Elvis Leland Meeks, 92, of Fairfield, IL, passed away at home on Sunday, May 10, 2020.
Leland was born on October 19, 1927, son of Cloyd R. and Mabel (Fitzgerrell) Meeks in Fairfield, IL. He attended Johnson Grade School and Fairfield Community High School, graduating in 1945. He later attended electrical school in Chicago, IL. He entered the US Army in 1946 at the end of World War II. He trained to be a tank driver and had ski training, before being discharged in 1947.
Leland worked at several jobs, including one at Howey Furniture Store of Fairfield, doing door to door sales in rural areas. On June 30, 1950, he married Reva Musgrave. In 1951 he started Fairhome Furniture Company with Kelly Eckleberry, before becoming full owner of the business with Reva in 1961. They were in operation for 58 years, until retirement in September of 2009.
He served as President of the Dyball Sunshine Home, and Zion's Hill Camp. He was a member of the Ellen Moore United Methodist Church, and served on many committees.
They had 6 children, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way.
He is survived by wife, Reva; children: Patricia Ramey of Junction City, AR; Thomas (Beth) Meeks of Fairfield, IL; Doris (Mike) Murray of Fosston, MN; Donald (Luan) Meeks of Pinckneyville, IL; Carl Meeks of Fairfield, IL; and Sandra (John) Walker of Richland, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Mary Alice Nettleton and Clara Lee Meeks, one brother James Meeks, and a grandson Ben Ramey.
Due to the current pandemic, a private family graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 14th, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, IL. Memorials can be made to Ellen Moore United Methodist Church or the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Expansion Fund.
