1871 Mary (Colclasure) McGrew age 84 in Clay Co., IL the daughter of Jacob & Elinor (Dennen) Colclasure.  She was born in Washington Co., IN in 1786 and married James McGrew in Henry Co., KY and they had nine children.  Mary is buried In Camp Ground Cemetery in Xenia, IL.

1940 John Brooks age 73 in Clay Co., IL.  Born in Clay Co., IL in 1867 he married Fanny Bryan, sister of Edward below.  John is buried in Ingraham Cemetery in Ingraham, IL.

1956 Edward Bryan the son of Wesley & Catherine (Smith) was born in Clay Co., IL in 1877 and married Jessie McKnight in 1903.  He was 78 years old.

Albert Lathrop
1971 Albert Lathrop, 64, well-known Wayne City resident, died at 8:25 a.m. Sunday at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville from a complication of severe diabetes, ulcers and internal bleeding.  He was a school teacher for 44 years and also had engaged in farming.

1879 Alice (Powell) Gross in Richford, VT.  The daughter of Jay & Esther (Smith) Powell, she was 28 years old.  She was born in Vermont in 1850 and married James Gross in 1871.  Alice is buried in the Troy Street Cemetery in Richford, VT.



1901 Arthur Kallenbach the son of Samuel & Susan (Erkman) Kallenbach was born Sep. 11, 1900.  He is buried in St. John’s Cemetery in White Co., IL.

1558 Robert Lowthroppe b. ca. 1513 in Cherry Burton, Yorkshire, England son of John & Margaret (Wade) Lowthroppe made his will at age 45 on July 16th.  It went into probate on Oct. 20, 1558 in York, England.
1. To ye blessed sacrament of ye altar for forgotten tythes, v s.
2. To poor people at his burial, 4 marks, by executors. [mark is "money of account" worth 2/3 of a pound]
3. To ye church of "Sheriburton," 6s, 8d.
4. To son John all lands and tenements in So. Dalton and all freehold lands and titles; the lands in Burton purchased of Richard Fenle and Marmaduke Whytinge; and in default of issue from him, the reversion of the foregoing to be unto son Lawrence and his heirs.
5. To son Thomas all lands and their appurtenances in Walkinton.

In Memoriam July 15th


1912 Elizabeth (Jones) Colclasure age 56, she was born in Indiana in 1855.  She married John Colclasure in 1880.  Elizabeth is buried in Oak Mound Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.

1966 Mrs. Irene Legg, 53 died at 10:20 a.m. today at her home in Sims, after a long illness.
The body was taken to the Richardson Chapel in Wayne City.  Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Mrs. Legg is survived by her husband, Herschel; her mother Mrs. Reba Thomason of Sims, and one daughter Joy, of Sims.
Funeral Monday for Mrs. Legg
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Missionary Baptist church in Sims for Mrs. Irene Legg, 53.
Mrs. Legg died yesterday at her home.
The Rev. H.H. Mayberry will officiate at services.
Friends may call at the Richardson Chapel in Wayne City after 6:30 p.m. Sunday.  Burial will be at the Thomason cemetery.
Survivors include:
Her husband Herschel; her step mother Reba Thomason of Sims; and a daughter, Joy Hargreaves of Sims.
1990 Mrs. Kenneth E. (Gladys) Talbert, 82, of Fairfield, died at 1 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 1990 at Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was hospitalized last year and had been in declining health since that time.
Funeral services will be conducted from Nale’s Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with Elder Russell Blackford officiating.  Interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery.  Visitation at Nale’s will be from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening.
Gladys, daughter of William and Lucinda Galaspie Daniels, was born in Wayne County Feb. 27, 1908.
She was first married to Everett Morris, who preceded her in death.
On Dec. 25, 1942, she was married to Kenneth E. Talbert.
Mrs. Talbert was a member of the RLDS church and was very active in the Inez Rebekah Lodge here.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Gene Talbert of St. Joseph, Mich.; two daughters Rosalie Carter and Lora Chloe Schaffer, both of Fairfield; one brother, Elbert Daniels, St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Chloe Green, Fairfield; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.


2006 Marilyn (Murphy) Erkman age 71 in Swansea, IL.  She was the daughter of Albert & Katherine (Ferree) Murphy and born in Terre Haute, IN in 1935.  Marilyn married Edward Erkman and they had at least two children:  Kathy and Matt. She is buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, IN.

1948 Alice (Martindale) Withrow born in 1897, she was 51 years old. In 1911 Alice married Elmer Withrow and they had thirteen children: Gussie, Gordon, Phema, Clemmie, Lillian, Lloyd, Boyd, Joy, Mary , George, Shirley, Winfod and Dorothy.  Alice is buried in Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO.

2012 Glenn Eugene Richardson 85 of Bluford died 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Thursday June 23, 1927 in Middleton, son of Earl and Grace (Shaw) Richardson.  He married Betty J. Robertson on Dec. 26, 1947 in Mt. Vernon.

1854 Susan (Hinkle) Speer age 41 in Oldham Co., KY the daughter of Charles & Susannah (March) Hinkle.  She was born in 1813 and married Marquis D. Speer in 1836.  They had seven children:  John, Charles, Mary, Sarah, Columbus, infant son and Francis.  She is buried in the family cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.


1937 Selestine (Gentle) Green daughter of John & Mary (Parrish) Gentle in Jefferson Co., IL age 80.  She was born in Illinois in 1856 and married Enoch Green in 1880.  They had six children: Nellie, Clara, Roy, Lova, Bennie and Georgia.  She is buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Jefferson Co., IL.



1976 Marshall Hall age 59 in Jefferson Co., IL.  He was born in 1917 and married Opal Erkman in 1943.  They had two children:  Kay and Kenneth.  Marshall is buried in Garrison Cemetery in Hamilton Co., IL.

1975 Dempy Lathrop, 88, of Sumner Rt. 2, passed away at 11 p.m. Friday at Richland Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Sumner, Lawrence County, Jan. 23, 1887.
Mr. Lathrop farmed in Lawrence County all his life until his retirement.  He was a lifelong member of the Prairie Chapel Church north of Sumner.
In 1910, he married Leafa Hutchinson.
Surviving are his wife, Leafa, two sons, Gail Lathrop of Olney and Wendel Lathrop of Charleston; daughter Mrs. Audrey McElroy of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Veva Wagner of Sumner.
Mr. Lathrop was preceded in death by a sister and six brothers.

2003 Ida (Robertson) Clardy age 88 in Hanford, CA the daughter of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson.  She was born Grand Valley in 1914 and married John Clardy in 1935.  They have two children: Daniel and David. Ida is buried at the Campo Santo Columbarium in Oakhurst, CA.

1882 Elvira (Powell) Hopkins died age 47 y, 11 m, 5 d in Enosburg, VT of pulmonary disease July 9, 1882.  Born in Richford, VT the daughter of Jay & Esther (?) Powell.

1679 Thomas Bascom wrote his will:
Thomas Bascom Sen’r. of Northampton bequeathed to my son Thomas all my lands of all sorts together with my house, orchard & barn, also my cartwheels, plough, chains & all other husbandry implements & mason tools and other moveables; to my son[-in-law] William Janes . . . my cloth suit; to my son Robert Lymon my serge coat; residue to be divided equally between my children, viz: my son Thomas Bascom, Hannah Janes & Hephzibah Limon; my son Thomas Abascom to be executor and my well beloved & trusty friends Deacon William Holton & Deacon Medad Pumry to be overseers.
Thomas Bascom died May 9, 1682 in Northampton, MA.

2008 Leslie Runyon Jr. age 82 son of Leslie & Ellen (Abbott) Runyon in Kentucky.  He was born in Jefferson Co., KY in 1926 and is buried in Floydsburg Cemetery in Oldham Co., KY.

In Memoriam July 7th

1996 John Wesley Fitzgerald, 90, of Fairfield, died at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., at 8:19 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996.
He was a retired Fairfield city electric department employee.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon (today) from the Johnson Funeral Home, with Rev. Lawrence Ward officiating.  Burial was in the Koontz Cemetery here.  A visitation was held Sunday evening at the Johnson Chapel.
He was born at Iola Apr. 1, 1906, the son of Wakefield [sic] and Adeline Wilson Fitzgerald.

1887 George Lathrop, prominent farmer of Claremont township was killed in a farm accident.  He was born in 1854 in Richland Co., IL the son of Henry & Rachel (Laws) Lathrop.  George married Roelia Hostetler in 1878 and they had two children: William and Ida. 

1888 Charles Irwin age 1 son of Corbin & Charlotte (Lathrop) Irwin in Wayne Co., IL.  He was born there in Jan. 1887.


1895 John Gurley age 73 in Illinois.  John was born in 1821 in NC the son of William & Polly (?) Gurley.  He married Martha ca. 1848 in Illinois and they had at least five children: Mary, George, John, Francis and Edward.  John is buried in Masonic Cemetery
 in Metropolis, IL.

1740 Joseph Lathrop son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop in Norwich, CT.  Born in Norwich in 1661 he was 78 years old.  Joseph married 1) Mary Scudder 1686, 2) Elizabeth Waterhouse 1697 and 3) Martha in 1727. 


1953 Alberta (Speer) McAllister age 75 in Kellyville, OK.  She was born in Floydsburg, KY in 1878 the daughter of Charles & Anna (Runyon) Speer.  She married James McAllister ca. 1900 in Kentucky and they had at least seven children: Clarence, Earnest, Vertna, Mary, Elnora, Charles and Leonard.  The family moved to Oklahoma ca. 1905.  Alberta is buried in Sunrise Cemetery in Kellyville, OK.

1920 John Holler age 31 the son of Willis & Martha (Spry) Holler.  He was born in Indiana in 1889.

1953 Fanny (Bryan) Brooks daughter of Wesley & Catherine (Smith) Bryan in Clay Co., IL, she was 77.  Fanny was born in Clay Co. in 1875 and married John Brooks there in 1893.  Fanny is buried in Ingraham Cemetery in Ingraham, IL.



1941 James R. Gurley, a highly respected citizen of this community passed away at his home Friday, July 4th at 11 o’clock.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Musteen of Kansas City and Mrs. Edna Erkman of Evansville, and two sons, Elston and Lyman of this city.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G.W. Kelly at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Interment at Thomason Cemetery.

1977 Sophia (Erkman) Jordan age 91 in Evansville, IN.  She was born in White Co., IL in 1885 to Jacob & Fredericka (Probst) Erkman.  Sophia married Ernest Jordan in 1906 and they had one child: Freda.  Ernest and Sophia were divorced in 1930.  She lived in Evansville most of her life and worked at the LST plant during World War II.  Sophia is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, IN.

1922 Charles Speer age 78 in Kellyville, OK.  Born in Kentucky in 1843 to Marquis & Susan (Hinkle) Speer, Charles married 1) Sarah Head ca. 1863 and had a daughter who died at birth or shortly after.  2) Anna Runyon in 1865 and they had: Lou, James, Ella, Daisy, Maurice, Lida, Alberta, William, Weaver, Roger and Luther.  He and Anna divorced and Charles moved to Oklahoma.  He is buried in Sunrise Cemetery in Kellyville, OK.

1934 Ruth Hampton age 28 in Louisville, KY.  The daughter of Marcus & Margaret (Speer) Hampton, she was born in Oldham Co., KY in 1905.
