Rappahannock River

The Rappahannock River is the southern border of the northern neck where several families settled in the 1600s.  The Potomoc River defines the northern border of the neck. The neck at the Chesapeake Bay is about 20 miles across.  Over two or three generations these families migrated upriver before crossing the mountains into Kentucky.


Morgan Family:
I. Anthony living in Old Rappahannock County in 1665 which was on the north side of the river.  He was born in Bristol, England and married a woman named Elizabeth in Virginia.  They had five children.  Anthony died ca. 1689.

II. Charles Morgan b. 1680 Old Rappahannock County married a woman named Ann and had eight children.  He owned land in King George Co. in the 1720s, Prince William Co. in 1758 which became Fauquier Co. where he died in 1766.

III. William Morgan born ca. 1730  he married 1) Mary Duncan and 2) Elizabeth ? he had a total of 14 children.  He owned 325 in Culpeper Co., VA in 1747 and 400 acres in Prince William Co. in 1750.  His daughter Phoebe Morgan was born in Fauquier Co. in 1751 and it's probable that several of his other children were born there as well.  William purchased land in Middlesex Co. which is on the south side of the river on the middle neck.  William was a land speculator who continued to buy and sell land westward into Lincoln Co. which became part of Kentucky in 1792.  William died there in 1797.

Baldridge Family:
James Baldridge born 1610 in London, England, married Dorothy Cooke in Virginia.  They lived in Westmoreland County where James died in 1658.

Overall Family: 
I. William Overall born 1655 married Jane Baldridge daughter of James & Dorothy (Cooke) Baldridge.  

II. William Overall born in Virginia ca. 1682 married Mary Jones ca. 1700.  Mary was the daughter of John & Anne (?) Jones.  William died in 1726.

III. John Overall born 1701 married 1722 Mary Ellis in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County.  Mary died in 1738 and John in 1743.

IV. Mary Overall born 1731 married John Tipton Hunt Sr. ca. 1721 in Frederick County.  They had ten children and moved up the Shenandoah Valley through the Cumberland Gap and into what would become Fleming Co. Kentucky in the 1770s.  

Jones Family:
Nathaniel ? Jones married Judith (?) and had son John in Westmoreland County.  John 
married Anne ? and had daughter Mary who married William Overall above.

Beasley Family:
I. William Beasley born ca. 1632 Henley, England the son of William & Joyce (Peacocke) Beasley.  He arrived in Virginia in 1649 on the Honor and lived in Essex County on the south side of the Rappahannock.  He married Martha Ripley and they had six children. William died in 1719.

II. Benjamin Beasley born ca. 1670 in Essex County married a woman named Elizabeth.  They had at least one son.  Benjamin died in 1757.

III. John Beasley born ca. 1695 in Essex County married a woman named Mary and they had four children.  They were living in Caroline County in 1733 where John served as a road supervisor.  John died in Essex County in 1759.

IV. Richard Beasley born 1736 in Caroline County married Martha Cook in 1754.  Martha was the daughter of Robert & Mary Cook.  They had twelve children.  Several of their children were born in King & Queen County.  The family moved south to Surry County, NC ca. 1785.

Doggett Family
I. Benjamin Doggett baptized 1636 in Ipswich, England married a woman named Jane in 1664 in England was living in Lancaster Co. VA by 1670.  He served as minister of St. Mary's White Chapel and died in Lancaster Co. in 1682.

II. Richard Doggett born ca. 1670 in Lancaster Co., VA married Elizabeth Bushrod ca. 1702. She was the daughter of Richard & Apphia (?) Bushrod.  They had three children.  Richard died in 1721 and Elizabeth after 1738.

III. Bushrod Doggett born ca. 1707 married Anne Stribling in King George County in 1737 and they had eight children. She was the daughter of Joel & Mary Stribling. He is living in Fauquier Co. in 1764.  Bushrod died in Culpeper Co., VA in 1791.  Anne died in 1793.

Morehead Family:
I. Charles Morehead born ca. 1609 in London immigrated to Virginia in 1645.  He married Mary Nelms and they had eight children.  Mary was the daughter of Richard & Ann Nelms.  Charles settled in Northumberland County, VA and died there in 1705.

II. John Morehead born ca. 1687 in Northumberland County and married a woman named Mary.  They had ten children.  The family moved upriver to King George County in 1726 and John received a grant of land in Prince William County which became Fauquier County.  John died in Fauquier County in 1768.

III. John Morehead born ca. 1747 in Prince William County married a woman named Mary and they had eleven children.  John died in Fauquier County ca. 1820.
