Married: 1) Jane Anderson 4/11/1842 in Fayette Co., Kentucky and 2) Nancy Louisa Young 9/23/1844 in Shelby Co., Kentucky

Census/Records:
1830 Kentucky, Fayette Co. - age 8 there is a John Runnion family living there which may be his father.  There were six males and six females in the household.

1840 Kentucky, Fayette Co. - age 18 there is a John Runyan family living in Fayette County.  There were twelve family members and four slaves.

1850 Kentucky, Jefferson Co. - age 28 with $1940 worth of real estate with Nancy and two children. 

1853 Deed James bought 120 acres from William Enochs for $3087.50 on Curry's Creek in Oldham County, Kentucky. 

1856 Deed James bought 25 1/4 acres from James Allan for $757.50 in Oldham County.

1860 Kentucky, Oldham Co. - age 38 a farmer with $6450 worth of real estate and personal estate valued at $1440.  He is living with Louisa and four children.  There is a woman named Mary Conn who does not appear to be a relative and George Hocker is an 18 year old farm laborer, Nancy's cousin.

1863 - July - 5th Congressional District of Kentucky, consisting of the counties Jefferson, Henry, Owen & Oldham - James appears on a U.S. Army list of men subject to military duty along with someone named William Runyan:

1880 Kentucky, Oldham Co. - age 57, James is listed as a farmer and is living with Louisa.  There are three children living in the home including Anna (Runyon) Speer.  She was probably separated from her husband John.  There is also a 14 year old black farm laborer in the home. 

1880 Deed James & Nancy sold land to their daughter-in-law Belle (Slater) Runyon after their son James died.

1898, Feb. 4.  - James wrote his will:
I, James M. Runyon of Oldham County Kentucky being of sound mind do make and publish this my last will and testament.
First. - I desire that my debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Second. - I will and bequeath to my wife N.L. Runyon all of my real estate during her life.
Third. - I will and bequeath to her all of my personal property of every kind to be used and disposed of every kind to be used and disposed of in any way she may think best for her comfort.  I desire that no inventory of my personal estate be made. 
Fourth. - Having advanced to my daughter Ann Eliza Speer one hundred and ninety dollars it is to be deducted from her share of my estate if not paid before the death of my wife, without any interest.
Fifth. - I desire after the death of my wife that my daughter Mrs. J.A. Piatt by a former wife have the sum of one dollar.
Sixth. - I then desire after the death of my wife that my estate be equally divided between my children Ann Eliza Speer, Mary L. Lowery, Wm. A. Runyon, Fannie E. Gurley and M.N. Runyon.  Witness my hand this 4th day of Feb. 1898

1898 - March 28 Term, State of Kentucky, Oldham County Court  
A writing dated the 4th day of February 1898 purporting to be the last will and testament of James M. Runyon dec'd. late resident of Oldham County Kentucky was on this day produced in court and filed and proven to be such by the oaths of J.E. Vincent and G.W. McAlister the two subscribing witnesses thereto.  It is therefor adjudged by the Court that said writing is the true last will and testament of said testator and that the same be recorded as and for the true last will and testament of James M. Runyon deceased which is done accordingly.
