Jacob Erkman, Sr. page 218 Probated 18th October 1875. To my son Jacob Erkman, Jr. $5, my daughter Clara Erkman I give $5, my son John G. Erkman I give $5. The rest I give to my youngest children now living to wit: Catherine Erkman, Fredrick Erkman, Martin Erkman and Magdelana Erkman. Should any child be born to me hereafter i is my will that said child or children shall share and receive an equal amount with the last named children. If either of my last four named children die before I do, the surviving children of he last named four are to take the part that would have belonged to the one that dies. 10th December 1874. Witnesses Jasper Partridge and Thomas G. Parker

Jacob Erkman 61 years of Carmi, Illinois, page 192. My wife Fredericka Erkman after paying all my just debts and funeral expenses, is to have all of my property both real and personal. My wife is to pay the following children: George Erkman, Clara Zeller, Kate Damsey [Dempsey], Madaline Driling [Dreiling], Elizabeth Erkman and Jacob Erkman Jr., the sum of $5 which is to be in full of all their interest in my estate the above being children by my first wife.   

It is my will that my wife shall support our minor children and pay each of them as they arrive at the age of eighteen for the girls and twenty one for the boys, the sum of $5 towit: Fredrick Erkman, Edward Erkman, John G. Erkman, Annie Erkman, Sophia Erkman, Joseph Erkman and Harry [Henry] Erkman which amount is and shall be in full of their share of my estate. The last named children being by my new present wife. Executrix my wife Fredericka Erkman without bond. 4th May 1896. Witnesses Phil Appel and Nathaniel Holderby both of Carmi, Illinois. Probated 25th September 1908.

Hawthorne (46 years old), E.W. King both Enfield, Illinois. Later Hawthorne is in Houston, Chickasaw County Mississippi. 2nd July 1913. H.E. Bronnon, Chancery Clerk. 

Joseph A. Maier 76 years of Carmi, Illinois, page 584. Wife Clara Maier. My son Reuben A. Maier his wife is Mable Maier. Executor Reuben A. Maier. 15th April 1913. Witnesses Maggie L. Widner and C.S. Conger, Jr. both of Carmi, Illinois. Probated 7th October 1914. 

Mrs. William Dietz died Wednesday June 28, 1915 at her home in Carmi. Affir Clarke Dietz was a daughter of Joel and Mary Clarke and was born in Carmi May 27, 1858. She married in Carmi to William Dietz February 25, 1877. Their children are Lloyd of New Orleans, La., Henry, Frank, Mrs. Mary Barton of Carmi and Mrs. Lewis C. Taylor of Bicknell, Ind. Her husband survives her. She was a member of the Christian Church. Funeral services held at the Church by Rev. W.P. Hill. Burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery. 

Alva S. Durrell - Carmi's best known old soldier, died April 13, 1915. He lost one eye in the war and the other eye 20 years ago. He was seventy nine years old. He leaves a faithful wife and four children: Seth of Cottonwood, Clark of Brownsville, Mrs. Mary Miller of Kansas, John of Mt. Vernon and a step daughter Mrs. Oscar McGhee. Funeral at the home in South Carmi. Interment in Maple Ridge.  Alva S. Durrell was born in Clark Co. May 15, 1836. He served in the army 3 years. He married Elizabeth Monical Sept. 18, 1864. She lived only one year. He went to Posey Co., Ind., and after several years joined Co. C. 111th Inf. He lost his eye July 22, 1864, and was discharged in 1865. He returned to Posey Co. and married Mrs. Nancy Bates on June 20, 1866. They had five children, one has died. After the death of his second wife, he married in 1897 to Mrs. Frances Foley. He lost sight in the other eye about twenty years ago. 

James Wheeler a young man died in the Lost Creek drainage ditch where he was swimming near Enfield on the Gray farm. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wheeler and about 24 years of age. He leaves a wife, two small children, several brothers to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held Wednesday.
