In 1883 Joel was racing on horseback at night with some friends.  He was thrown off his horse and knocked out.  The newspaper reported that the doctor scolded him.

Sometime between 1881 and 1895 Joel followed his older brothers to Wayne County, Illinois.  He settled at the top of Scrub Hill and lived there the rest of his life. He visited his family in the Pasturefield community of Lawrence Co., in January of 1898.

1870 Petty Twp., Lawrence Co., IL census with his father, he was 10 years old, his mother died when he was 8

1880 Petty Twp., Lawrence Co., IL census with his younger brothers George & Grant and his sister Emma Anderson.  He was listed as a farmer age 22.

1900 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL census with is own family, he had been married 4 years and he was 40 years old.  He and Louisa had two children.  Louisa's sister Nettie Dove was living with them.

1910 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL census with his family, he was listed as a farmer of a general farm and was 50 years old. He was the father of seven children.

1920 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL census with his wife and eleven children, he was 59 years old.

1930 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL census with his wife and seven children, he was 70 years old.

1935 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL according to 1940 census.

1940 Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL census with his wife and three children, he was 80 years old.  His home was valued at $800

1941 - March 26 - Illinois, Wayne Co. - Joel gave the following deposition regarding land in Four Mile Township that eventually became Albert Lathrop's home place.

State of Illinois, County of Wayne

Joel Lathrop, being first duly sworn upon his oath, deposes and says: 

That he is 81 years of age and that he is a retired farmer and has been for more than 3 years, last past, and that for 44 years he has lived in the immediate neighborhood of the following described land situated in Wayne County, Illinois, to-wit: 

The South 50 acres of the West one-half (W1/2) of the Southeast quarter (SE1/4) and the Southeast quarter (SE1/4) of the Southwest quarter (SW1/4) of Section 35, Town 2 South, Range 5 East of the Third Principal Meridian.

That for at least 35 years last preceding the making of this affidavit, affiant has been familiar with the physical location and condition of the above described real estate with respect to improvements  thereon, and has known the person or persons in possession thereof; 

That he is aware of the statements set forth in the foregoing affidavit made by John Shelton, and knows of his own knowledge that the statements made therein concerning the title and possession of the above described land for the past 32 years are true and correct.
