Records from Caroline County Order Books - the will and deed books of Caroline county prior to the nineteenth century have been all destroyed. The order books (court proceedings) are preserved; but the condition of several of the volumes is a disgrace to the county. Some of them are so bad that they could with safety be placed only in the hands of expert binders. It is greatly to be regretted that the authorities of a county which has played a prominent part in the history of the State and is the ancestral home of so many well-known families should not take more interest in their records.

Westmoreland County Wills - Some 17th Century Items
- Unlike its neighboring counties, Stafford, King George and Prince William, Westmoreland County escaped the ravages of the War Between the States and none of its records were destroyed or stolen at that time. However, there is a gap between 1677 and 1695 save for a few wills in 1691. It is said that about 1835 the old records were copied and it may be that the books covering the period were never returned, perhaps due to a fire at that time. However it may be, the wills and deeds are now missing, but the Order Books covering this period remain and from it we know of the probating of many wills which no longer remain.
