1914 Joseph A. Maier, Old Soldier and Pioneer of Carmi Summoned After Short Illness
The death of Rev. Joseph A. Maier, one of Carmi’s most highly esteemed old citizens occurred at his home on South Church street Saturday morning, September 26th.  He had been in poor health for a number of years, but was not considered dangerously ill until a few days before his death.  He was 77 years, 11 months and 3 days of age when called away.
The death of Mr. Maier marked the closing of a long and useful life.  He was a man liked by everyone who knew him and was a most worthy citizen.  He will be greatly missed by his many friends throughout the county.
Joseph Anton Maier was born in Obermarchtal, Germany, October 23, 1836, and came to this country at the age of eighteen.  When quite a young man he enlisted on the Union side in the civil war and was a member of the 87th Illinois Regiment, Company “F.”  He saw valiant service throughout the terrible war and never at any time shirked his duty.  He professed faith in the Lord before gaining his majority and was a true and faithful Christian throughout his entire life.
On the 7th day of August 1865 he was united in marriage to Clara Erkman.  This marriage was blessed with four children, one of whom, Ruben, together with the sorrowing widow, survive.
Soon after his marriage he entered the ministry of the Southern Indiana Conference of the Evangelical Association and served the following fields:  Montgomery, Ind., Circuit, two years, Vandalia Circuit, 2 years, Evansville, Mt. Carmel, Ill., 2 years and Cincinnati, Ohio, 1 ½ years.  After 11 ½ years of service in the ministry he located at Carmi, Illinois where his closing years have been spent.
Mr. Maier was a gentleman of profound intellect and could converse on many subjects.  He delighted to talk of his adventures during the civil war and at different times contributed stories of his exploits to the county newspapers.  His articles, like his speech were highly interesting and were enjoyed by many.
When the summons appeared imminent he showed a willingness to meet his Maker and was resigned to the Will of God.
Besides the widow and son four grandchildren, and two sisters survive to mourn their loss.
Funeral services were held at the residence at one o’clock Monday afternoon and at the Evangelical church at two o’clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. G.A. Stierle, assisted by Rev. Martin Speck, of Anna and Rev. J.W. Feller, of Grayville.  Interment at Maple Ridge cemetery.

Elston, Hockers & Weavers Oh My!

I was very intrigued by the entry for Manderville Elston Hocker as Michael Young and a Mandeville Elston appear on deeds together.

Elston, Hocker, Newton and Weaver have been used in the Speer / Runyon family:
  • Julia Ann Elston (Young) Pearce
  • Fannie Elston (Runyon) Gurley
  • Weaver Hocker Speer
  • Elston Gurley
  • Michael Newton Runyon
but I had not been able to make the connection until now.

Michael Young b. 4 Apr. 1800, d. 4 Jan. 1877 Shelby Co., KY married 1) Emily ca. 1826 and 2) Susan Dawson 1835.  Emily was born ca. 1805 and died ca. 1834.  She and Michael had three children: Nancy Louisa, Julia Ann Elston and William Nathan who were raised by his second wife Susan.

Through the years we have searched for an Elston and Mandeville connection, but could not find one.  I've been told that Emily was a Walker, but could not prove that either.  With the record of Manderville Elston Hocker I began to search for Hockers and found the following information regarding Emily which is given in ahnentafel style.

1st Kentucky Cavalry, CSA

Members of Company E of Oldham & Shelby Counties and with probable connections to Speer family from Ed Thompson's History of the Orphan Brigade published in 1898.

Augustus M. Head, Oldham Co. was in all the engagements of his command to the close, member of Co. B, second organization.  He is probably related to Sarah Head, Charles Speer's first wife.  Augustus M. Head b. 1839, d. Dec. 9, 1915 buried in Old Liberty Cemetery, Bradfordsville in Marion Co., KY.

J.S. Hinkle, Oldham Co., second corporal.  At expiration of twelve-month term he joined Morgan's Cavalry, with which he continued to serve.  Third lieutenant in Company A, elected by the company, Feb. 1, 1864 during the reorganization.  This is probably John Speer Hinkle the son of March & Susan (Speer) Hinkle.

Silas Yeager, Shelby Co., third corporal.  After twelve-month term expired he joined Morgan's Cavalry, with which he continued to serve. Silas is probably related to Thomas & Rebecca Yager, the parents of Sarah Yager who married John Henry Speer.  A Silas B. Yager born Dec. 30, 1795, died Nov. 30, 1866 buried in Harrods Creek Cemetery, Brownsboro, Oldham Co., KY.

John R. Hinkle, Shelby Co., sergeant-major after reorganization.

M. Elston Hocker, Shelby Co., probably Manderville Elston Hocker, son of Newton & Nancy (Houseworth) Hocker.

Richard Long, Shelby Co., at expiration of twelve month term he joined Morgan's command and was killed in battle.  He may be related to Margaret Runyon's husband Robert M.C. Long.

William Oglesby, Oldham Co., though a man of honor and spirit, was wholly incapacitated by disease for active field service.   Probably a relative of Caspar Hinkle's wife Matilda Oglesby.

Charles Albert Speer aka Bud, Oldham Co., served out his term of enlistment. Now (1898) a citizen of Texas.  The son of Marquis D. & Susan (Hinkle) Speer he was born in Kentucky in 1843 and died in Kellyville, OK in 1922.  Charles is buried in Sunrise Cemetery in Kellyville.
