In Memoriam April 15th

1754 Moses Loomis son of Nathaniel & Elizabeth (More) Loomis age 82.  He was born in Windsor, CT in 1671 and married Joanna Gibbs in 1694. He is buried in Palisado Cemetery, Windsor, CT.

1893 Shelby Cornwell Sr. died in Orange Co., IN at age 82.  The son of John & Mary (Wolfe) Cornwell, he was born in Jefferson Co., KY in 1810 but grew up in Orange Co., IN from the age of 3.  Shelby married Mary Cornwell in 1853 and they had fifteen children: Jacob, Shelby, Mary, Clarence, Harriett, Luella, Thurston, Patterson, Polk, Scott, Herman, Charles, Peter, Henry and Elizabeth.  Shelby is buried in Stamper Creek Cemetery in Orange Co., IN.
 
1954 Malcolm Lathrop, 44, a native of Sumner, died early Thursday at his home in Onarga following an extended illness. 
A former employee of the Sumner Bank, appointed a sthe youngest Postmaster at Sumner in 1932, he went to Olney in the late 1930's and operated the Maytag agency for several years, leaving to become a federal bank examiner.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Hazel Henry Lathrop; a son Harold of Normal, Ill., and two daughters, Sandra and Sharon at home; his mother, Mrs. Lena Lathrop of Sumner and two sisters Mrs. Wanda Laughlin of Sumner and Miss Melbourne Lathrop of Lincoln. Funeral services were conducted at the Onarga Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday.  The body was brought to the Sumner cemetery for burial.

Harold Malcolm Lathrop, son of Orson and Lena Steward Lathrop was born September 28, 1909 in Sumner.  He received his education in the public schools and as a very young man became postmaster of his home community and at the same time developed an interest in banking. He learned the banking business in the hard school of experience but did it so thoroughly that he became a bank examiner for the State of Illinois in the early forties.  It was during his service with the state that he became acquainted with Onarga and the Onarga State Bank.  His ability as an examiner attracted the local bank and they offered him the position of cashier early in 1948. Mr. Lathrop moved to Onarga soon after accepting this position and in a short time became a guiding hand in the activities of the community.  He was a member of the Methodist Church.  Masonic Lodge, Lion's Club and Chamber of Commerce.  He was one of the organizers of the latter group and served as the first secretary.  Mr. Lathrop also served a term on the high school board, helped promote the lighted football field at the park and gave of his time and energy in everything that was for the good of the community.  Even after illness overtook him a year ago, he kept at his various activities until almost the end of the year. His marriage was to Hazel Henry at Sumner on June 2, 1929.  She survives him together with one son Harold Lathrop of Elgin and two daughters Sandra and Sharon at home.  Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Orson Lathrop of Sumner, a sister Mrs. Rex Laughlin of Sumner and Melbourn Lathrop of Lincoln, Illinois. Following the services at the Methodist Church in Onarga Saturday morning, April 17, at ten o'clock. Rev. Orval L. Bear officiated at the last rights, the body was removed to Sumner for interment.  Graveside services were held there at three o'clock Saturday afternoon.  Mrs. W.A. Nicholds was at the organ for the services in Onarga.
1979 Mrs. Daisy Lathrop, 95-year-old Lawrence County native, died in Olney Care Center, Olney, about 6:25 p.m. Sunday.
She was born Aug. 27, 1883, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Abraham Lincoln and Mary M. Lewis Caudle.  In March 1907 she was married to Mont Lathrop, who died in January 1945.
 She is survived by two sons, Frank Lathrop of Noble and Maurice Lathrop of Indianapolis, Ind.; four daughters Mrs. Helen Coen of Olney, Mrs. Paul (Sylva) Dix and Mrs. C.A. (Opal) Moguin, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Loraine Kraus of Bloomfield, Ind.; 31 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, one brother and three sisters. Mrs. Lathrop was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Funeral rites will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from Memorial Chapel at Summers Funeral Home in Olney with the Rev. Philip Gardner officiating.  Interment will follow in Haven Hill Cemetery.
1988 Helen (Robertson) Kiley age 71 in San Bruno, CA.  She was the daughter of Amos & Lula (Cravens) Robertson born 1916 in Grand Valley, CO.  Helen married William Kiley in 1936 in California and they had three children: Thomas, Lynnda and John.
