Ahnentafel #180 - James Clark

James Clark

Born: 1745
Died: September 23, 1794

Buried: Scotch Plains Baptist Church, Scotch Plains, New Jersey

Married: ca. 1767 Esther Marsh in New Jersey

Occupation: Carpenter

Military:  served in the Continental Army in the American Revolution obtaining the rank of lieutenant.

1775 - Sept 14 - New York, Goshen, Orange Co. - James Clark listed as Lieutenant in Capt. Daniel Rozencarn's Wantage Company of Col. John Hathorn's Regiment.

1776 - Jan. 8 - James Clark appointed 2nd Lieutenenant

1776 - Oct 7 - James Clark listed as 2nd Lieutenant in 1st Regiment of New York Continental Army under Col. Goose Van Schaick

1776, Dec. 17 - New York, Saratoga - Muster Roll of Field Staff and other Commissioned Officers. Colonel Goose Van Schaick's Battalion of Forces raised in the State of New York and now in the Service of the United States of America. - 1st Company - Appointed Jan. 8, 1776 - James Clark - 2nd Lieutenant

1779 - April - 1st Regiment New York Continentals - raid on Onondagas  - Col. Goose Van Schaick led about 550 men from Fort Stanwix, NY through Onondaga territory over 180 miles for 5 days and considerably disabled the Indians from causing trouble. They captured 37 prisoners, 100 muskets without loss of American lives.  Unclear at the moment if James was a member of one of the three companies involved in the raid.

1781 - Virginia - Yorktown - Daniel Carpenter in letter to E.S. Clark, Oct. 20, 1913 stated:
Grandfather Samuel Clark was in hearing of the bombardment of Yorktown, Va. when Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington and closed the Revolutionary War.

Upon checking dates, I believe that he may have actually meant James Clark aged 36 in 1781.  His son Samuel Clark would have only been 13 years of age during the siege of Yorktown.  There is no evidence that Samuel Clark served in any capacity during the American Revolution.
