Religion: probably a Baptist, his daughters married by John Monroe a Baptist minister. Hamilton Parish created in 1730 has served Stafford, Prince William and Fauquier Counties.  Elk Run Church and Turkey Run Church fell within the bounds of this parish.  No early parish registers have survived. Leeds Parish was created out of a part of Hamilton Parish in 1769, no early parish registers have survived.

Records:

1759 - Fauquier County formed from Prince William County.  It is likely that the Morehead family lived in the western part of Prince William County which became Fauquier and did not move into the new county.

1764 - March 2 - John sells 124 acres in Hamilton Parish that had belonged to his father to Samuel Morehead.



1764 - March 22 - Indenture between John Morehead of Fauquier County and his son John Morehead, land where said John, Sr. now lives containing 12 acres.

1768 - Aug. 2 - Bill of sale. John Jett for £27 to John Morehead . . . negro girl named Sarah. Signed John Jett. Wit: William Primm, Samuel Morehead, William Morehead. Rec: 24 Oct. 1768 acknowledged by John Jett.  May be John Morehead Sr., but not designated as such.

1768 - Oct. 25 - John wit: bond of William Wheatley to John Wheatley.

1770 - Oct. 11 - Bill of sale. David Barton of Leeds Parish to John Morehead . . . £10 . . . all household furniture.  Signed David Barton. Wit: John Moffett, Peter Lawrance. Rec. 24 June 1771.

1773 - May 25 - Conveyance between Joseph Morehead of Halifax County, to Charles & John Morehead of Fauquier of one negro.

1773 - Sept. 23 - Bill of sale. Charles Waller to John Morehead for £19.13s.10d.1f . . . furniture, horse, cattle, slaves, whole crop of corn and tobacco . . . Signed Charles (C) Waller.  Wits: Bailey Johnson, Thomas Massey. Rec. 25 April 1774 proved by oath of witnesses.

1776 - May - John Morehead, Charles Smith, William Wheatley and John Smith to take inventory of estate of John Sinkler [Sinclair] deceased. 

1776 - May 25 - Lease & release between John Morehead of Leeds Parish & Mary his wife and Samuel Morehead of Hamilton Parish, tract in Hamilton Parish, part of a tract by deed of gift of John Morehead, father of aforesaid, John Morehead 2 March 1764, 124 acres £27

1778 - July 27 - John Southard, Peter Laurance, Edward Hughes and John Morehead or any 3 of them, appointed to appraise the estate of James Hamrick, deceased.

1778 - Aug. 24 - John Morehead plaintiff against John Bolt, defendant. By consent of the Parties all matters in difference between them relative to this suit is referred to the determination of Peter Lawrence.

1779 - April 10 - John Morehead plaintiff vs. John Adams defendant in chancery. 
The Commonwealth of Virginia to the Sheriff of Fauquier County Greeting you are Commanded to summon John Adams to appear before the Justices of the said County Court at the Courthouse on the fourth Monday in this Month to answer a Bill in Chancery exhibited against him by John Morehad and this he shall in no wise omit under the Penalty of £100. And have then there this Writ Witness Humphrey Brooke, clerk of the said court at the Courthouse the 10th day of April 1779.  H. Brooke.
1779 - April 26 - John Morehead vs. John Adams - referred to the determination of William Ellzey, Cuthbert Bullitt and Humphrey Brooke . . . their award to be the decree of the court. 

1779 - April 26 - John Morehead plaintiff vs. Robert Bolt, defendant discontinued. 

1779 - July 27 - John Morehead plaintiff vs. Lydia Watts defendant, on a petition.  Petition abates on defendant's death.

1779 - Aug. 24 - John Morehead served on jury in the replevin case Joseph Neal plaintiff vs. Jeremiah Darnall, gentleman, defendant.

1779 - Aug. 25 - John Morehead vs. Thomas Brown, in case in Fauquier County.

1782 - May 28 - Fauquier County Court
  • To Robert Sinkler (possible son-in-law) for six wolves head, 300 lbs. tobacco
  • John Morehead for six ditto, 300 lbs. tobacco.
1782 - Sep. 24 - Fauquier County Court - John Morehead plaintiff against Bailey Johnson defendant in case, discontinued. 

1791 - Oct. 27 - Fauquier Sct.
John Morehead came before me and made oath that he considers Richard Rixey, Thomas Massie, William Simpson, John Moffett, Jesse Obannon, Matthew Neale & Martin Pucket ^John Dearing, John Morehed & Ricahrd Fisher & wife, Charles Atwell to be very material witnesses in a suit in chancery brought by him agt. James Dennison & the clerk is requested to issue a dedimus accordingly. Given under my hand this 27th day of October 1791.

1819 - June 14 - John wrote his will:
In the name of God Amen, I John Morehead Sen’r. of the County of Fauquier and state of Virginia being low of body but of sound mind being mindfull of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make this my last will and testament in manner & form following after recommending to almighty God trusting to the merits of my blessed redeemer Jesus Christ I do dispose of my worldly as follows.  I give unto my son John Morehead the land that he now lives on and the negroes he has in his possession, also I give to my son George Morehead the lease of land lying on the blue ridge and all the negroes he has in his possession also I give to my son Armistead Morehead all the negroes he has in his possession, also I give to my son William Morehead’s children all the negroes he had in his possession I have give to my son Charles Morehead all the negroes that I intended, also I give to my son James Morehead all of the household and kitchen furniture, also I give to my daughter Sarah Sinkler [Sinclair] all the negroes  she has in possession, also I give to my daughter Betsy Triplett all the negroes she has in possession, also I give to my daughter Susannah Triplett all the negroes they have in their possession and the money that the said John Triplett borrowed of me, also I give to daughter Nancy Dearing all the negroes that they have in their possession, also I give to my daughter Lucy Humston all the negroes they have in their possession and after I am dead every piece of property that is not mentioned in this will and the deed that I have made to my son James Morehead to be sold and equally divided among my children by my son James Morehead, lastly I nominate, constitute and appoint my son George Morehead and Matthew Neale executors to this my last will and testament and revoking all former will and wills by me made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14 day of June 1819, signed, sealed and acknowledged in the presence of John Morehead (seal).

1821 - January 22 - At a court held for Fauquier County on the 22nd day of January 1821.  This last will and testament of John Morehead, was proved by the oath of Matthew Neale and John Herringdon (the said Neale having first renounced the executorship of the said will) witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
