonville, KY  in 1842 the son of Richard & Nancy (?) Bohannon.  He married Sarah Smith and they had at least one daughter Iva.  Pierce served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.  He is buried in Simpsonville, KY.


1983 Mrs. Hazel (Henry) Lathrop, 73, died May 19 at her home in Onarga, Ill.  She was a former Sumner resident.
Mrs. Lathrop was a member of United Methodist Church in Onarga where a memorial service was held May 21.  Interment followed in Sumner Cemetery at 3 p.m. with graveside rites by the Rev. Glenn Wittrup.  Funeral arrangements were made by Knapp Funeral Home staff of Onarga.
She was a daughter of E.C. and Rosa Shick Henry.  Her husband Malcolm H. Lathrop, and an infant daughter preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Harold Lathrop of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; two daughters, Sandra Frick [sic] of Onarga and Sharon Fink of Peotone; one brother Omer Henry of Silver Springs, Md.; one sister, Fern Henry of Sumner; two sisters-in-law Wanda Laughlin of Olney and Ruby Henry of Greenwood, Ind.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The Lathrops were former residents of Sumner, where Malcolm Lathrop was postmaster from 1932 until 1936 and an employee in the First National Bank in that city for many years.  The family moved to Onarga in 1948 whre Mr. Lathrop was employed in the First National Bank until his death in 1954.

1667 Elizabeth (White) Goodwin age 75 in Farmington, CT.  The daughter of Robert & Bridget (Allgar) White was born in Essex, England in 1592.  She married William Goodwin in Shalford, England in 1616 and had at least one daughter Elizabeth.

James Oliver Osborn died Sunday at his home in Sims.  He was 44 years old and had been in impaired health for several months.
Surviving are his widow, one daughter Mrs. Irene Legg of Wayne City, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Rogers of Wayne CIty, Mrs. Rose Harmon of Chicago and Mrs. Flossie Robertson of Bluford, and one brother Home Osborn of Four Acres O.  Another brother Everett Osborn died two weeks ago. 
Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in Sims at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon.  Burial will be made in the Thomason cemetery west of Wayne City.

1941 Mary (Wiegele) Erkman in Saline Co., IL age 70, she was the daughter of Frank Wiegele.  Mary was born in Straussburg, Germany in 1871 and immigrated to Indiana in 1885 where she married John Erkman in 1890.  They had eleven children: infant child, Mamie, Elizabeth, William, Everett, Clarence, infant child, Irene, Mary , George and Mildred.  She is buried in Big Ridge Cemetery in Saline Co., IL.

1640 William Rockwell age 49 in Windsor, CT.  Baptized 1591 in Fitzhead, England, he was the son of John & Honor (Newton) Rockwell.  He married Susanna Capen in 1624 in Dorchester, England.  The couple migrated to Dorchester, MA in 1630 on the Mary & John.  They had seven children: Joanna, John, Samuel, Ruth, Joseph, Mary and Sarah. 

1731 William Gallop son of Captain John & Hannah (Lake) Gallop age 73 in Stonington, CT.  He was born there in 1658 and married Sarah Cheesebrough in 1687.  They had four children: Sarah, Mary, Hannah and Temperance.  William served as a representative to the General Court of Connecticut between 1703 and 1717.  He is buried in Whitehall Burying Ground.



1814 Philip Hinkle in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania the son of Jacob & Anna (?) Hinkle he was 75 years old.  Philip was born in Germantown, PA in 1739, married Mary Johnson in 1759 and they had eleven children: Philip, Catherine, Mary, Margaret, Barbara, Ann, Joseph, Casper, Elizabeth, Anthony and Charles.  Philip worked as a blacksmith, farmer and ran a tavern.  He is buried in Deep Run Mennonite Cemetery in Bucks Co., PA.

1710 Hannah (Little) Tilden the daughter of Thomas & Ann (Warren) Little was born in Plymouth, MA ca. 1637. She married Stephen Tilden in 1661 and had at least one son Stephen.  She died in Marshfield, MA age 73.

1725 Dea. Samuel Rockwell, Jr., son of Samuel Rockwell and Mary Norton born in Windsor, CT.  1694/5 he married Elizabeth Gaylor daughter of John & Mary (Drake) Gaylord in Windsor, CT.  They had at least four children: Elizabeth, Samuel, William and Matthew.  Inscription: Here Lieth the Body of Mr. Sam'll Rockwell  He was Chosen Feb'ry 1716 in the Place of a Deacon and Departed This Life May the 13th 1725 in the 58 Year of his Age

1852 Catherine (Bailey) Saltzman in Pulaski Co., MO age 85.  Born in 1767 she married Peter Saltzman in 1802 in Kentucky.  The couple had four children: Daniel, John, William and Jessie.  The family moved to Pulaski Co., MO circa 1835.

1923 Anna (Osborn) Richardson age 28 the daughter of Louis & Idella (Robertson) Osborn in Jefferson Co., IL.  She was born in Wayne Co., IL In 1894 and married Delbert Richardson in 1912, they had three children: Raymond, Melvin and Laylen.  She is buried in Salem / Mateer Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1706 Henry Norris in Elizabeth, NJ age 61.  Born ca. 1645 in England he was the son of Edward & Dorothy Norris.  Henry married Abigail Stratton and they had at least one child Hannah.  The family immigrated to the U.S. before 1670.  He left a will:
Henry Norris of Elizabeth Town, yeoman, dated Mar. 26, 1705.  Children: Henry, Abigail wife of Daniel Sharp of Woodbridge, Hannah Clarke, Ester Crane, Samuel, Ruth, Sarah, Margaret, (His wife Abigail Stratton, daughter of John, of Easthampton) Real and personal estate.  Executors:  son Samuel and daughters Ruth and Sarah.  Witnesses:  Isack and Samuel Whitehead, Benj. Spining.  Codicil of May 4, 1706, appoints Benj. Price, Jr., and Andrew Hampton of Elizabethtown as overseers.  Witnesses:  Samuel Whitehead, Daniel Sate.  Proved and Ruth Morris sworn in as executrix, May 21, 1706.

1925 Theodore Ellis son of John Ellis died in Girard, IL.  Born in Greenville, IL in 1837 he married Nancy Gurley in 1885.  They had three children: Jesse, Grace and Florence.  Theodore is buried in Girard Cemetery in Girard, IL.

In Memoriam May 9th

1657 Gov. William Bradford age 69 in Plymouth, MA.  Born in Yorkshire, England in 1588 he was the son of William & Alice (Hanson) Bradford and married 1) Dorothy May in Leiden, Holland in 1613.  They had a son John and immigrated to Plymouth in 1620 on the Mayflower.  From 1621 to 1657 William served as governor of Plymouth Colony.  He married 2) Alice Carpenter in Plymouth in 1623 and they had three children: William, Mercy and Joseph.  He is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Plymouth, MA.

1682 Thomas Bascom age 77 in Northampton, MA.  He was born ca. 1605 in England.  Thomas had a daughter Mary.
Thomas Bascom Sen[io]r of Northampton bequeathed to my son Thomas all my lands of all sorts together with my house, orchard & barn, also my cartwheels, plough, chains & all other husbandry implements & mason tools and other moveables; to my son William Janes . . . my cloth suit; to my son Robert Lymon my serge coat; residue to be divided equally between my children, viz: my son Thomas Bascom, Hannah Janes & Hephzibah Limon; my son Thomas Abascom to be executor and my well beloved & trusty friends Deacon William Holton & Deacon Medad Pumry to be overseers.

1875 Samantha (Lathrop) Laws daughter of Russell & Cynthia (Powell) Lathrop in Lawrence Co., IL.  She was born in Vermont in 1820 and married Wilson Laws in 1842.  They had no children.  Samantha is buried in Leach Cemetery in Lawrence Co., IL.

1904 William Colclasure in Clay Co., IL, age 82 the son of John & Rachel (Galbraith) Colclasure. He was born in Indiana in 1821 and married 1) Harriet Spiker ca. 1849.  They had four children: Martha, Commodore Perry, Rayford and Henry.  William married 2) Sarah Wisehart in Clay Co., IL in 1880 and they had five children: Richard, Clara, Viola, Orion and Floyd. 

1959 Mary (Rainwater) Shaw in Wayne City, IL the daughter of Henry & Mary (Lane) Rainwater born in 1895 in Illinois.  She was 64 years old.  She married Vern Shaw in Steward, IL in 1914 and they had twelve children: Herman, Betty, Opal, Dorothy, Donald, Mervin, Mildred, Marjorie, Arlene, Freda, Edith and Howard.

1868 Martha (Rainwater) Dove age 29 in Indiana.  She was the daughter of William & Mary (Rayburn) Rainwater born in 1839.  Martha married William Dove in 1856 and they had four children: Maureen, Miles, Mary and Emily.

1873 Lydia Maier daughter of Joseph & Clara (Erkman) Maier age 11 months old.



1948 John Branchcomb in Tahlequah, OK age 77  the son of Daniel & Mary (Gentle) Branchcomb.  He was born in Mt. Vernon, IL in 1871  John married Nancy Ann Hill and had at least one son: Walter.  He is buried in Blue Springs Cemetery in Gideon, OK.

In Memoriam May 7th

1913 Cloyd Maulding age 69 the son of Andrew & Hester (Hopkins) Maulding in Wayne Co., IL.  Cloyd was born in 1843 and married Elizabeth Schell.  They had four children: Elvia, Ella, Charles and infant son.  Cloyd served in Co. D of the 40th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.
1996 Mrs. Audrey Lathrop Kercher, 59, died Tuesday, May 7, 1996 in Marietta, Ga.
A native of Wayne City, Mrs. Kercher had battled cancer for over three years.
She earned a bachelors degree in business education from Southern Illinois University in 1959 and taught a number of years in northern Illinois high schools.  In 1961 she was married to Dean S. Kercher.  She spent several years as an executive secretary and later she and her husband operated the Kercher Manufacturing Company, continuing with this effort until she became critically ill.
She was born at Wayne City, Nov. 27, 1936, the daughter of Forest and Mildred Lathrop.
Mrs. Kercher spent her early childhood in Wayne City, attending grade school and high school there.  She was active in the Methodist Church MYF and remained a member of Wayne City First United Methodist Church and frequently contributed to the Mt. Zion United Methodist at Wayne City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
The remains were cremated in Marietta, Ga. and a memorial service was held at the Peachtree United Methodist Church in Atlanta Saturday, May 11.
Surviving are her husband; three sons, Jeffrey S. Kercher, with IBM and Dan S. and James S. Kercher both Georgia Tech students in Atlanta, Ga.; five brothers and sisters Phyllis Seevers, of Bridgeton, Mo.; Albert Lathrop of Yorkville; Irene Baker of Tallahassee, Fla.; John Lathrop of St. Louis, Mo.; and Grant Lathrop of East Peoria.

1994 Betty (Robertson) Schermer in Newton, IL age 62.   Born in 1931 she was the daughter of Grandill & Leafy (Lawrence) Robertson.  Betty married Aaron Schermer and they later divorced.  She is buried in Pin Oak Cemetery, Wayne Co. IL.


1994 Mrs. Edith M. (Granny) Colclasure, 82 of Plainfield, Ill., died Thursday Apr. 28, 1994 at St. Joseph medical Center in Joliet.
She was a Fairfield native and mother of Ronald Harris of Fairfield.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon (today) from the Overman-Jones Funeral Home in Plainfield, with Rev. Michael Nolan officiating.  Interment was in the Plainfield Township Cemetery.
She was married to Vernie Colclasure.
Mrs. Colclasure was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Plainfield. 
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents and one brother.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald Harris of Fairfield; and Ray and Raymond Colclasure, both of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and one great grandchild.

1977 William Snyder the husband of Minerva Fitzgerald.  They had five children: Ralph, Dale, Violet, Lawrence & Virginia.
