Avonelle Richardson obituary, 2/14/2013 - Avonelle E. Richardson, 94, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of Opdyke, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at White Oak Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born on Jan. 11, 1919 in Jefferson County, a daughter of Alva L. & Zota Ellen (Russell) Estes.
She is survived by two sons, Dennis M. Richardson and wife Pam of Mt. Vernon and Glen S. Richardson and wife Sara of Mt. Vernon; two daughters Karen Frederick and husband Randy of Macungie, Penn., and Deena Peterson and husband Dean of Woodlawn; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Harl & Wayne Estes; and two sisters, Lee Ellen Henderson & Evelyn Hottensen.
Avonelle was a homemaker, a member of Jefferson County Homemakers Extension, the Town & Country Homemakers Unit and Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Jimmy Bledsoe officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. . . .

Dennis Wins Press Football Contest, nd - Dennis Brandt of Fairfield won the $35 from last weekend's Wayne County Press football contest. He missed only two games, an effort that was tied by two other entrants. Dennis picked the winner in the Tie Breaker game. DuQuoin defeated Carmi/White County 19-14. Community of Christ Church Mother/Daughters Unite at Banquet, nd - The Community of Christ Church held its annual Mother/Daughter banquet Saturday, May 10 at 6 p.m. in their Family Life Center. The theme for the evening was "A Beautiful Woman in Christ" with beauty products used as decorations and door prizes. Joyce Caudle welcomed the women followed by a reading by gay Wright and a blessing on the meal by Lee Flechs. Seventy-eight guests enjoyed a delicious meal of smoked pork roast and fried chicken served with a variety of dishes. Following the meal, guest speaker Judith Puckett told of Pioneer Women in Wayne County. She was then presented with a plant and a Mother's Day book. . . . In attendance were . . . Deputies Recognized, nd - Four Wayne County sheriff's deputies have been recognized for "outstanding DUI enforcement efforts" by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, a Schaumberg, Ill., DUI awareness and education organization. Sheriff Sonny McCulley said the deputies recognized were Steve Colclasure, Don Atwood, mark Tipps and Chad Shreve. Each of the deputies was issued by the AAIM.
Burnt Prairie News, nd - On the evening of Thursday, Jan. 29, the Dale Colclasures got a phone call from their oldest son, Ed, saying that his wife, Rose was in a hospital. She was having terrible headaches and her brain was swelling and she couldn't see. On Friday morning she was in ICU and in a coma. She came out of the coma after 20 hours. The doctor told them that it would be a miracle if she made it through that weekend. A tumor was somewhere and sending lesions to the brain and it was very aggressive. On Monday, they did another CT scan. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth on Tuesday, had a biopsy of her lung on Wednesday. After having the biopsy, her lung started to collapse and a tube was put in. They put in a chest pump Thursday morning and she had her first radiation treatment Thursday afternoon. She had another radiation treatment Friday and the chest tube was removed. They were told that she could go home on Saturday if the lung stayed up. An x-ray showed that the hold had gotten bigger and it hadn't healed good, so the tube was put back in and the word is now that she may go home Monday or Tuesday (2/9 or 2/10). When she does go home, Ed will be taking her to Duluth for radiation, week days until she has had 10 treatments. They should end on the 18th of February. I asked her last night if she wanted me to mention her in the Burnt Prairie news. Her answer was "Yes and to Prayer Groups."
Tri-Annual Wheeler Family Reunion Held in Grayville, nd - Family members of the sons of the late Donald and Grace Wheeler of Fairfield gathered for their fifth tri-annual Wheeler Family Reunion on July 7 - 10 in Grayville. The sons, all deceased, were Bernard, Lowell & Robert G. Wheeler.
Kent & Doris Wheeler, Jim & Carolyn Funkhouser and Denise & Brad Schroeder all of Grayville served as hosts for the reunion festivities.
Representing the late Bernard & Evelyn Wheeler were Don & Betty Wheeler of Aldie, Va; Mike & Suzie Wheeler of Myrtle Beach, SC; Bernie & Cindy Wheeler of Dayton, OH; and Carl & Helen (Wheeler) Phillips of Greensboro, NC. During the reunion a special birthday celebration was held for twins Bernie & Helen.
Representing the late Lowell Wheeler & Vera Wheeler Funkhouser family were Kent & Doris Wheeler, children Brad & Denise (Wheeler) Schroeder, their children, Kayla & Marshall all of Grayville; Klay & Heather Wheeler and children Kale and Jake from Noble; Jim & Carolyn Funkhouser and daughter Brooke all of Grayville. Jim is the son of the late Willis Funkhouser & Vera Wheeler Funkhouser. The oldest son, Dick of Daytona Beach, Fla., was unable to attend.
Those attending from the family of the late Robert G. (Bob) Wheeler (former Postmaster of Mill Shoals) & Frieda (French) Wheeler of Goodlettsville, Tenn., were daughter Becky Garrison & husband Dr. David Garrison of St. Joseph, Mo, two of their daughters, Jennifer & Stacy Griggs and their daughter Anna of Bixby, Okla; Sara & Jeremy Schultz of Winston-Salem, NC. Daughter Suzanne & husband Michael Lowe of West Des Moines, Iowa were unable to attend, but were represented by their children Katherine & Matt. Also attending was son Rob Wheeler of Goodlettsville, Tenn. Rob divided his time between Carbondale and Grayville while his son Ben played in a baseball tournament. Also attending were Charles & Wanda French of Fairfield, Freida Wheeler's brother.
Trixie (Erkman) Lathrop & husband Bill of Wayne City also attended. Trixie is the daughter of the late Lonnie & Anna Wheeler.
The three-day reunion included visits to family cemeteries, family home sites in Fairfield and Mill Shoals, and touring/shopping in New Harmony, Ind. The reunion culminated with a catfish and fried chicken dinner, talent showcase and worship service at the Grayville First Christian Church on Saturday evening.Twenty Eight Schoolmates Meet; Enjoy Game of Trivia, 9/1999 - Wayne City High School's class of 1954 held its 45th year reunion September 4, 1999, at the Wayne City Community Building.
Twenty-eight class members plus several spouses attended.
Registration started at 4 p.m., followed with punch and snacks and much socializing.
At 6 p.m. Rev. Darrell Highsmith offered the blessing and a buffet meal, catered by Marla Heifner and her family of helpers, was served. Everyone enjoyed ham, fried chicken and all the trimmings, hot rolls, desserts and drinks.
For the after-dinner program, Mary A. Smith offered a reading of Class of 54 BC (Before Computers). Glen Feather asked a number of questions for a game of trivia. 1954 nostalgic coffee mugs were awarded to the top 5 point achievers. In addition to Glen's trivia questions, his wife, Shirley, had researched microfiche at a library to provide the class with three pages of Wayne City trivia for the year '54.
Marjorie Jelley & Verona Highsmith awarded the following prizes: a piggy bank to Louise Lowery for the most change (in pocket); a bottle of vitamins to Marjorie Jelley for the most recently married; a bottle of aspirins to Mary J. Bruce for the longest married; a screen door wall plaque to Laverne Peters for the door prize and a washer and dryer (hand towel pulled through a 3" washer) to Kerry Withrow for the grand prize.
Marilyn Green concluded the program by recognizing five deceased classmates. They were Lavern Smith, Audrey Lathrop, Allen Koker, Tommy Gross and Toby Vest. Marilyn lit five candles in their memory and gave some comments on each, then snuffed out the candlelights and concluded with a prayer.
Plans for a 50-year reunion in 2004 were discussed and research is being undertakne by classmates for the possibility of that reunion being held in Branson, Mo., for three or four days. Any classmate wishing to voice a comment on this idea could call Leon Barnard, Wayne City.
The class members responsible for planning this reunion were Charlotte Campbell, Marilyn Green, Marjorie Jelley, Mary Bruce, Mary Smith, Patsy Jackson and Verona Highsmith.

Five Siblings Reach 50 Years of Marriage, 2/14/2013 - Five children of the late Albert & Grace Lathrop of rural Wayne City reached 50 years of marriage when their youngest sister, Dot (Phil) Utley of Tifton, Georgia, celebrated their 50th anniversary in December 2012. Both Dot and Phil are battling cancer.
Their brother Bob (Doretta) Lathrop of Rock Falls celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2006; sisters Betty (Eshmal) Porter of St. Louis in 2005; Barbara (Bob) Bolton of Fairfield in 2004 and Bonnie (Ivan) Holler of Fairfield in 1999.Lathrops to Celebrate 60th Wedding Anniversary, 6/23, 2011 - Mr. & Mrs. Glen Lathrop of Fairfield will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Elder Harrolle Mayberry performed the ceremony at the minister's home at Wayne City. Witnesses were Hurshel and Delores Pennington of Wayne City.
Glen & Yvonne have three children: Cheryl (Steve) Hammil, Rich (Beth) Lathrop of Indianapolis, Ind., and Anita Morris of Fairfield. They also ahve four grandchildren, Gretchen (Jon) Smeltzer, Englewood, Ind., Jason (Lyndsy) Hammil, Louisville, Ky., Landon and Kelsey Morris of Fairfield.

Mr. & Mrs. Gurley were presented with a magazine rack for their new home.

Wayne City Friends Help Lyman Gurley, ca. 1951 - A group of neighbors yesterday descended on the Lyman Gurley farm west of Wayne City and helped plant 2,500 pine trees.
These were planted on a little more than two acres of land that badly needed some erosion control practice. The work took three to four hours. The trees will bring the erosion problem under control.
Ultimately the trees can be converted into fence posts that will have considerable value.
Mrs. Gurley is in a St. Louis hospital recovering from major surgery. A carload of Wayne City area residents drove to St. Louis to donate blood for her at the time of the operation. Mr. Gurley was in St. Louis with his wife when friends planted the trees.
"They just thought it would be a nice thing if he'd find the trees planted when the Gurleys return," Dwight Esarey, farm planner said.
