Temperance (Perry) Parrish

Temperance Perry was born in 1789 in Franklin County, North Carolina.  Her father was Jeremiah "Redhead" Perry. He was called that because he was a redhead and to help distinguish from all the other Jeremiah Perrys living in Franklin County.  Franklin County is just north east of Raleigh, NC.  

The 1790 Franklin County, NC census lists the following Perrys:

In Memoriam January 20th

1883 Susanna (Morehead) Gurley age 46 in Wayne Co., IL.  The daughter of Alfred & Elizabeth (Durall) Morehead was born in Kentucky in 1837.  She married Leonard Gurley in 1857 in Massac County as his second wife.  They had six children and divorced in 1868.  The couple remarried in Clay Co., IL in 1869 and two more children. 

1912 Benjamin Draper in Johnson Co., IN age 93.  Born in Dearborn Co., IN in 1818, he was the son of Thomas & Catherine (Harbert) Draper.  He married Elizabeth Wheeling in Johnson Co., IN in 1841.  They had thirteen children. Benjamin Draper was a farmer.  His attention has always been given to farming.  He has three fish ponds on his farm, which are well stocked with different varieties of carp and to these Mr. Draper gives his personal attention.  He owns 200 acres of good land, of which 120 acres are in Pleasant Township and eighty in Clark Township.  About 150 acres of his land are in cultivation.  He is a Whig and cast his first presidential vote for Harrison.  Since 1856 he has been an ardent Republican.  Benjamin is buried in Glade Cemetery in Johnson Co., IN.

Sabina – from an ancient people who lived in central Italy.  According to  legend, the Romans abducted several Sabine women during a raid, and when the men came to rescue them, the women were able to make peace between the two groups.  This name was born by several early saints.

In Memoriam January 19th

1852 Christian Goodnight age ca. 95 in Kentucky.  The son of Hans Michael Goodnight, he may have been born in Germany or Pennsylvania.  The family moved to Kentucky ca. 1778. 

1868 John Colclasure age 77 in Clay Co., IL.  Born in Kentucky in 1791 he was the son of Abraham & Abigail (Dennen) Colclasure.  He married Rachel Galbraith ca. 1813.  They had fifteen children.  He is buried in Colclasure Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.

1879 Andrew Maulding age 61 in Wayne Co., IL.  Son of Ennis & Fanny (Crissel) Maulding born Union Co., KY in 1817, he married Hester Hopkins in 1834.  They had nine children.  Andrew was a minister and farmer.  He is buried in Olive Branch Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL. 

1982 Tressie Lathrop age 77 in Wayne Co., IL., born 1904 in Wayne Co., IL she was the daughter of Joel & Louisa  (Dove) Lathrop.  Tressie never married.  She is buried in Mt. Zion / Farnsworth Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1971 Herbert Edmison age 62.  He was born 1908 in Wayne Co., IL the son of Thomas & Stella (?) Edmison.  He married Violet Robertson in 1929 and had a daughter.  

Charles Speer Family

Charles Ambrose & Anna Eliza (Runyon) Speer family in Texas in the 1890s.  These are probably the youngest seven of their 11 children:  Maurice, Lida Bell, Alberta, William, Weaver, Roger and Luther.  I can only guess by their sizes which is which.  There are no names on the back of the photo.  

Charles was born July 20, 1843 in Kentucky the son of Marquis D. & Susan (Hinkle) Speer.  He married first Sarah Head in Oldham County, Kentucky in 1863.  She died in childbirth probably in 1864.  Anna was the daughter of James & Nancy (Young) Runyon born November 24, 1846 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The families lived close to the Jefferson - Oldham county line.  

Charles & Anna were married in Oldham County January 31, 1865 and had the following children:

Lou Emma born Dec. 31, 1865.  She married J.R. Gurley and had five children.  They lived in Wayne City, IL.

James born Aug. 10, 1867 married Lizzie Dudley in 1891 probably in Texas.  They had a son George b. 1893.  They were living in Yuma, AZ in 1900.  James was in Kellyville, OK listed as a widower in the 1920 census.

Ella Nora born July 16, 1869 married John Burt

Daisy Lena born May 31, 1871, died 1951 married Evans Berry.  They lived in Texas and had eleven children.  Daisy died in 1951.

Maurice Ambrose born Aug. 21, 1874, lived in Crestwood, KY and died Aug. 27, 1950.  He married Jennie Ricie (?) in 1899.  They had seven children. 

Lida Bell born Mar. 12, 1876, died Dec. 29, 1894 at age 18.  

Alberta Maye born May 2, 1878 married James McAllister.  She died in Kellyville, Oklahoma July 5, 1953.

William Guthrie born Mar. 15, 1880

Weaver Hocker born Aug. 6, 1882

Probst Sisters

Fredericka (Probst) Erkman, Anna Erkman &
Louisa (Probst) Harre

Fredericka and Louisa Probst are the only known children of Andrew & Sophia (?) Probst.  This is one of the biggest blocks we've come up against in the family history. Andrew and Sophia were born in Prussia and they were married there ca. 1844. Fredericka was born July 30, 1845 and Louisa March 7, 1851.  The family left Prussia and came to the United States between 1851 and 1859 when Andrew is found buying land in Marrs Twp., Posey County, Indiana.  There is a family story about an aunt dying on the boat coming to America.  A locket of the woman's hair was passed down to my mom.  I'm not sure if this was a Probst aunt or an Erkman aunt.

In the 1860 Posey County census Andrew's age is given as 31 and Sophia's as 40.  The girls are listed as Rosena and Lowesi.  Andrew died before 1868 as Sophia is buying land on her own.  Sophia died after 1892.  She is listed as the widow of Andrew Probst in the 1892 Evansville city directory.  Her home was at 121 E. Iowa Street.

From other records it is known that Andrew did not speak English.  The census taker was Elijah Spencer and it is not known how well he spoke German.  Fredericka's middle name may have been Rose or Rachel. She is listed as Rachel in the 1870 census and Rosa on the 1900 census.  Fredericka never learned to speak English.  She married Michael Dietz in 1861 at age 16 and he went to war serving in Company A of the 91st Indiana Infantry.  They had six children and eventually moved to White County, IL.  When Michael died of cholera in July 1873 Fredericka was four months pregnant with their son William who was born in January 1874.  She was a 28 year old widow with five children.

In August 1873 Jacob Erkman  and his wife Eva's son Jacob Jr. was born in White County.  A year later Eva died.   In 1876 Jacob Erkman and Fredericka (Propst) Dietz were married in Posey County, he was 40 and she was 30.  She may have moved back to Indiana or they may have opted to marry there because they both had family and friends there.  Jacob's parents had settled in Posey County before moving on to White Co.  It's possible that they had known each other in the 1860s.  Jacob's oldest child was 19 and his youngest 3 years old. Fredericka's oldest child was 15 and her youngest was 2 years old.  Together they had nine more children. Jacob died in 1908.  Fredericka died in 1913 aged 67.  Both are buried in Newman Cemetery in White County.

I know much less about Fredericka's sister Louisa.  She married as his second wife Henry Harre ca. 1910 when she was about 57.  He was a widower with grown children.  Louisa died in White Co. Nov. 23, 1923. Although Henry Harre lived three more years he was not the informant on her death certificate.  Fredericka's daughter Sophia was the informant and seems to have taken care of the arrangements.  Louisa is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville where Sophia may have been living at the time.

1726 William Overall age 44 son of William & Jane (Baldridge) Overall was born ca. 1682 in Virginia.  He married Mary Jones ca. 1700 and had at least one son.

1907 Margaret (Clark) Payne age 78 in Lawrence Co., OH.  Born 1828 in Lawrence Co., OH she was the daughter of Cornelius & Elizabeth (Lambert) Clark.  She married Uriah Payne in Ohio in 1851.  She is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Wilgus, OH.

1931 Stewart Fitzgerald age 88 in Clay City, IL.  He was born in Gibson Co., IN in 1842 the son of James & Elizabeth (Taylor) Fitzgerald.  He married Martha Edwards in 1863 and they had six children.  Stewart married 2) Mary Barnett in Noble IL in 1896.  They had three children and divorced ca. 1905.  He married 3) Rebecca Ward in 1908.  Stewart is buried in Clay City Cemetery in Clay City, IL.

1962 Jerry Holler age 73 in Louisville, IL the son of Willis & Martha (Spry) Holler was born in 1888.  He worked as a grave digger.  He is buried in Orchard Hill Cemetery in Louisville, IL.

Logan County, Kentucky

This is the Logan County, Kentucky courthouse in Russellville, Kentucky.  The Maulding family came to what would become Logan County in the fall of 1780 settling just north of the Kentucky - Tennessee border along the Red River.  Over time they became quite prominent citizens in the county.  Our ancestor Ambrose was named magistrate for the first court of the county which was held at his brother Richard's home in 1792. Their brother Morton Maulding was elected as the first representative from Logan County serving in the Kentucky Legislature. Morton's Gap, Kentucky is named for him.  The youngest brother West was elected sheriff in 1792 and was reelected to the post many times.  

Before a courthouse was built there was a cemetery in this block.  Several Mauldings were buried there. There is no trace of the cemetery left.

The Maulding family probably would have stayed in Logan County had they not found themselves crosswise of the Ewing family who came into political favor there.  Ambrose moved to Christian County in 1808 and was in Hamilton County, Illinois by 1815.  Morton moved to Hopkins County by 1810 and Richard returned to Tennessee.  West's family stayed through 1830.  They may have moved to Texas.

In Memoriam January 16th

1868 Alexander Wilson age 55 in Clay Co. IL.  He was born in Kentucky in 1813 and married Lorena Cornwell in Orange Co., IN in 1833.  They had seven children.

1877 Daniel Saltzman in Pulaski Co., MO age 75.  He was born in 1802 the son of Peter & Catherine (Bailey) Saltzman.

1893 Thomas Lathrop age 49 in Wayne Co., IL. Thomas born 1843 in Johnson Co., IN was the son of Levi & Louisa (Draper) Lathrop.  During the Civil War he served in Co. K of the 61^st IL infantry.  He married Anna Stilley in Hamilton Co., IL and they had three daughters.  Thomas is buried in Mt. Zion / Farnsworth cemetery in Wayne Co., IL. 

His daughter Nellie died the same day age 17 in Wayne Co., IL.  She is buried next to Thomas in Mt. Zion / Farnsworth Cemetery.

1900 Frederick Erkman age 35 in White Co., IL.  The son of Jacob & Louisa (Hoffman) Erkman, Frederick was born in White Co., IL in 1865.  He is buried in Young’s Cemetery in White Co., IL.

1940 Magdalena (Dietz) Hays Johnson age 71 in White Co., IL.  The daughter of Michael & Fredericka (Probst) Dietz, she was born in Posey Co., IN in 1868.  She married John Hays in White Co. IL in 1887 and they had ten children.  After his death she married Sherman Johnson ca. 1919.  They were later divorced.  She is buried with John Hays in Enfield Cemetery in Enfield, IL.

1951 Alma (Holler) Landreth age 56 in Louisville, IL.  She was the daughter of Willis & Martha (Spry) Holler born 1894 in Lawrence Co., IN.  She married Earl Landreth ca. 1910 and had two children.  

Ruth & Flossie

First cousins Ruth Robertson & Flossie Osborn ca. 1925.  Flossie the daughter of Louis & Idella (Robertson) Osborn was born in Wayne Co., IL in 1910.  Ruth born 1914 was the daughter of John & Rose (Moore) Robertson.  Both girls grew up in large families Ruth being the third oldest of thirteen while Flossie was second youngest of ten.  Rose grew up in their grandfather James Henry Robertson's home the hub of the Robertson family.  Flossie married Claude Robertson about 1929, probably a cousin and they had at least one daughter.  She died March 20, 1964 at age 53 and is buried in East Hickory Hill Cemetery in Jefferson Co., IL.  Ruth married her cousin Elmer Gentle in 1933.  They had a son.  Ruth worked as a sales clerk in jewelry stores in Mt. Vernon, IL.  She died in 1995 at age 81.

1742 Jabez Perkins age 64 in Norwich, CT.  He was born 1677 in Ipswich, MA the son of Sgt. Jacob & Elizabeth (Lovell) Perkins.  He married Hannah Lathrop in 1698 and they had eight children.  He married 2^nd Charity Hodges in 1722 in Middleboro, MA and had a daughter.

1818 Esther (Marsh) Clark age 72 in Scotch Plains, NJ the daughter of Charles & Esther (Cutter) Marsh she was born in 1746.  She married James Clark ca. 1767.  They had four children.  She is buried at the Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, NJ.

1882 John Young age 86.  He was born in 1795 the son of Jacob & Rachel (Goodnight) Young.  He married Judith Goldsmith in 1817.

1974 Mrs. Alma Corrie Lathrop, age 87, of 702 E. Laurel St., passed away yesterday afternoon at the family residence following a long period of ill health. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Memorial chapel of the Summers-Marshall Funeral Home with the Rev. David McNabb officiating.  Interment will be in the Amity cemetery in German Township.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.  Mrs. Lathrop was a native of Lukin township in Lawrence County and was the daughter of W.F. Corrie and Elva McGuire Corrie.  She was united in marriage to Curtis Lathrop on December 16, 1908 and he preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1972.  She leaves two daughters; Miss Wilma Lathrop of Olney and Mrs. Betty Manning of Newton; a daughter-in-law Mrs. Dorothea Lathrop of Olney and a son-in-law, Corwin Manning of Newton. There are 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ruby Judy of Lawrenceville.  Besides her husband, Mrs. Lathrop has been preceded in death by a son, Kenneth and three brothers, Elmer, Glen and Everett Corrie.

Harold Fitzgerald Family

Harold Fitzgerald sitting center with his wife Irene seated next to him, their children and grandchildren. Harold was born in Iola, IL July 5, 1924, the son of Lawrence & Vida (Land) Fitzgerald.  He married Irene Ganster Nov. 29, 1942 and they had seven children:  Barbara, Judith, Harold Jr., Denise, Mark, Kevin and Randall.  Harold was an avid genealogist and lived in Las Vegas.  A lot of his research is available at the Clay County Historical Society in Louisville, IL.  Mom started a correspondence with Harold and Irene.  They were quite generous in helping her track down more of her family and sharing research.  Harold died in Las Vegas, NV Oct. 24, 1994 and is buried in Palm Valley View Memorial Park there.

1918 Bernice Wheeler age 1 day in Wayne Co., IL.  The infant daughter of Lonnie & Anna (Erkman) Wheeler.  She is buried with her brother in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, IL.

1958 Mary (Fitzgerald) Wolfe age 86 in Clay Co., IL.  Born in 1871 she was the daughter of William & Emily (Smith) Fitzgerald.  She married Lewis Wolfe in Clay Co., IL in 1890 and they had eight children.  She is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, IL.

Keenes News, June 7th 1949

Keenes News section of the Wayne City Herald published June 7, 1949.  For a small town with not much happening, Wayne City has had many newspapers over the years. And for an even smaller town Keenes was able to take up the majority of the back page of the paper. Below you can read about Mr. & Mrs. Keith Dove and Sharon spending Sunday at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charley Harper. Keith was married to Bernice (?).  He was the son of Joe & Clara (Wood) Dove.  Joe was grandma Lou (Dove) Lathrop's half brother.

Harold Erkman

This article by Penny Shreve appeared in the Wayne County Press a couple years ago in the Memorial Day section.

Harold Erkman was 27 when he died during World War II, leaving behind a little girl.

His daughter is Trixie Lathrop of Wayne City.  She never knew either of her parents.  Her dad was reported missing in February of 1944 when she was three; her mother, the former Iva Colclasure, died three months after Trixie was born, of complications related to childbirth.

Harold was in the service twice, the first time attaining the rank of Sergeant.  But as the story is told, he was reduced to a Private after he reportedly got in a fight with a superior officer.

"He was a rebel," Trixie says.  "That was the story I was told."

Harold got out of the service, worked at Caterpillar in Peoria, and married Iva in April of 1939.  Trixie came along in 1940, and Iva died shortly thereafter.  Then when Trixie was a toddler, World War II erupted.  Harold knew he would be called back into the service, so he got things in order and reported to duty.

Harold permitted his aunt to adopt Trixie; she was adopted and raised by Anna and Lonnie Wheeler. [Okay here's the real deal:  Trixie was adopted by Harold's father, her grandfather Henry.  Henry was between wives at the time and asked his sister Anna and her husband Lonnie to take Trixie.]

Although specifics about Harold's death are unclear, it is believed that he was assigned in Northern Africa, and his group worked its way through Italy.  It is believed that Harold died in the assault on Monte Casino Abbey, south of Rome.

"He was reported missing Feb. 11, 1944, but I don't know when they reported him killed in action," said Trixie.  "Luke Leach was over there and was his best friend.  He said (of Harold's death) 12 guys went out to take a machine gun nest and only one came back."

Harold was buried in a cemetery in Italy, but later the bodies of those soldiers were exhumed and brought home for burial.  Trixie was eight years old and remembers when her dad's body was returned for burial in Thomason Cemetery.  

It's hard for Trixie to imagine what her dad went through, having lost his wife, then having to give up his only child before going back into the service.

"It would just kill me to have to give up one of my kids," she said. "But I'm grateful that he had the foresight to take care of his child before he left."

1894 Louisa Callie Osborn age 4 in Wayne Co., IL the daughter of Louis & Idella (Robertson) Osborn.  She is buried with her siblings in Salem / Mateer Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL.

1924 James Smith age 73, born 1851 the son of John & Susannah (Smart) Smith.  He married Elizabeth Boliger and they had four children.

1967 Everett Withrow age 76 in Los Angeles, CA.  He was the son of Franklin & Mary (Dove) Withrow and was born in Leonard, TX ca. 1890.  He married Ola Franks in 1911 and they had three children.  After Ola’s death he married Olive Duphel.  Everett is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, CA.

                                                                                              

1975 DeEtta Withrow age 86.  Born in 1888 in Lakeville, MO, she was the daughter of Franklin & Mary (Dove) Withrow and sister of Everett above.  She married 1) Bill Smallwood in Sequoyah, OK in 1910 and they had four children before divorcing ca. 1921.  She married 2) Bert Damon in 1923 and had a son.  After Bert’s death, DeEtta married 3) Bill Smallwood again in 1950.

Wagon Ride

Gurley giving his grandson Harold Erkman a ride ca. 1918.  James Robert Gurley was born in Wayne County, IL Jan. 23, 1866 the son of Leonard & Susanna (Morehead) Gurley.  He married Lou Emma Speer in Glenarm, IL in 1892.  They had five children the middle of which was Edna.  She married Henry Erkman January 9, 1916 and had Harold Erkman on June 23rd. J.R. & Lou owned a farm on the western edge of Wayne City, IL.  He also owned land north of town which had belonged to his parents so I'm not sure where this photo was taken.  J.R. died at home on July 4th, 1941.  Harold had enlisted in the Army Oct. 15, 1940 in East St. Louis and shipped out June 9th 1943 for north Africa.  He was killed in action February 11, 1944 in Italy while serving in Company A of the 157th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division.  They are both buried in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, Illinois.

1650 Captain John Gallop in Boston, MA age 60.  Born ca. 1590 in England he was the son of John & ? (Crabbe) Gallop.  He married Christabel ? and they had at least four children.  He was deeded Gallop’s Island ca. 1633 in Boston Harbor.  A sea captain and pilot John participated in the Pequot War and engaged in a fight off Block Island in 1636 called the first naval engagement in New England waters.
