Ahnentafel #436 - Charles Hinkle

Captain Charles Anthony Hinkle

Born: 1741 Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Died: between October 10 & November 5, 1783 Rowan County, North Carolina

Buried: Unknown, possibly at nearby Bethany Church Cemetery where Philip Fox is buried or on his farm.  If you are in the area, it's worth a visit.

Married: ca. 1761 Elizabeth Johnson in Pennsylvania

Occupation: teamster bringing goods from Pennsylvania to North Carolina with his brothers:
wagoning between North Carolina and Pennsylvania seems to have been the main business of Anthony 3rd, his sons Wendel and Nathan and his brothers Charles, Peter, Henry, Benjamin and Michael.  All of whom were located in Rowan County and on Abbott's Creek except Benjamin and Michael who bought land on Dutchman Creek.  In both the records of the Moravians and the Pennsylvania Archives there are references to the Hinkle Wagons carrying supplies and letters, and during the Revolutionary War they carried Army supplies also.
Records:

1751 - Charles, age 10 receives "five pounds Pennsylvania currency per year for the bringing up of them, as long as the children are comfortably sent to school" until he is 12 years old in his father's will. The children were also to be kept "in due season to school and church, and take care that every one of them before it comes to be 18 years of age may be admitted to communion and confession."

1753, Sept. 5 - Charles, age 12 and his siblings petitioned the court for guardians:
The petition of Anthony, Philip, Charles, Henry, Peter, Michael and Bemjamin Hinkle and John Conrad and Barbara his wife, late Barbara Hinkle, a minor was presented, setting forth that the said Anthony, Philip, Charles, Henry, Peter and Benjamin Hinkle, and Barbara Conrad are all minor children of Anthony Hinkle late of Germantown who died in January 1751, seized and possessed of considerable real estate, and by will did appoint his wife Anna Margaret, now the wife of Martin Groff, and his oldest son John Hinkle, executors, and desiring the court to appoint suitable persons as their guardians, whereupon, Dewalt Endt and William Levering were appointed guardians fo those under fourteen years of age, viz., Charles, Peter, Michael, Henry and Benjamin. John Conrads was appointed guardian for his wife, and Anthony and Philip being upward of fourteen years of age made choice of William Levering as their guardian.
1753, Oct. 27 -  At this same court the children asked that auditors be appointed to examine the accounts of their mother Mrs. Groff and their brother John, in the administration of their father's estate. The court then appointed Willilam Dewees, Peter Robinson, and Samuel Morris, to examine and settle the accounts of the executors and report at the next orphans' court.  Their report filed, Oct. 27, 1753, is as follows: "Pursuant to the within order, Dewees, Morris and Robinson examined the accounts of Anna Margaret Grove one of the said executors to the said estate and find balance due to the said estate of 43 pounds, 9 shillings and 3 pence."

1766 - Sept. 2 - Charles, age 25, and his siblings partitioned their father's estate.  The settlement and division of the property was made, Sept. 2, 1766 each of the children receiving a share, John the oldest took the old home and fifteen acres of land.  This was the "Mermaid Inn" which had been established by his father, and which he continued until his removal to York County some years later.

1769 - Charles age 28, was taxed in Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania:
8 acres and dwell £9 - £5.8, 1 horse 1 cow - £1, [Total] £6.8
1775 - Charles and his brother Philip bought land in Rowan County, NC.  The property is now within Davidson County.

1775 - Charles named executor of his brother Peter's estate in Rowan County, NC.

1778 - 4 Feb. - Rowan County, NC, vacant land entry - #57 Charles Hinkle, 640 acres bounded east by Sapenfield & Clodfelter's lands & extending west . . . [I need to go back and xerox the next page. . . ]  Lands forfeited by Lord Granville's family in Rowan County, NC.  Families squatted on lands up to 15 years before they could clear the deeds.

1778 - Aug. 4 - Charles Hinkle warrant for 320 acres entered, the survey shows the creek running from the southwest to the southeast and the Guilford road running from the northwest to the southeast with a building, probably the house at the intersection of the two. The grant was issued Oct. 10, 1783.

This map is from 1890s, I believe the road labeled "Cucumber Road to Winston" is the same as "Guilford Road" in the survey.  I think it corresponds to the modern "Old Thomasville Road." It crosses Brushy Creek twice similar to the survey (just to the left of the "A" of Abbotts).  Bethany Lutheran & German Reformed Church and cemetery is located just south along Brushy Fork.  In the lower left corner are the homes of J.A. Hinkle, P. Hinkle and D. Hinkle.  I'm not sure who they are, definitely relatives, probably nephews or grand nephews of Captain Charles Hinkle. Philip Fox lived near where Danville Road crosses an unlabeled road in Midway Twp. This is near present day Gumtree.  The librarian at Lexington, North Carolina Public Library thinks "Guilford Road" is the modern Clodfelter Road located south of Bethany Church.
