In the preface he states that "these notes represent an effort to arrange the various conflicting data on this famous family in a manner that will reconcile, as nearly as possible, the various lines, so as to aid future searches."
Edward Tipton is the man Heinemann points to as the possible emigrant ancestor in Maryland even though there are some gaps between him and the next known generation.
In England there is a Tipton Parish in an Urban District of South Staffordshire. It is an ancient church, and its parish registers go back to an early period.
The name Tipton appears in the Domesday Book as Tibintone. Its meaning was "the tun or town of Tib's or Tibba's people." It has been suggested on very good authority, that the name had its origin from Seventh Century St. Tybba, patroness of hunting.
As early as 1606 there were Tiptons in Bedford County, England.

In subsequent book Heinemann gives wives as Elizabeth (--?--) and Margaret (--?--) Downing March 19, 1683/4 widow of Capt. William Downing who died 1655 in Northumberland Co., VA. After Edward's death Margaret married John Hughlett.

III. Jonathan Tipton b. ? ca. 1639 d. Jan. 21, 1757. md. unknown. She may have been the daughter of John Smith as Tipton is mentioned in his will as having certain personal property at Smith's home. Smith's will dated May 31, 1737 in Calvert County, MD.
Tipton also witnessed the will of Robert Goldsborough in Ann Arundel County, MD, Nov. 23, 1700. Henry Attwood's will in Ann Arundel Co., Feb. 20, 1729 mentions 100 acres that was purchased from Jonathan Tipton.

1) John Tipton b. ?, d. ? Witness of Richard Kemp's will in Baltimore Co., MD, Nov. 25, 1725 with his brother Jonathan. Mary Kemp was given to the care of Mary Tipton until she attained her majority. The deduction is that John Tipton was married to Mary Kemp, Richard's sister.
Mary (Kemp) Tipton is probably the same person as the Mary Tipton who died Dec. 6, 1736 and is listed in St. Paul's Church, Baltimore register.

Married 1) Elizabeth / Sarah Pierce ca. 1705 & 2) Mary (--?--) after 1734. First wife mentioned in William Pierce's will, Ann Arundel Co., MD, Sep. 12, 1719. Children - see V. Generation #5-10.
3) Thomas b. 1700, d. after 1734. Married Sarah (--?--). He appears in Ann Arundel Co., MD records. He witnessed William Pearce / Pierce will on Sep. 12, 1719. He and Jonathan (2 above) were listed as nephews in that will. He later appears in St. Paul's Parish records in Baltimore Co., MD. Children - see V. Generation #11-18.
4) William b. ? d. May 6, 1726. Married Hannah (--?--). William also appears in William Pearce/Pierce will cited above. William's will is dated April 5, 1725 and proved in Baltimore Co., MD Aug. 2, 1726. Children - see V. Generation #19-21.

He may have been the Jonathan Tipton who deed land to Lawrence Snapp, Jr. in Dunmore/Shenandoa co., Dec. 24, 1774. Signed w/ a mark by both Jonathan and his wife Elizabeth (--?--). Children unknown.

10) Joseph b. ?, d. before 1842. The Tennessee Historical Society puts him as brother of Colonel John Tipton (5 above). Joseph is reported to have gone to the Wautauga District of North Carolina with Colonel John ca. 1775 and was a member of the Jonesboro Convention in 1784-1785. The brothers opposed the creation of Tennessee. Joseph served on the committee to ratify the constitution of the state of Franklin.
A Joseph Tipton was involved in a lawsuit in Frederick Co., VA in August 1790. He died in Warren Co., TN.

A John Tipton appears on the Madison Co., KY tax lists between 1797 and 1807 and on the Montgomery Co., KY tax lists between 1818 and 1833 owning a 100 acres of land.

William was in Knox Co., TN when he made application for pension July 9, 1834.

26) Isaac b. 1763, d. Jan. 6, 1827 a revolutionary war soldier, he followed his family to Tennessee. He probably married Fanny White in Knox Co., TN Oct. 12, 1809. Children - see VII Generation #58
27) Jacob b. 1765 VA, d. Nov. 4, 1791 KY or OH. He married Mary Bradford. Jacob served as a captain enlisting Mar. 19, 1791 in the Washington District of Tennessee. Three other Tipton's, probably his brothers were in his company: Jonathan, John and William. They marched to Ft. Washington near Cincinnati arriving on July 19, 1791. Due to inaction of the army, Jacob joined a militia group Nov. 4, 1791 saying "I came here to fight, and I will do it." Upon being mortally wounded his last words were: "My brave fellows, I am a dead man; do you fight on, and bravely do all you can for your country." On his way to battle he told his wife in case of his death to rename their son William as Jacob. Child - see VII Generation #59.

He and Elizabeth were involved in a lawsuit in Shenandoah Co., VA in 1797. In 1802 they sold land in Shenandoah Co., VA while living in Sullivan Co., TN. Children - see VII Generation #62-71.
30) Jonathan b. June 8, 1776 Shenandoah Co., VA his mother died in childbirth, d. Nov. 8, 1858. Served in his brother Jacob's company in 1791 and later became a colonel in the militia in 1822. He married 1) Lavina (Adams) William & 2) Margaret (--?--). Jonathan had thirteen children, but Heinemann only listed three. Children - see VII Generation 72-74.

34) Jonathan b. ca. 1767 d. Sep. 14, 1848 no proof that this man is the son of Joseph Tipton. This Jonathan moved to Marshall Co., AL where he applied for revolutionary pension. The application was rejected and the file is incomplete. He claimed to have served under Major Jonathan Tipton, but his service was discounted because he was under age 15 at the end of the war.

35) Jonathan b. Apr. 15, 1752 MD, near Baltimore, d. after 1848. Tentatively identified as Jonathan Tipton who applied for revolutionary pension in Wilson Co., TN, Sep. 25, 1832. According to the application he enlisted in Baltimore in 1781 and served as 1st Lieutenant under Capt. John Maury, Colonels Thomas Green and Frederick Decker and General Buckhannon for 2 years and 3 months. Jonathan moved to Wilson Co. in 1795.

William enlisted in Frederick Co., VA in 1778 and served five tours of duty. Came to Kentucky 1798 and settled near Mt. Sterling, KY. Montgomery Co., KY tax lists 1818 through 1832. 43) Jonathan b. 1750 Frederick Co., VA, d. Jan. 18, 1833 Cumberland Co., KY, some people say he died in Overton Co., TN. The counties are close to each other.
According to his pension application Oct. 29, 1832 he enlisted in Washington Co. NC (the section that is now Tennessee). He attained the rank of major in NC service and was at Kings Mountain. He lived in Washington Co. for 17 years after the war and then moved to Buncombe Co., NC for 27 years. Jonathan then moved to Overton Co., Tennessee.
Some people say he was a brother of #5 Col. John Tipton. This doesn't work as Col. John had a brother Jonathan b. Oct. 23, 1734.
His widow claimed his pension and received it. She gave her name as Lavinia or Leviney Stephens and stated they were married in Buncombe Co., NC in April / May 1810, 1811 or 1813. An Esau Tipton aged 54 and William Stevens testified about the marriage in 1853. According to Lavinia, she was the second wife of Jonathan and he was her first husband.
Included in the file is a letter dated Sep. 2, 1834 from Samuel & John Tipton of Irvine, Estill Co., KY regarding their father Jonathan who died in Cumberland Co., KY in 1833. They declared that their father had NOT married Lavinia Stephens/Stevens. They stated: "This woman was not the wife of Jonathan Tipton, neither was she ever married to him," and that his "only legal heirs live in this county."
The brothers were advised to sue Lavinia to recover the pension funds. She moved from Buncombe Co., NC to Overton Co., NC/TN in 1826. Later she lived in White Co., TN and finally in Reynolds Co., MO by 1861.
Heinemann identifies this Jonathan as the father of three Tiptons who moved to Kentucky with their uncle John Dauhhetee: Samuel, John and William who were in Estill Co., KY in 1808.

45) Thomas b. Mar. 1, 1748 near Baltimore, MD, d. Sep. 20, 1852 age over 114 years according to pension and DAR records. He lived for a time in Virginia seven miles from George Washington's Mt. Vernon and later in Frederick Co., VA. Thomas enlisted in June 1776 and served under Captain John Galloway. His nephew William (#42) served in the same company and testified Sep. 17, 1835 that Thomas was then "upwards of 90." After the war Thomas moved to Botetourt Co., VA. Records in that county indicate a road was surveyed from his home on Dec. 12, 1782 and he purchased 80 acres on the James River on Aug. 28, 1779. He sold out June 7, 1783 and moved to Kentucky. He next appears in the records of Madison Co., KY from 1787 to until 1792. In 1794 he was listed in the Clark Co., KY tax list. Thomas moved on to Champaign Co., Ohio where he applied for his pension on Mar. 9, 1838.
His wife's name was Mary (--?--). He is said to have had ten children, three born before 1776. Heinemann does not list the children.
46) Sylvester b. before 1775, he is said to have died at age 90. He married Mary Stark, daughter of General John Stark. Sylvester settled in what became Franklin Co., OH in 1792. Children - see VII Generation #106-109
47) Joseph assumed to be the son of Mordecai because of the allied movement of other kin. He was said to be of Shenandoah Co., VA and married Rebecca (--?--) in Monroe Co., VA. He died in Virginia. Rebecca moved to Ohio with her son Joseph settling in Franklin Co. Child - see VII Generation #110

90) Darius Bernhard b. Jan. 2, 1812, d. May 1882. His obituary in the Richmond Register, Richmond, KY states that he was the 8th son of Jabez Murray Tipton, grandson of John Tipton and great grandson of Thomas Tipton who was born in 1700.
Darius appeared on the 1840 Madison Co., KY census with 1 female 70 to 80 probably his mother or perhaps his mother-in-law.

92) Elhannon b. ca. 1805, d. after 1840. He appears in the 1822 tax list of Madison Co., KY with 130 acres formerly owned by Jabez Tipton (41 above). In the 1840 Madison Co., KY tax list with 3 sons and 2 daughters.
93) Moses b. before 1790, d. after 1840. Appears on the Madison Co., KY tax lists from 1802 to 1822 but without land or slaves. Moses lived in Shelby Co., KY in the 1840 census and is listed as being between 50 and 60 and his wife was between 60 and 70. No one else is in the household.
94) Daniel b. before 1800. He appeared in the Madison Co., KY tax list in 1817 with five acres on Otter Creek near Jabez Murray Tipton. Later Daniel had 49 acres on Station Camp Creek, which he had until 1822 when he drops out of the Madison Co., KY records. A Daniel Tipton appears in the 1829 Montgomery Co., KY tax list with 48 acres on Harper Creek.

Samuel married Mary A. Schultz. They reportedly had four girls and nine boys. Heinemann lists a single son, Robert Letcher b. 1826, d. after 1880.
103) William b. 1772, d. Aug. 24, 1857. Probably the same as William Tipton who settled in Estill Co., KY. He appears on the Garrard Co., KY tax lists between 1797 to 1802. In 1816 he appears on the Estill Co., KY tax list. In the 1830 Estill Co., KY census he is listed as being between 50 and 60 years of age with four sons and two daughters. Heinemann does not list his children.
104) John d. after 1834. Possibly the same as John Tipton in the Estill Co., KY 1830 census with five sons and seven daughters. Probably the John Tipton who married Betsey Hall in Clark Co., KY Jan. 12, 1797. He signed the letter about his father's pension in 1834 with his brother Samuel. He or his son, John, owned 100 acres on Cow Creek, Estill Co., KY in 1816.
105) John b. Aug. 14, 1786, Sevier Co., TN d. April 5, 1839 Logansport, IN. After his father was killed in Tennessee he moved with his mother, two sisters and a half brother to Harrison Co., IN. He gained fame in Indiana as an Indian fighter. John was an ensign in the Battle of Tippecanoe and rose to Brigadier General. He occupied many positions of honor and trust including U.S. Senator. 106) Thomas reported to have died at Harrisburg, OH Sept. 13, 1864. He served as a captain in the War of 1812. Thomas married Elizabeth Tomlinson before moving to Ohio. They had eleven children, Heinemann lists three.

He seems to have been the founder of the Pennsylvania branch of Tiptons. 1774 he appears on the tax list in Barree Twp., Bedford [now Huntingdon] Co. In 1784 is listed with one house and 5 whites. Children see Gen. 4 #19-26
10) Joseph b. before 1678, d. 1733, a deed recorded in Northumberland Co. VA Mrs. Elizabeth Tipton gave her son Joseph furniture and cattle on Sep. 21, 1683. Mr. Charles Nelms and Mrs. Elizabeth Downing confessing judgment to Mr. Joseph Tipton for the items mentioned in the deed. He and Timothy Sulleven witnessed John Besick's will Mar. 25, 1706 and among other documents. Joseph is listed as a cousin in Thomas Hughlet's will Nov. 7, 1724, probated Feb. 10, 1729 and received ten shillings.
Joseph left a will dated May 6, 1733 which was probated by Samuel and John Downing executors.
No mention of wife or children.

11) John - probably married Mary Kemp, he witnessed Richard Kemp's will in Baltimore Co., MD, 11/26/1725 with his brother Jonathan. A Mary Kemp died Dec. 6, 1736, St. Paul's Church Register, Baltimore, MD. Child see Gen. 5 #27.

He sold his property in Pennsylvania in 1815 and buying land in 1815. At some point he lived in Warrior Mark, Huntingdon Co., PA. Married 1) Drucilla (--?--) and 2) Elizabeth (--?--). Children see Gen. 5, #49-52.

24) Luke b. May 14, 1760, Baltimore Co., MD, d. Oct. 8, 1855, Weakly Co., TN. Lived in Bedford Co., PA Aug. 1778 when he volunteered and served two months in Capt. Tarenton's Pennsylvania Company guarding the frontiers. Luke's father moved the family into Leadmine Fort in Bedford Co., PA due to Indian trouble. He and his brother Meshach volunteered and served 1 year in Capt. Thomas Cluggage's Pennsylvania Company of Rangers and spies under Colonel Albright. He volunteered again under another Captain.
Following the war he lived in Maryland, Virginia and then Ohio. He was allowed pension on his application dated Oct. 8, 1832 when he was living in Holmes Co., OH. In 1846 he was living in Henry Co., TN. Between 1853 and 1855 he was living in Weakley Co., TN.
Wife's name not mentioned in pension application. Children, see Gen. 5, #53-57.
25) Jesse appears on Huntingdon Co. PA tax lists in 1790 with 1 male adult, 1 male child, 2 females. No further information.
