1631 Samuel Denton in Halifax, England son of Richard Denton.  Samuel immigrated to America ca. 1650.  He married Mary Rock Smith in Hempstead, NY 1656. She was born 1640 in Dorchester, MA the daughter of John Rock & Elizabeth (Gildersleeve) Smith.  They had at least one son.  Samuel and Mary died within five days of each other in 1713 in Hempstead.  The Rock Smith family used the name to distinguish themselves from several other Smith families of the Long Island area.

1568 James Morehead fought in the Battle of Langside against the King and Regent for Mary, Queen of Scots.  300 or so men were killed in about 45 minutes of battle.  James was the brother-in-law of Sir James Hamilton who was main supporter of the Queen.

Ruby Shelton

Just heard the news that Ruby Shelton passed away last night.  She was the last living child of Joel & Louisa (Dove) Lathrop's 11 children.  Ruby, born May 5, 1917 grew up on Scrub Hill and when she married Howard Shelton Jan. 5, 1935 at age 17 she moved to the bottom of the Hill.  She and Howard had three children:  Harold born & died March 2, 1936,  Marilyn born Aug. 11, 1944, died Feb. 5, 2008 and Ronnie who survives.  Howard passed away on Christmas Day 2004.  For the last several years Ruby has been living in a nursing home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.  She was 96 years old.

I'll post the obituary here when it comes out, probably tomorrow.  If anyone wants to share photos, I'll post those as well.

Ruby M. Shelton, 96, of Wayne City, died 11 p.m. May 14, 2014 at Mt. Vernon Health Care.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Shelton was born May 5, 1917 in Wayne City, the daughter of Joe and "Lula" Dove Lathrop.  She married Howard Shelton; he preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Ron (Carol) Shelton of Wayne City; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, an infant son, a grandson and 10 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church in Wayne City with the Rev. Karen Blank Ewell officiating.  Burial will be in Farnsworth Cemetery in Wayne City.

1960 Ronnie Shelton & Elaine Savage.  Ronnie is the son of Howard & Ruby (Lathrop) Shelton.  The couple had six children before divorcing.

1978 Andrew Lathrop & Elizabeth Herren.  Andrew is the son of Albert & Velma (Coil) Lathrop.  They have at least one son.

Brent Taylor

Brent Allen "Frog" Taylor, 49 of Mt. Vernon, passed away 7:01 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013.

Brent was born March 19, 1964, in New Castle, Ind. the son of Charles William and Patricia Ann (Dulaney) Taylor.

Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Wayne City High School Class of 1984.  He was of the Christian faith.  Brent worked construction until failing health.  Brent served his country in the United States Navy.

Brent is survived by his mother, Pat Taylor of Mt. Vernon; daughters, Jami and husband Lucas McCowen of Waltonville and Kyrie Taylor and special friend Tasheem Johnson of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Elizabeth and husband Tim Deutsch of Vandalia and Brenda Suitor and special friend Ed Belmont of Bluford; two brothers Frank Taylor and wife Joy of Wayne City and William Taylor and wife Stacey of Bluford; two half sisters, Mary and husband Monty Dial of Mt. Vernon and Lorie and husband Jacob Hunsell of Waltonville; and also several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Taylor.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Tracy Thomas officiating.  Military flag presentation will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.  Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time on Sunday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the family or the American Diabetes Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.

[John Anderson] came from Kentucky to this vicinity [McLeansboro, IL] about 1818.  He settled near the present spillway of the city lake.  His house served as the Seat of Justice for Hamilton County during formation and until a court building was erected in McLeansboro.  [Ralph Harrelson.  “A New Geography of Hamilton County,” Illinois Magazine, Vol. XVIII, No. 2, Feb. 1978]

Mourning died Hamilton Co., IL 1846.  The couple are buried in Rathbone Cemetery south of McLeansboro, IL.

1848 Catherine Burkhardt in Baden, Germany.  She immigrated to the United States at age 5 with her parents Simon & Susanna (Ziegler) Burkhardt.  She died in White Co., IL in 1914.

1857 Roelia Hostetler in Indiana the daughter of Christian & Anna (Blaser) Hostetler.  She died in 1886 and is buried in Amity Cemetery in Richland Co., IL.

1921 Norma Blood wife of William Dreiling.  She died in 1996.

1829 John Hunt & Jaily Hunt in Bath Co., KY.  John Wesley was born 1797 in Fleming Co., KY the son of John Tipton & Mary (Denton) Hunt.  Jaily was born in 1812 in Bath Co., KY the daughter of Absalom & Hester (Foster) Hunt.  John Tipton & Absalom were brothers, the sons of John Tipton & Mary (Overall) Hunt Sr.  John Wesley died in Brown Co. IN in 1858 and Jaily died there in 1884.  Another instance where the branch doesn’t fork!!
