Hough, Andrea. Filling in the Gaps: Using the Collections of the Indiana Division, Indiana State Library, Hoosier Genealogist, Vol. 41, Indianapolis, IN: Indiana Historical Society, 2001.

A distinct Indiana collection was part of the Indiana State Library as early as 1903, when an article in the Indianapolis Journal noted the 2,000 books in the Indiana General Assembly, formally established "The Division of Indiana History & Archives." which became known as the Indiana Division, 1913.  . . .

The Indiana Division does not replicate the holdings of the ISL Genealogy Division, therefore it does not maintain cemetery inscriptions, county records, or family histories. Nor does the Indiana Division duplicate the holdings of the Indiana State Archives (Commission on Public Records), which holds the official records of the state of Indiana. While its collections do not include materials specific to family history research, a wide variety of the Indiana Division's materials can be used for that purpose.

The strengths of the Indiana Division collections includes periodicals, newspapers, pamphlets, printed histories, directories, clipping files, manuscripts, state documents, and maps. The collection currently holds more than 120,000 printed volumes (books and pamphlets), nearly 80,000 reels of microfilmed newspapers, approximately 3,000,000 manuscript items, and almost 11,000 maps. . . .

One of the most important aspects of genealogical research is placing an ancestor in a given time and location. This can be done through a variety of methods such as using the Genealogy Division's census records or county records on microfilm. Another way is by using printed sources such as newspapers or city directories, as well as secondary sources such as county histories and atlases.  . . .

The Indiana Division contains the largest collection of Indiana newspapers in existence, dating from the first newspaper published in the state in 1804 through the latest editions of more than 150 city and county newspapers from throughout Indiana. At present the collection contains nearly 80,000 reels of microfilmed newspapers. . . . can be borrowed through interlibrary loan from any library in the country. . . .

Although an obituary can provide a wealth of information about an ancestor, newspapers vary in their coverage of the lives of the recently deceased. Small town newspapers have traditionally provided the best articles. However, since many of them are weekly papers, they omit many obituaries of deaths that are "old news" by the time they publish an issue. . . .

Many county-seat newspapers formerly published weekly or semiweekly news columns from outlying towns and villages. These columns provide information on illnesses, engagements, visitors, and various community events. . . .

The Indiana Division has extensive holdings of Indiana city and county directories that can be used to show that a person lived in a place at a particular time. . . .

County histories can be a good source of information about an ancestor. The Indiana Division has an extensive collection of county histories, which it has supplemented over the years with city, town, church, organizational, business, and other histories covering all aspects of Indiana. . . .

Nineteenth-century atlases and plat maps can also be used to show that a person was in a given place at a certain time. During the late 1800s, many atlases were published for counties in Indiana. In many cases atlases provide biographical information about residents who subscribed to the atlas, and they often show the holdings of rural landowners, too.  Plat maps, which were published from the 1920s but not collected heavily by the Indiana Division until the 1950s, also show rural landholdings. . . .

Since 1898, librarians at the Indiana State Library have maintained a variety of indexes to make information about Indiana people, places, and events more readily available. Indexes are used to track down information from sources otherwise difficult, if not impossible, to use.

Decades ago, librarians from the Indiana Division created the Indiana Biography Index. It provides citations to a variety of works with biographical information about people having Indiana connections. The index includes references to books, organizational meeting minutes, magazine articles and other sources. There are approximately 250,000 cards in the index . . . The ISL stopped creating entries to the card file in 1990, however, in 1998 ISL librarians restarted the Indiana Biography Index as an online database, working from sources published since 1990. At present over 35,000 entries exist in the online database. . . .

From 1898 to 1991, librarians at the ISL indexed the articles in major Indianapolis newspapers byname, subject and geographic area concerned.
