New England's Indian Wars, American Heritage, no imprint
Just before the Mayflower came to Plymouth, an epidemic, perhaps introduced by white seamen, had decimated the Algonquian tribes on the New England coast. So the Pilgrims planted their first crops in deserted Indian cornfields. One day in March, 1621, Samoset, a visiting Pemaquid from Maine, strode into the Plymouth settlement and addressed the colonists in the broken English he had learned from fishermen. He arranged a meeting between the Pilgrim leaders and the grand sachem of the nearby Wampanoags, Massasoit, who signed a treaty of peace and later attended (with 90 of his braves) the first Thanksgiving dinner. Another helpful Indian, Squanto, who had lived in London for several years after being kidnapped by an English captain, moved in with the Pilgrims as interpreter, guide and instructor in agriculture.
This happy state of affairs lasted a dozen years. After the great Puritan migration began, the small and divided New England tribes were caught in a desperate squeeze. Settlers pushed them off the best land; overbearing white traders, armed with muskets, gave them many bad bargains. There was no refuge farther west, where the Mohawks along the Hudson River were the merciless foes of the New England Algonquians.
The Pequot War of the 1630s was really an organized massacre to revenge scattered killings of whites and the burning of Westerfield in the new Connecticut colony. It began when John Oldham, a well-known trader, was killed on his boat by hatchet-wielding Pequots from Block Island. A Massachusetts force led by John Endecott went after the murderers, but the Pequots hid them. On May 26, 1637, Major John Mason [grandpa] and 90 Connecticut soldiers set fire to a fort near the Mystic River where 600 Pequot men, women and children were penned up with no chance for escape. "It was a fearfull sight to see them thus frying in the fryer, and the streams of blood quenching the same, and horrible was the stinck and sente ther of," wrote Governor Bradford [grandpa] of Plymouth, who noted also that hundreds of Narragansett Indians - then the allies of the colonists - "stood round aboute . . . and left the whole execution to the English, except it were the stoping of any that broke away." More fleeing Pequots were caught and killed near Fairfield, Connecticut, and a small band that reached Mohawk territory - including their principal sachem Sassacus - were immediately put to death by those Indians.
A son of Massasoit named Metacom - known to the whites as King Philip - endeavored from 1662 on to unite the New England tribes in a league like that of the Iroquois. In 1675 some of Philip's men murdered a Christian ("Praying") Indian who had informed the English of this activity.  Colonial officials demanded that Philip's warriors surrender their flintlock muskets. Instead, Philip struck at Swansea, Massachusetts - the signal for a general war that briefly threatened New England's existence. Of 90 towns in the four colonies, 52 were attacked and 12 destroyed; the Connecticut Valley was overrun. The decisive battle was fought in Rhode Island between a 1,000-man New England army and 3,000 Narragansetts, who were strongly entrenched, with plenty of guns, behind palisades and blockhouses. The Great Swamp Fight of 1675, according to Samuel Eliot Morison, "was the toughest battle, not excepting Bunker Hill, ever fought on New England soil."  It cost the New Englanders 80 dead, including eight company commanders; 2,000 Narragansetts were killed in battle or burned to death later. The war lasted eight more months, until Philip's last followers lost the battle of Bridgewater Swamp. Philip himself was shot down in the woods near his home base at Mount Hope; his head was displayed on a pole at Plymouth for the next 20 years.  It took Massachusetts the same length of time to repair the damage done by King Philip's War.

Matthias Button Sr., the immigrant came to America with Gov. John Endicott, landing at Salem, Mass., Sept. 6, 1628.
He was the son of Thomas Button of Harrold, Bedford Co., England, baptized Oct. 11, 1607. Died at Haverhill, Mass., Aug. 13, 1672. John & Ann Wheeler came to New England in 1634 on the Mary & John and settled in Newbury, Mass.
Matthias was about 20 when he arrived in New England. His stay in Salem was brief; he soon removed to Boston, where he is found among the earliest settlers. He identified himself with the First Church of England sometime previous to 1633.  He removed thence to Ipswich, where he was a commoner in 1641 and thence in 1646 to Haverhill, where he died.

Robert Button was admitted to the 1st Church at Salem Feb. 27, 1641-2 and made freeman May 18, 1642. He was chosen constable Nov. 29, 1642 and appears to have had a grant of land in Salem. Robert moved to Boston about 1644.  He left a will in 1650 naming his wife Abigail, son Samuel, daughters Abigail, Hannah and Sarah.
John Button was a pioneer of Boston. There is no known connection between him and Matthias or Robert above. He was a miller and lived near his windmill on Copp's Hill. According to a deposition taken in 1673 he was born in 1599.  John died in Boston in 1681.  He married 1 ) ca. 1618 Grace (--?--) and 2) 1640 Joanna (--?--), & 3) Mary (--?--).

Buttons of Dyffryn (Worlton), Glamorgan County, Wales - A Norman family, originally called Le Grant, but called Button for some twelve or fourteen generations lived in Wales. There is some obscurity concerning the origin and history of the family. The origin of this line was apparently Gwien Le Grant, Duke of Saville, who married Mabel, daughter of Richard de Clare. A Thomas Le Grant fifth generation descendant of the Duke, was the first to be called by the surname Button. Some say it was a nickname with playful reference to his small stature. He married Grissyl, he Welch heiress of Dyffryn, probably late in the thirteenth century. His son, Howell Button, who married Guenllium, daughter of Tomkin Turbenville of Tylhegston, his mother being Lucy, daughter and co-heir of Sir John Norris, knigh of Penlline Castle. His descendants intermarried with the families of Gethin of Llandaff.
We find the Buttons of Dyffryn filling the office of High Sheriff of Glamorgan many times under the various Kings and Queens of England.
In 1557, James Button of Worlton, who had been an undersheriff in he reign of Henry Viii, was High Sheriff in the reign of Philip & Mary.
In 1565 and 1539, Miles Button of Worlton, who had been under-sheriff in the reign of Philip & Mary, was High Sheriff in the reign of Elizabeth I.
In 1640, Robert Button of Dyffryn was High Sheriff in the reign of Charles I.
Sir Thomas Button, the Admiral, perhaps looms largest in English history and ranks as one of Glamorganshire's most famous men. He entered the Naval service in 1589 and died in April 1634.
Admiral Button has been commonly believed by many to be the father of Matthias Button. This is completely untrue. He was never of the area where Matthias is believed to have been born, was alive many years after the death of Thomas Button, father of Matthias. He married twice and left a large family; of these, his only sons were named Myles, William and Rice. They themselves, continued in the Naval service and are easily identified in English history.
