Hartford Founder's Monument
John Crow

Born: 1606 Essex, England
Died: Jan. 16, 1685/6 Hartford, Connecticut

Buried: Ancient Burying Ground, Hartford, CT

Married: 1) (--?--)
2) ca. 1640 Elizabeth Goodwin

Biography:
John Crow was one of the first settlers [of Hartford] and one of the original proprietors of our soil. He was a large land-owner and lived near the site of the late Ozias Roberts homestead, - an old unused well remaining there to-day. He owned a tract of land extending from near the present Hockanum bridge north to the neighborhood of "Smith's Lane," and running eastward to the end of the three-mile lots. Crow Hill, in the river swamp, still retains his name. He married Elizabeth Goodwin, only daughter of William Goodwin. With his father-in-law he bought 776 acres of land on this side of the river in 1639, a tract bounded west by the boggy meadow "and continueth east unto the east end of the Hartford bounds," - three miles. . . . Mr. Crow and William Pitkin were the committee who laid out the four-rod highway ordered near the meadow hill, through all the lots from Windsor to Wethersfield (now Glastonbury) in 1640. A servant of his was fined for drunkenness in 1639. Mr. Crow served on a jury in 1647. His house was one of those garrisoned for safety from the Indians in 1675. He sold out his interest (one-third) in a corn and grist mill near the site of the present Hamner & Forbes mill in 1686, and went with William Goodwin to Hadley to live. . . . John Crow was an ancestor of Elisha Pitkin, Esq., whose house is still standing a few rods northeast of the site of Mr. Crow's homestead. He died in 1685. [Goodwin, Joseph. East Hartford: Its History & Traditions, Hartford, CT: Case, Lockwood & Brainard Company, 1879]

Records:
1634 - John Crow may have come to New England on the Lion and settled at Hartford, Connecticut.

1637 - Connecticut - Hartford - John Crow was one of the original proprietors.

1639 - Connecticut - Hartford - John Crow participated in the land division for Hartford:

John Crow entitled to 20 acres.  Bartholomew Green left Hartford and his forfeited land came to John Crowe. John Crow had his houselot and his son Samuel Crow lived on it, Samuel's two children Samuel & Mary inherited the lot.  John Crow who received Greene's propriety, doubtless made the same payments. He assumed a proprietor's responsibilities and secured his privileges. Apparently the taxes had ben charges made against a propriety. They must have been proportionate to an inhabitant's interest in lands or estate. A careful study of the land records shows that there was a general correspondence between the proportions in their rule of division in 1639 . . . [Love, William. The Colonial History of Hartford, Hartford, CT: Love, 1914]

He was one of the first settlers on the east side of the river (in East Hartford) extending from near the present Hockanum bridge, north to the neighborhood of "Smith's Lane," and running eastward to the end of the three-mile lots. Crow Hill in the river swamp still retains his name. [Trumbull, James. The Memorial History of Hartford County, Connecticut, 1633-1844, Boston, MA: Edward Osgood, 1886]
