James Smith, possibly James Christopher Smith

Born: ca. 1798 in Winchester, Virginia
Died: Jan. 13, 1843 in Clay Co., Illinois

Buried: probably on farm in section 11 of Hoosier Township in Clay Co., IL.

Married: Elizabeth Tewalt June 4, 1822 in Winchester, VA

Occupation: probably a farmer

According to the biographical sketch of James & Elizabeth's son John in the Madison County Illinois History James Christopher was born in Frederick Co., Virginia ca. 1795 and moved to Ohio ca. 1828 with his father Christopher.  James moved to Holmes County, Ohio in 1829 and then to Lawrence County, Indiana.  In the fall of 1839 the family  moved to Effingham County, Illinois and in 1840 they moved south into Clay County.  The biographical sketch states that James died Jan. 13, 1843.

The people of the State of Illinois to John Johnson, John Diter (?), George Sapp of the County of Clay and State of Illinois, Greetings.  This is to authorize you jointly to appraise the goods, chattels and personal estate of James Smith late of the County of Clay and State of Illinois, Deceased so far as the same shall come to your sight and knowledge each of you having first taken the oath hereto annexed & certificate whereof you are to return annexed to an appraisement bill of said goods, chattels and personal estate by you appraised in dollars and cents and in the said bill of appraisement you are to set down in a column or columns opposite each article appraised the value thereof.
