  • Davis, Ezekiel - Aby Stout, Jul 25, 1818

Green County Historical Society. Green County Marriage Records 1793-1836, no imprint, nd
The book is composed of records from several sources: Marriage Books A & B, Marriage Bonds (coded as B in the text) and Consent Papers (coded as C) for
the period 1793-1836. The consent papers are particularly valuable for the genealogist, because they identify the parents of the bride and/or groom in many instances.
It will be noted that there are, in addition to those marriages bonded and recorded, a large number of marriages recorded but not bonded, and marriage intentions bonded but not recorded. For the former, let it be said that over the years, many of the old bonds have disappeared. In the case of the latter, the reader is reminded that the Green County of today is a rather small remnant of the originally very large political division, which then contained wholly or in part the present counties of Cumberland, Barren, Adair, Hart, Taylor, Pulaski, Wayne, Casey, Russell, Monroe, Clinton & Metcalfe.

Sutherland, James. Early Kentucky Householders 1787-1811, Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1986
Tax records provide a better sampling of the householders than federal census records because the pioneers were mobile during the westward movement of the frontier. Some settlers moved into Kentucky after a census was taken and then moved out of the state before the next census. They could be missed in the tax list for one year, such as 1790 or 1800, from which the federal census has been reconstructed, but it is unlikely that they could evade the tax commissioner every year for twenty-three years and thereby be omitted from this book.
Forty-six counties of the 54 Kentucky counties which existed in the year 1811 are mentioned in the descriptions of landholdings claimed by the Lincoln County householders for the years 1787-1811. Many of the persons living in Lincoln County claimed land in other counties when there were only three counties in the state, or they live din an area of the parent county which was eventually split off to form a new county. That information is lost if a researcher does not know that information relating to his subject is available in an "unrelated" county tax list. There are no landholdings listed with the householders in this book because that additional information would have expanded the book beyond what may be published and marketed in a single volume. . . .
Only information useful in correlating entries or for genealogical purposes was transcribed. The number of slaves, horses, cattle, or 4-wheeled carriages was not transcribed, but the location and acreage of landholdings along with the name of prior land-assignees were carefully recorded. . . .
The date shown for each householder in the index is the date of entry into the tax list by the commissioner. Neighbors were usually listed together in the same tax book with the same data of entry. . . .
