This has to be the saddest census record I’ve ever used.  It is 38 pages and is called the U.S. Federal Census – 1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent and Delinquent Classes.  It begins with a census of the Jacksonville prison inmates and then moves through the list of insane, blind, deaf & dumb and orphans.  It does not give the current ages of the inmates.  It does list the cause of deafness.  These include diseases and other causes such as typhoid fever, measles, spotted fever, scarlet fever, brain fever, diphtheria, scrofula, chill and quinine.

They appear on a special census of deaf family marriages in 1893:

This past week I got J.J.'s admittance record to the Illinois Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb.  He was admitted as patient # 304, Oct. 12, 1858.  It gives his whole name as John Jasper Gurley and his occupation was a farmer.  He was 10 on January 22nd.  Lastly, his address was given as New Franklin Post Office in Wayne Co., IL, not Indiana as he reported above.
