Blandwood

Blandwood was the home of North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead.  John the son of John & Obedience (Motley) Morehead was born July 4, 1796 in Pittsylvania County, VA.  The family moved to Rockingham County, NC in 1798.  John attended UNC Chapel Hill and graduated in 1817. He served as governor from 1841 to 1845.  Morehead purchased Blandwood in the 1840s and had it redesigned and expanded by architect Alexander Davis. After a failed peace conference in 1861 John served in the Confederate Congress.  He died at Rockbridge Springs, VA August 27, 1866.  He and his wife are buried at the Old First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.

Blandwood is considered to be the oldest example of Italianate architecture in the U.S.  Once part of a farm, the house is now in Greensboro, NC and is open to the public as a museum.
