Know all men by these presents that we Jacob Young and Abraham Goodnight are held and firmly bound until Isaac Shelby, Esquire, Governor of Kentucky in the sum of fifty pounds current money to payment whereof will and truly to be made unto the said Governor or his successors.  We bind ourselves, our heirs, Executors and Adm'ors &c. jointly and severally firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 11th day of Dec. 1792

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Jacob Young and Rachel Goodnight now if there be any lawful reason to obstruct the said marriage then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force.

Military: American Revolution, 1781, served as trumpeter as per pension application:

Shelby County & State of Kentucky

On this 15th day of October in the year 1839 personally appeared before the County Court of the aforesaid county Jacob Young a resident citizen of said county who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in Order to obtain the benefit of the provisions of th Act of Congress of the 17th June 1832 providing for certain surviving officers and soldiers of the Army of the Revolution saith that he was born in the County of Mecklenberg in the state of North Carolina and that he is now about sixty eight years of age that he has no record of his age.  He states that he enlisted at about the age of sixteen in Captain Burns troop of Light Horse in the County aforesaid in the State last aforsaid to serve for the period of ten months.  He states that he cannot state the month & year in which he enlisted, but he states that it was about eight or nine months before the battle of the Eutaw Springs [1781] the Lieutenant of in Captain Burns's Troop was named Snoddy, Captn. Wade Hampton commanded one Regiment Major Rutherford was attached to the regiment who was shot at the Eutaw Springs at which time this applicant was about sixteen years old and had then been in service about eight or nine months.  He states that he served as trumpeter in Capt. Burns Troop he does not recollect the Christian name of the his captain or lieutenant.  He served out the term for which he enlisted and was discharged at the Four Holes Bridge in the state of South Carolina in which he done most of the service rendered by him.  He has  no written discharge and thinks that his company was discharged by word from the officer commanding.  He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the United States or on the roll of any state sworn to and subscribed in open court the day & year aforesaid.

Also personally appeared before the said court at the same time and place Henry Townsend a resident citizen of Oldham County in this state who being of lawful age and first duly sworn upon his oath states that he is now about sixty five years old that he was born in the same county and state in which the aforesaid applicant Jacob Young was born which is again the county of Mecklenberg in the state of North Carolina that his father was a near neighbor of the father of the aforesaid Jacob and that he has known said Jacob Young from his infancy, that he believes the age of said Jacob to be as he states. This deponent states that he was about twelve or thirteen years old when said Jacob enlisted, he remembers that he enlisted in the Revolutionary War, and he believes that he served as he in his aforesaid Declaration states. He knows that said Jacob went into the Army and was absent he thinks twelve months but it may not habe been so long. He states that Jacob Young aforesaid is a man of Truth and his statements are entitled to full credit. This Deponent states that he knows Andrew Young whose affidavit taken before a Justice of the Peace in Washington County Kentucky is now shown to him, and he also knows John Condor whose affidavit is now shown to him purporting to have been taken at the same time and place and before the same Justice of the Peace, viz John S. Watts. This deponent states that the aforesaid Andrew Young and John Condor are men of Truth, and their statements ought to be believed (sic). Said Andrew is a brother of said Jacob and older than him, and served in the Revolution this Deponent believes as he in his Affidavit states. Further this Deponent saith ot. Sworn to & subscribed in Open Court the day & year aforesaid.

Also personally appeared before the Court at the same time and place William Wascom a resident Citizen of the County of Shelby and State of Kentucky who being of lawful age and first duly sworn upon his oath doth say that he is now seventy-two years old the 13th day of September last; that he has lived a near neighbor to the aforesaid Jacob Young for Thirty-one years, and that his, the aforesaid Jacob's character is that of an industrious hard working man, and a man of truth and well esteemed in his neighborhood and his statements ought to be believed. This Deponent always understood that sd. Jacob had served in the Revolutionary Army, and that his age is as he states in his aforsd. Declaration. This Deponent also states that he knows the aforesaid Henry Townsend, and states that he is a man of Truth and his statements are entitled to credit. Sworn to & subscribed in open Court the day & year aforesaid.

And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter,  and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War department that the above applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states, and the Court further Certifies that it appears to them that the aforsaid Henry Townsend who has signed the affidavit aforsaid is a resident in the County of Oldham & state of Kentucky, that the aforsaid Jacob Young the applicant herein and the aforsaid William Wascom who signed the affidavit over his signature are both residents of the County of Shelby and state of Kentucky and that the said Young and Wascom and Townsend are all creditable persons, and that their statements are entitled to full credit.

This Day Andrew Young came before me John S. Watts a Justice of the Peace for the sd. County and made oath that Jacob Young served in the Revolution as a trumpeter part of his time and in the [w]hole served Ten months with himself as a horseman he is now sixty-eight years old he was sixteen years old at The battle of Utau [Eutaw] Springs and at that time had served 8 or 9 months and some short time after that battle the ten months referred he was under The command of General Sumter, Coln. Hampton, Major Rutherford, & Capt. Burns and was legally discharged.

Also John Conder came before me at the same time and made oath that at the time of the Battle of the Utau Springs in The Revolution he was about 14 or 15 years old and lived near Jacob Young and understood that he served a ten months tour and knows he was absent about that time and hence good grounds to believe that he did serve as above stated by Andrew Young.

I Do certify that the above named Andrew Young and John Conder was legally sworn before me this Day and is of Reputable Careactar [character]. This 12th September 1832. John S. Watts, J.P.

The evidence in support of your claim under the act of June 7, 1832, has been examined and the papers are herewith returned.  The following is a statement of your cas in tabular form.  On comparing these papers with the following rules and the subjoined notes you will readily perceive that objections exist, which must be removed before a pension can be allowed.  The notes and the regulations will shew what is necessary to be done.  Those point to which your attention is more particularly directed you will find marke din the marger with a brace, (thus: }).  You will, when you return you papers to this Department, send this printed letter with them; and you will, by complying with this request, greatly facilitate the investigation of your claim.

Records: 

1790 - February - Tax List - a Jacob Young is on the tax roll in Lincoln Co., KY.  Lincoln County is adjacent to Mercer County where he married Rachel Goodnight. 

1790 - June 23 - Tax List - a Jacob Young is on the tax roll in Kentucky. 

1790 - September 27 - Mecklenburg Co., NC - Jacob Young mentioned in administration of his father's estate. 

1791 - August 2 - A deed describes a sale of land whereby Martin, Jacob, John and Michael Young of Mecklenburg County sold land to Andrew Young. The sale involved 100 acres of land, but twenty acres of said land falls to the said Andrew Young from his father.  Jacob and his brothers sold their interest in the land to their brother Andrew. The land was located on the watercourse called Three Mile Branch, and a search through earlier deed records shows this was the same land that a John Young had purchased in August 1787 from the State of North Carolina in Grant #611. The land description was the same in both deeds, indicating that the father of Jacob, Andrew, Michael, Martin and John Young was a John Young who died prior to August 1791 leaving his 1787 land purchase to five sons, four of whom sold their shares to Andrew. 

1797 - Shelby Co., KY, tax lists - Jacob must have seen "greener pastures" because he moved to Shelby County where he was named on the tax lists starting in 1797 although no land was taxed in his name until 1806. 

1799 - Mercer Co., KY tax list - entry made that Jacob Young had "gone to Shelby County" 

1806 - Shelby Co., KY - Jacob bought 150 acres on the waters of Long Run and Little Bullskin Creek. These creeks are located in the northwest section of the county.

This Indenture made this 10th day of Feby. 1806 between Charles Lynch & John Blandon of the county of Shelby, State of Kentucky of the one part & Jacob Young of the county & State of Kentucky afsd. of the other part Witnesseth that the said Lynch & Blanton for & in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifty pounds good and lawful money of Kentucky to them in hand paid the receipt whereof his hereby acknowledged htha bargained & sold unto the said Young 150 acres of land in the county afsd. on the waters of long run & little Bullskin & bounded as follows: (towit) Beginning at 3 sugartrees 24 poles West of Robert Mitchels NW corner thence north 206 poles to a beech & elm Marked IH & ILY thence east 112 poles to a beech & sugartree thence South 206 poles to a hickory & black oak in Robert Mitchels line west 112 poles to the begining To have and To hold the said 150 acres of land together with all & singular the premises & appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining to him the Jacob Young his heirs & assigns forever and the said Charles Lynch & John Blanton for themselves, their heirs and doth hereby covenant & agree ----- with the said -----.

1833 - Feb. 28 - Deed, Jacob & his wife Catherine sold 20 some acres to his son Michael in Shelby Co., KY:

This Indenture made this 28th day of February 1833 between Jacob Young and Katherine his wife of the county of Shelby and state of Kentucky of the one part and Michael Young of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.  Witnesseth that the said Jacob Young and Katherine Young his wife for and in consideration of three hundred & six dollars and fifteen cents in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained & sold and by these presents as a grant ----- in & sell unto the said Michael Young his heirs & assigns all that tract or parcel of land situate & being in the county and state aforesaid being a part of a survey patented in the name of Grenville Smith and on the waters of Long run and bounded as follows to-wit:

Beginning at a blue ash corner the George Conover (?) thence N 38 poles to a stone corner to John Alexander's in a line of James Hollingsworth thence N68 E 74 1/2 poles to stone corner to John Alexander in a line Abram Goodnight's   heirs thence south with Goodknight's line 71 1/2 poles to a stone corder to A. Goodknight in a line with Geo. Conover (?) thence W 19 1/2 poles to the Beginning containing twenty ---- acres two rods & c--- perches be the same more or less together with all & singular the appurtenances unto the said Michael Young his heirs & assigns forever and the said Jacob Young and his wife Katharine Young for their --- heirs exctrs & admns the aforesaid tract of land & appurtenances unto the said Michael Young his heirs & assigns against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever do warrant and will forever defend by these presents In witness whereof the said Jacob Young and Katharine Young his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written

Whitaker Clerk of the County Court for the County aforesaid do certify that this deed from Jacob Young and Catherine his wife to Michael Young was produced to me in the office by the grantor and acknowledged by the said Jacob to be his act and deed and the said Catherine being examined by me separate and apart from her said husband declared that she did fully and willingly seal and ndeliver the said writing and wishes not te retract it and acknowledged she said writing again shown and explained to her to be her act and deed and consents that the same may be recorded where upon the said deed together with this certificate was duly recordedin my office.  Given under my hand this 28th day of February 1833.

Pleas before the honorable Abel Findley judge of the probate court for the county of Jackson in the State of Indiana. 

Be it remembered that heretofore, to wit, on the 12th day of September 1836 personally appeared before William Crenshaw clerk of this Court in the clerks office of the same John Stergeon and represented the Death of Jacob Young deceased, and that he was possessed of at the time of his death goods and chattles, rights and credits and requests that administration of the same should be granted unto him and by consent of the heirs of said decedent administration is granted unto the said John Stergeon he having entered into bond with Harrison Young, Jacob Young and Daniel Kress in the sum of twenty five hundred dollars conditioned according to law and took the required by law as such administrator.

And now at this time, viz, on the 18th of October 1836, comes the said Administrator and files the appraise Bill as well as the Sale Bill of said Estate together with his account current against the Estate as follows (to wit)

1836 - Settlement and Distribution of Jacob Young's Estate

John Stergen admr. of Jacob Young dec'd. vs the heirs & Creditors - On Motion for settlement and order for Distribution.

Now at this time came the parties into Court and enter upon a settlement but failing to get through this cause is continued til tomorrow. 

John Sturgeon admr. of Jacob Young dec'd. vs. the Heirs & Creditors - On Motion for settlement and order for Distribution. 

Now at this time comes the administrator aforesaid and files his account current, and it is found that he has made of the said Estate the sum of $891.17 3/4 and that the debts and expences of administration are $207.17 3/4 which when deducted from the amount of the estate leave a ballance in the hands of the administrator of $683.33 1/2 to which the widow of sd. decedent is entitled to one third it being $227.77 3/4 which causes a ballance in the hands of said administrator of $455.55 1/2, Subject to distribution among the Heirs as follows, viz, To Solomon Hobbs $10.33.3 To Peirson Waskom $28.14.9, To Michael Young $9.80.3 To John L. Young $67.25.9 To Joseph Waskom $36.23.7 To Thomas Young $34.49.1 To John Sturgeon $23.05.7 To Andrew J. Young $82.21. To Martha E. Young $82.21 and To Hetty Young $82.21. It is ordered and decreed by the Court that the said Administrator proceed to distribute to each heir his or her Equitable proportion aforesaid upon them filing their several Refunding bonds in the Clerk's office of said County whereupon came the Widow aforesaid and filed her Refunding bonds and received her said third aforesaid. And for want of time this cause is continued til tomorrow.

Came at this time William H.H. It is ordered by the court that John Sturgen administrator aforesaid of the Estate of Jacob Young deceased as aforesaid from all further activity as administrator as aforesaid, all of of which ordered adjudged and finally decreed.
