Ahnentafel - Generation 4


Everyone in generation 4 is present and accounted for.  All were born in Illinois and made their way to  Wayne County, Illinois.  These are the 8 main lines for this genealogy blog.  There are English, Scottish, Germans and probably Irish represented here. Longevity is fairly represented here as most everyone made it to 70 and four were over 80 when they died. Averages out to 80 1/2 years for dad's side and 71 1/4 years for mom's side.

  • 1860 Abraham Lincoln elected president; Benjamin Henry invents repeating rifle
  • 1861 Fort Sumter fired upon begins the Civil War; Kansas becomes a state
  • 1861 John Charlton invented the postcard
  • 1863 West Virginia becomes a state
  • 1865 Abraham Lincoln assassinated; grand review of union troops through Washington DC; Andrew Johnson becomes president
  • 1865 Alice in Wonderland published
  • 1867 Lucien Smith received patent for barbed wire - so did lots of other people . . . 
  • 1868 cousin Ulysses Grant elected president
  • 1869 transcontinental railroad completed
  • 1870 Robert E. Lee died in Virginia
  • 1871 Chicago fire 
  • 1872 Montgomery Ward founded affectionately known as Monkey Ward
  • 1873 Economic Panic; silos and blue jeans invented 
  • 1874 founding of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union; modern typewriter manufactured
  • 1876 James "Wild Bill" Hickock killed; Battle of Little Bighorn; Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone
  • 1877 Rutherford B. Hayes president; record player invented
  • 1876 United States celebrates its centennial 
  • 1879 cash register invented 
  • 1881 creation of the American Red Cross; President James Garfield assassinated, Chester Arthur becomes president
  • 1882 Jesse James killed in Missouri
  • 1883 time zones created by railroads
  • 1885 Grover Cleveland's first term as president 
  • 1886 Statue of Liberty dedicated
  • 1889 Benjamin Harrison president
  • 1891 P.T. Barnum dies; zipper invented 
  • 1892 tractor invented 
  • 1893 Grover Cleveland's 2nd non-consecutive term as president
  • 1895 first commercial motion picture 
  • 1896 Klondike gold rush begins
  • 1898 Spanish American War
  • 1891 President William McKinley assassinated, Teddy Roosevelt becomes president
  • 1901 safety razor invented
  • 1903 airplane invented 
  • 1909 William Howard Taft president 
  • 1911 Wright brothers solo at Kitty Hawk
  • 1912 Woodrow Wilson elected president; Titanic sinks 
  • 1917 William "Buffalo Bill" Cody dies - some say the "wild west" ended in 1895 others say it lasted through 1920
  • 1917 U.S. enters World War I
  • 1918 Illinois celebrates its centennial; Spanish Flu epidemic
  • 1920 19th amendment passed, women can vote; first radio broadcast
  • 1921 Warren Harding president
  • 1923 Calvin Coolidge president
  • 1925 Tri-State tornado goes through southern Illinois counties of White and Franklin among others.  Very close to home. 
  • 1928 Herbert Hoover elected president
  • 1929 the Great Depression begins
  • 1933 cousin Franklin Roosevelt becomes president; ends prohibition; Tennessee Valley Authority created
  • 1935 nylon invented
  • 1937 Wayne-White Counties Electric Cooperative created
  • 1938 ballpoint pen invented
  • 1939 Gone with the Wind wins academy award
  • 1941 U.S. enters World War II
  • 1943 slinky invented; Casablanca wins academy award
  • 1945 World War II ends; cousin Harry Truman becomes president
  • 1950 Korean War
  • 1953 Dwight Eisenhower president
  • 1956 Interstate Highway Act 
  • 1957 Sputnik launched by Russians
  • 1959 Alaska & Hawaii become states
  • 1961 John F. Kennedy president; Vietnam War officially begins
  • 1963 Kennedy assassinated; Lyndon Johnson president
  • 1969 Neil Armstrong walks on the moon; Richard Nixon president
