p. 21 Hampshire County, Now, West Virginia, This division of the Old Dominion was first Spottsylvania County, 1720 to 1734, then Orange County, 1734 to 1738. In the year 1738 the portion of Orange County, Virginia, west of the Blue Ridge, was made into two counties, Augusta and Frederick, since there were already many settlements there. Frederick county embraced the lower, or northern part of Shenandoah Valley with Winchester as the county seat, and Augusta, the southern or pper, with Staunton as the county seat. This division embraced the whole Northwest Territory which extended to the Mississippi River and from this Hampshire, the oldest county in West Virginia, was chiefly formed in 1754, in pursuance of an Article passed by the General Assembly on December 13, 1753, and then included Hardy, Mineral, Grant counties, parts of Morgan and Pendleton, Hardy, being cut off from it in 1785, and Mineral soon after the Civil War, and Grant from that fourteen days later, 1866.
Hampshire is now a part of the Eastern Pan Handle of West Virginia. It contains 640 square miles and approximately 409,600 acres, drained in a north easterly direction by the Potomac and its tributaries, Capon and North rivers, Little Capon, and South Branch, named from east to west.
. . . It is adapted to agriculture and may be divided into three classes: first, smooth upland, suited to general farm crops, orchards and pasture. Second, river botom lands that are very productive, suited to corn, wheat, oats hay, potatoes and gardening. Third, mountain acres, more or less stony and too steep for cultivation, that are forested but some of this land is cleared and used for orchards or summer sheep pasture.
p. 22 These settlers were largely British people, Welsh, Scotch, Irish and English, and brought with them samples of the home comforts, as well as the brain and refinements of the homeland. They, being cut off from it by lack of roads and transportation, very soon set about making provision for their future needs by building mills, roads, tanneries, factories, ferries, forts, etc. . . .
p. 24 History speaks of a Robert Pugh, whose sons Joseph Edwards the builder of Fort Edwards, 1747 and 1748, the first Indian Fort in Wes Virginia, willed 400 acres on boths sides of Capon. This Robert married Joseph Edwards' daughter, Mary, and reared twelve children, several of whom were born in the 1750s and one of whom is the reputed founder of the Capon Bridge settlement.

Robert Edwards married Eva Hawkins and moved to North River where they bought one of the Deaver farms (1 mile north of the Ice Mountain farm) where they lived and raised a large family. Shortly after the Civil War, about 1867, they sold the farm to their son-in-law and daughter Peter and Jane Edwards Largent, and moved to; I think, Peoria, Ill., where they died and are buried. p. 252 Later research shows that Grandfather and Grandmorther Robert Edwards Sr. and Eva Edwards are buried at Lacross, Hancock Co., Ill., also their son Albert is buried there.
