Mary Ellen Parks

Born: September 17, 1822, Ohio

Died: April 19, 1908, Delphos, KS

Mrs. Mary Ellen Edwards

Mary Ellen Parks was born in Muskingum County, Ohio September 17th, 1820 and died in Delphos, Kansas, April 19th, 1908; aged 88 years, 7 mo., and one day.

She was united in marriage to Solomon Edwards December 4th, 1845. To this union was born ten children, six girls and four boys, of whom one son and four daughters survive her.


She united with the Baptist Church in 1847, lived in that faith until the fall of 1907, when she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Delphos, Kansas.  She has ever lived an earnest Christian life.  Mrs. Edwards had been a shut-in for many years during which time she had been a great sufferer; but faith in her Master enabled her to be patient to the end.

The funeral services were conducted by her pastor Rev. C.M. Snyder, assisted by Rev. Geo. S. Smith in the Delphos M.E. Church Monday morning, April 20th and interment took place in the Delphos Cemetery. [Delphos Republican, April 24, 1908]

Census:

1830 Ohio - Muskingum Co., age 8, probably living in the household of Thomas Parks.  The census lists 2 males under 5, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14.

1840 Ohio - Muskingum Co., age 18 living with her parents and seven siblings.


1850 Indiana - Bartholomew Co. age 28 living with Solomon and two children ages 4 months and 2 years old. The census taker combined Solomon's family with a Branch Cheatham in the record.

1851 April 21 - Indiana, Bartholomew Co., Solomon & Mary sold 1 acre to the White Creek Baptist Church for church and cemetery.  White Creek Baptist Church cemetery is located SE1/4, SE1/4, Section 13, T8N, R4E, Ohio Township.

From Columbus take I65 south to SR 58. Turn right, go 2.6 miles west to Ogilville. Where SR 58 bends to left, go straight ahead onto county road 450S. Continue west 1.2 miles across creek and through small S curve. Turn into grass lane on left. Cemetery is platted one acre which is part woods and part plowed ground on east side of fence row beginning about 400 feet from road. 

1860 Missouri - Knox Co., age 37 living with Solomon and six children ages 2 to 13.  The census was taken in June.  She had lost a baby boy April  3rd of that year.  Her two year old son Thomas died July 14th.  The baby and Thomas are buried in the Old Edina Cemetery in Edina, MO and share a tombstone.

1870 Illinois - Clay Co. - age 47 in this census we find that Mary cannot write.  She is keeping house and has seven children still at home ages 4 to 23. 


1880 Kansas - Ottawa Co. - age 58 she is still keeping house with Solomon and they have two children living at home ages 14 and 16. 


1885 Kansas - Ottawa Co. - age 68 she and Solomon are living on a farm with their youngest child Virginia who is 18.

1895 Kansas - Mitchell Co.- age 73 living with Solomon and Jennie who is 27 and taking care of her parents.

1900 Nebraska - Nuckolls Co. - age 78, Mary is listed as a widow and she is living with Jennie's family.  Jennie has married Jesse Meacham and was taking care of his two children from a previous marriage and their son.


Excerpt from Bezelria Parks obituary:
After her [Mrs. Mary Minteer Parks] his sister Mrs. Mary Ellen Edwards, lived with him until three years ago when she died.
