1631 Samuel Denton in Halifax, England son of Richard Denton.  Samuel immigrated to America ca. 1650.  He married Mary Rock Smith in Hempstead, NY 1656. She was born 1640 in Dorchester, MA the daughter of John Rock & Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Smith.  They had at least one son.  Samuel and Mary died within five days of each other in 1713 in Hempstead.  The Rock Smith family used the name to distinguish themselves from several other Smith families of the Long Island area.

Battle:

1568 James Morehead fought in the Battle of Langside against the King and Regent for Mary, Queen of Scots.  300 or so men were killed in about 45 minutes of battle.  James was the brother-in-law of Sir James Hamilton who was main supporter of the Queen.

Ruby Shelton

Just heard the news that Ruby Shelton passed away last night.  She was the last living child of Joel & Louisa (Dove) Lathrop's 11 children.  Ruby, born May 5, 1917 grew up on Scrub Hill and when she married Howard Shelton Jan. 5, 1935 at age 17 she moved to the bottom of the Hill.  She and Howard had three children:  Harold born & died March 2, 1936,  Marilyn born Aug. 11, 1944, died Feb. 5, 2008 and Ronnie who survives.  Howard passed away on Christmas Day 2004.  For the last several years Ruby has been living in a nursing home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.  She was 96 years old.

I'll post the obituary here when it comes out, probably tomorrow.  If anyone wants to share photos, I'll post those as well.

Ruby M. Shelton, 96, of Wayne City, died 11 p.m. May 14, 2014 at Mt. Vernon Health Care.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Shelton was born May 5, 1917 in Wayne City, the daughter of Joe and "Lula" Dove Lathrop.  She married Howard Shelton; he preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Ron (Carol) Shelton of Wayne City; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, an infant son, a grandson and 10 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church in Wayne City with the Rev. Karen Blank Ewell officiating.  Burial will be in Farnsworth Cemetery in Wayne City.
