Hannah, the daughter of David & Rebecca (Clark) was born in Ohio in
1834. They had two children. Henry enlisted in Co. G of the 49th
IL infantry. His enlistment papers
describe him as age 28, 5’10” tall with light hair, blue eyes and fair
complexion. His occupation was listed as
farmer. Henry mustered in at Camp
Butler, IL near Springfield. He died ca. 1863 in a Civil War hospital in Mound
City, IL. Hannah moved to Wayne Co., IL
and lived with her parents. She is
buried in Mt. Zion / Farnsworth Cemetery.

Leonard the son of William & Polly (?) Gurley was born in NC
1823. Susanna born 1837 in KY was the
daughter of Alfred & Elizabeth (Durall) Morehead. They married each other in 1857 and had five
children, divorced ca. 1868.
Petition of Susanna GurleyState of IllinoisCounty of Wayne To the Honorable James W. Pollack Judge of the circuit court in and for the county of Wayne and State of Illinois. Humbly representing your petitioner showeth unto your Honor that her name is Susanna Gurley that she was the wife of Leonard Gurley and that she lives in the county of Wayne and State of Illinois. That on or about the 1st of October 1857 she was married to one Leonard Gurley, that at the time of her marriage she was the owner in fee of 80 acres of land in Massac Co., Ills. and about $100 secured to be paid by note and mortgage on Real Estate in Massac County and other property in all of the value of Four or Five hundred dollars which was taken into the possession of the said Leonard Gurley and by him converted to his own use and benefit. That at the last term of your Honorable Court in and for said county of Wayne and state of Illinois a bill for divorce was presented by said Leonard Gurley against your petitioner charging her with adultery with Francis Hillhouse and with other persons and that she was duly served with summons to appear and answer the said bill of Divorce that she is not guilty of the crimes or offences or any of them mentioned and alleged against her by the said bill of divorce and that she had a good and sufficient defense to the same at the time when the same came up for hearing towit at the August Term A.D. 1867 of your Honorable Court and that she was forcibly prevented by the said Leonard Gurley from appearing before your Honor at the time and term aforesaid that she started from her home to come to Fairfield to make her defense and that her said husband followed her and forced her to return and to prevent your petitioner from attending the said Court amongst other things he falsely promised her that he would abandon his attempts to get a divorce and he also falsely represented to her that he was going to a blacksmith shop in the neighborhood when he really came to court then in session in Fairfield in said county and attended the prosecution of the divorce. Your petitioner also represent that said Leonard Gurley and herself had born to them five children towit Henry aged 9 years, Nancy Ann 7 years, Alfred Lewis 5 years old, Elizabeth E. 4 years old, James Robert 2 years next January 1868 and that said Gurley is not a proper person to keep or have the care of said children that Gurley is a common drunkard and in all respects an improper person to have said children. And in consideration of these premises your petitioner prays that Leonard Gurley be made defended to this bill that a summons may issue etc. compelling said defendants to answer but not under oath an answer under oath being hereby specially waived and that upon a final hearing of this cause your Honor may order that the decree of divorce obtained by said Leonard Gurley from your petitioner be set aside and declared null and void and of no effect and that a new trial or hearing may be awarded in the said cause and your petitioner allowed to make her defenses thereto and that if the same cannot lawfully be done then that your petitioner may be granted alimony out of the property of said Gurley for her support and that her homestead rights in and to the said described tracts of land towit Be established and allowed to her and that the care and custody of said children be awarded to her and that sufficient amount be ordered to be paid out of the property of said Gurley for the support and maintenance of said children. And your petitioner also prays that a writ of injunction may issue ____ and restraining the said Leonard Gurley from selling, assigning, ______ destroying or transferring or putting out of his possession any of the property now owned by him or in any way placing the same at such a condition that the same may not be liable to all orders of the court that may hereafter be made with reference to alimony or other allowance prayed for in this bill. And that your Honor will decree to your petitioner temporary alimony to defray the expenses of the prosecution of this suit and for her support during its pendency. And that your Honor will grant such other and further relief as may to equity and good conscience belong. Your petitioner also represents unto your Honor that she and the said Leonard Gurley were at the time the said divorce was granted and had been for some two weeks before the sitting of the said August term AD 1867 of said Court living together as man and wife and that your petitioner supposed that the whole matter of difference between your petitioner and said Leonard Gurley was settled and arranged and that he had abandoned all intention of obtaining a divorce from your petitioner. Your Petitioner further represents unto your Honor that a decree of divorce was obtained from your Honorable at the said August term AD 1867 divorcing your petitioner and said Leonard Gurley. Your petitioner also represents that Leonard Gurley is the owner of large amounts of property both real and personal which has been accumulated by the joint labor of himself and your petitioner and consists also in part of the proceeds of the property owned by her at the time of her marriage with said Gurley. That the property consists in part of 1 large gray horse, 1 bay horse, 1 bay filly and one jack and Jenette (Ginney), 2 yoke of steers, 3 cows, 2 yearling about 40 head of sheep about 100 head of hogs and the following tracts of land NE1/4, NE ¼ & W1/2, SE1/4, NE1/4 and W1/2 NE1/4, NW1/4 and SE1/4, SE1/4 Sec. 18 and Se/14, NW1/4 Sec. 30 NW1/4, NE1/4 Sec. 7 and 10 acres of E side NE1/4, NW1/4 Sec. 7 all in T1S, R6E in Wayne County, Illinois. And also a steam saw and grist mill located upon land not belonging to said Gurley worth about Fifteen Hundred Dollars and your petitioner represents unto your Honor that her homestead is located upon the following tract of the above mentioned land. Your Petitioner also represents that said Leonard Gurley is attempting to sell and dispose of all his property with the intention of preventing your petitioner from obtaining any of her just rights and interest in and about the same and that he is trying to force your petitioner to leave her home and refuses to give or pay her anything and that she unless her just due can obtained from the property of the said Gurley will be left in a destitute and helpless condition. And your Petitioner as is duty bound will ever pray, etc. Susanna Gurley being first duly sworn on her oath states that the allegations of the foregoing bill as far stated from her own knowledge are true and that those stated upon information and belief are true to the best of her information and beliefs.

Writ of Injunction served on Leonard Gurley, Oct. 1867 Injunction filed in Wayne County Circuit CourtKnow all men by these presents that I, Susanna Gurley of the County of Wayne and State of Illinois party of the first part for an in consideration of the sum of $100 dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged do by these presents alien, release, convey and confirm unto Leonard C. Gurley also of the County of Wayne and State of Illinois party of the second part all the right Title interest claim and demand whatsoever of any kind including any claim for dower or homesead that I now have or at any time heretofore may have had either in law or equity in and to the Estate of, both real and personal belonging or in any manner appertaining to the said Leonard C. Gurley, and more especially releasing him of any claim for alimony out of his said estate both real and personal of said Leonard C. Gurley which could by me or by my orders be enforced in any Court of law or equity in the State of Illinois or in any place whatsoever hereby authorizing and empowering him the said Leonad C. Gurley or any attorney acting for him to dismiss any suit or suits by me or at my instance heretofore or at any time commenced against him for the recovery of alimony, homestead or dower and releasing him of any injunction at this time served upon him. It being my intention hereby for the consideration aforesaid to release all interest of every kind and nature soever which I have or at any time heretofore in the course of the progress or at the termination of this suit and that you desist and refrain from conferring and comb_____ with your creditors or any other persons with the intention of incombering or from ______ sacrificing your property or any of it or in any way depreciating its value.
Leonard & Susanna remarried in 1869 and had a daughter. Leonard died in Wayne Co. IL in 1870 from adhesions caused by a knife wound he sustained in a fight years earlier. Their last child was born 1871 after Leonard’s death. Susanna died in 1883 at age 46.
