  • Hunting John Crisel & Amy Earhart who md. 1796 in Lincoln Co., NC. Is he in your Crisel file?
  • John's father was, I think, Andrew, & mom was maybe Martha Miller and I  think they came out of VA
  • One Andrew Crysel married Elizabeth Bumgarner in 1798 in Lincoln Co., NC.
  • Andrew Crissell appears in the 1790 Lincoln Co., NC census and then I find one Andrew Crysel on the 1800 Logan Co., KY census. Logan Co., KY is adjacent to Robertson Co., TN where a group named Krisle are found. This is also near Williamson Co., TN where my Christley ancestors migrated in 1800-1810 time period.
  • There is also one Jeremiah Crysel/Crystal in Wilkes Co., NC whose family intermarried with Bumgardners and I think they are all connected somehow.
  • I have a will in which Andrew Crisel jr. is given part of an estate of a man named Bumgarner, who died in Lincoln Co., NC
  • Is your man George, son of Andrew Crisel & Ms. Miller? George W. Crisel (b. 1772, NC) m. Elizabeth Word ca. Apr. 1801 Lincoln Co., NC. Children: Catherine md. Nicholas Trammell; George W. b. 1812 KY; Mary b. 1820 IL. I am hunting the line of John, also son of Andrew and wife Amy Earhart, I think.

Nelson, Doris. Shawneetown Land Entry Plat Maps 1814-1820, no imprint
In 1807 squatters records for Hardin and Pope Counties came from two long-lost manuscripts discovered recently in the National Archives. The missing report, published in 1977 for the first time, is in response to the provisions of the following Act of Congress: An Act to Prevent Settlements Being made on Lands Ceded to the United States Until Authorized by Law, March 3, 1807.
The report lists the name, location and application of each settler permitted to remain on government land occupied prior to March 3, 1807. They were permitted to remain, provided permission was applied for before January 1, 1808. Any person found residing on public land without permission after that date was to be driven off, fined, or imprisoned. No grants however, were authorized until 1814.
In 1814, a government land office was established at Shawneetown. Land was sold first at public auction, and what was left was sold later at a minimum of $2.00 an acre. Payments could be made over a three-year period.
The idea for this book for this book came about as I was doing research for my husband's family tree. I found that I wanted to see exactly where his ancestors lived around them, in order to get a more general picture of how they lived. After drawing a map, I plotted their land entries on it. Soon, I had the whole county done. This proved to be so fascinating that I decided to try another county, and thus started the ball rolling.  After finishing nine counties, I decided to stop and put them all together in a book for others to use.
Of course, at the time these land entries were made, the counties did not have the same boundaries they do today. They were constantly changing, and more counties were added as the population grew. Gallatin and Johnson Counties were formed in 1812 and took in most of the area covered in this book. In 1816, Pope County was formed from part of Gallatin and Johnson. In 1818, Franklin County took part of Gallatin and White. In 1821, White County was divided again, and the west part became Hamilton County. Williamson County came into being in 1839, dividing up Franklin County. Hardin County took the east part of Pope County in 1839, with its boundaries being readjusted in 1840 to where they are now. In 1843, Massac County was formed from Johnson and Pope, and Gallatin County was divided in 1847, with the west part becoming Saline County.
