1656 - Lancaster Co., VA - Andrew Gillson brought over Sarah Smart, Eliza Winslow, Anne Thornton, Katherine Golding, Anthony Edwards, William Bruce, John (--?--), Thomas Pool, Edward Paggett, Charles Blurteend, John Sherrine - too early to be definitive connection

1692 - April 3 - Mary Bruse, daughter of Henry & Mary Bruse, born. 

1712 - May 7 - Richmond Co., VA - Depositions of Henry Bruce aged 48 and his wife Mary aged 47, recorded in Richmond Co., Had son William Bruce born 31 Oct. 1689. 


1735 - September - Orange Co., VA - first county grand jury met and certified the following charges:

  • David Bruce, absenting himself from his parish church, later convicted and ordered to pay 10 shillings to parish church 
  • John Bruce for failure to register as a tithable as required by law. He was convicted by a jury and fined 100 pounds of tobacco. 

1783 - Culpeper Co., VA - John Wigginton's tax list includes 

  • James Bruce
  • William Bruce - owned slaves Punch and Patience
Tax rate was 10 shillings per tithe, same rate for blacks and whites; horses 2 shillings, cattle 3 pence, wheels 5 shillings.

George b. 1640 - may have had brothers or uncles Walter & William who also migrated to Virginia. lived in old Rappahannock County.  He died 1715 Richmond Co.  May have married a Settle as Francis Settle deeded land to George Bruce's children George & Jane. May have married a Jeffries as Edward Jeffries deeded land to George Bruce's children: George, Hensfield, Elizabeth, Charles, William & John.  He may have been married to the daughter of Captain Hensfield.

I. Walter Bruce -  landowner in Richmond Co. as early as 1651, purchased land from Epaphroditus Lawson in 1651. Bruce's purchase began at the mouth of Hole creek, and was bounded by Lawson's bay, etc. In all conveyances, wherever recorded, he speaks of himself of "Chuckeytuck Parish" (Nansemond County). Walter was a man of education, for he could write his name, an accomplishment to boast of in in that illiterate age.  He was a gentleman, for in all the references to him in the records, he is spoken of as Mister.  He was a man of property, as records of such counties as old Rappahannock, Surry, Lower Norfolk, Isle of Wright, etc. He married Elizabeth (--?--) Sayer widow of Thomas Sayer between 1660 and 1666.  Walter was living in 1668, but died some time previous to 1690.
