Remember these old buildings? The First National Bank now has a wonderful parking area where they used to be located. Sledge's Flowers and much more of the Wayne City business district can be seen now that the buildings are gone.

Building on the right - Henry Erkman's pool hall, building on the left Frank "Toad" Tenny's tin shop.  The First National Bank they are talking about is now the public library.  Sledge's Flower shop they mention was in the old hotel and is long gone now.

Letter from Meta (Nicklasson) Kittle to Zelphia (Lathrop) Shelton, page 1
Wayne City, Ill.
July 14, 1929

Dear Zelphia!
I received your letter and was sure glad to hear from you. How are you? We are all well. We have been out all day today and just got home a little while ago. We went to church this morning at Mt. Zion and the preachers family & us all went home with Oliver Baileys for dinner. I guess we will go to church again tonight if it doesn't rain. It rained hard here this morning and the roads was pretty muddy when we went to church. They didn't have no Sunday School today as there wasn't many there and we all got there so late. Bertha [Nicklasson] is at home today. She came to Wayne City yesterday with Mrs. Bain (preacher's wife). She works in the factory over there now & then. Bertha came out with Deckers from Wayne City. Bertha is out of work now she says she may stay home a couple days. There was an ice cream supper at the Methodist Church at Wayne City last night. We didn't go and there is one . . .
at the Band Stand next Wednesday night. Us kids have been going to Band Concert every Wednesday night with Deckers.
We were sure shocked when we heard about George. He was out swimming when he got drowned. There was about 2,500 or 3,000 persons swimming at that time. He was just in the water three minutes when he got drowned. His cousin in Okla. wrote he would be out here in a few weeks as he couldn't come right then.

Well this is Monday and a rainy day too. I didn't finish this letter yesterday as we didn't intend to go to the mail box before the mail carrier passed this morning. Your Papa & Mama drove down here a little while yesterday evening. Ruby [(Lathrop) Shelton] came with them & stopped at Ruby Deckers. We went to church last night, there wasn't many there. It sure has been raining today. I didn't see Ila and Eleanor when they was out. I guess you are working hard now cooking for so many. We have been picking and canning berries.

now too. Bertha said there was two carloads that drive back & forth from Wayne City now. Mrs. Bain takes their car & takes some with her.

Bertha & Tressie [Lathrop] are the only ones in No. 7 now.  Tressie didn't come home Sat. so I guess she is by herself in No. 7 now.  I guess Bertha will go back about Wed. she thought she would have work by then. I guess I will go this fall sometime. I don't know just when.
Thelma was out last Sunday. She was at Sunday School with Mr. Davis, she came out Sat. evening  & was going back Sunday evening. She works in the packing house at East St. Louis.
Well I guess I have told all I know.
As Ever Your Friend
