Early Adventurers on the Roanoke 1740-1760 & the Land They Occupied

May 2, 1745, the first deed conveys from John Buchanan, yeoman to David Cloyd yeoman, from Newcastle County, Pennsylvania, 400 acres, all that tract lying and being in Orange County called Augusta on the west side of the Blue Ridge west of the James River on the head of a branch of Goose Creek. - Orange County Deed Book 10, p. 33

From these early grants we learn that the main river of Roanoke was called Goose Creek, that its north branch now called Tinker Creek was called Buffalo Creek with its lower part designated Smith's Creek, and the south branch of Roanoke as later, called the South Fork of Roanoke. From later land records we learn that Captain George Robinson started the community by settling on a small tract of land, 191 acres, on a branch of Buffalo Creek where William Preston afterward established his home called Greenfield, adjoining the tract at the head of this branch which John Buchanan sold to David Cloyd. The Cloyd land and home place afterwards become the Withrow-Mitchell and Firebaugh place, and the upper part of the branch was called Turkey-cock Creek.

Franz Christian Werner md. Elisabethe Spengler/Spenglerin in July 8, 1798, Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.  They seem a good possibility.

Lived: Hesse-Darmstadt in 1807 long enough to have a child.  No evidence that he immigrated to U.S. In fact his daughter Katherine states in her divorce papers that she had no family in the U.S. She further stated that Jacob Erkmann was planning on going back to Germany and leaving her behind on her own.

1923 -  October 12 -  Black Mountain News (column) - John Barr has been helping Mr. Corliss with his hay the past week.  Most of the hay is still in the shock on account of the rains.

1923 - October 12 - Commissioner's Proceedings (column) - Oct. 2, 1923 The Board of County Commissioners of Park County, Colorado met in regular session at 8 o'clock AM October 2, 1923 for the transaction of any and all business that may properly come before them. . . . Biography: Odell. William, was perhaps a son of William Odell of Concord, Mass. (Savage.) If so, he came over at the age of five years in 1639 with his father, who settled in Fairfield. William Odell was one of the first settlers of Rye. He was with the Hastings planters in 1662, and continued here apparently until his death, which occurred between 1697 and 1700. He had land in the various divisions during his life. His house-lot, afterward John Brondige's, was about the northern part of Mr. J.E. Corning's garden. He married a daughter of Richard Vowles of Rye. Our records mention his sons John and Samuel. The latter is not mentioned by Mr. Bolton in the pedigree which he gives of William Odell's descendants (History of Westchester Co., Vol. II, p. 536); according to which, William had five sons, Stephen, John, Michael, Isaac and Jonathan. Perhaps the first name should read Samuel.
